INTRODUCTION

This is the eighth Number in the publication of Finnell
Materials, based mainly on the materials from the Harry
L. Keller papers.

I have also discovered this past winter that a Finnell
Family files compiled by William [Bill] and Patricia
[Pat] Malone of Sun City, AZ, are now in the Sun City
[AZ] Genealogical Society. The Library located in Sun
City West states they have a couple large files of notes
and correspondence on the James FINNELL Family. I hope on
a future visit to go through these files and see if there
is any materials that would be useful for future
publication in Loose Branches and Roots.

In this issue are several entries regarding the Reuben
Finnell from Orange County, VA Revolutionary War Records.
Interesting materials from his widows Pension application
for Rev War service may be of interest to all. The
Revolutionary War Widows Pension file contains some
interesting bits on the use of the Family name you will
want to read. I have also been interested in what
motivated many of our Ancestors to leave Virginia and
migrate to Kentucky and Tennessee from 1780 to 1800. A
book just discovered provides some insight on this
migration from Virginia to Kentucky from 1780 to 1793. If
you are interested I would suggest the book: To
Western Woods The Breckinridge Family Moves to Kentucky
in 1793; by Hazel Dicken-Garica; Cranbury, NJ; 1991.

I have also started to scan and put on disk some of the
older and better Finnell Family Pictures. Several of my
Family pictures have been added to my web page. Others
are being sought and if you have older pictures of Family
members please share them with the Family Archives. We
may also use some of the more interesting ones in future
issues.

I hope you find some thing of interest in this issue and
that will help to preserve the Family History. Your
continued support and contributions of Finnell data and
materials is always welcomed. I am always interested in
having copies of old family obituaries, old letters and
other newspaper articles for publication and the
archives.

Wishing you and yours the best for a enjoyable and busy
summer.

Arthur Louis Finnell

Letter from Reuben A. Finnell to William Russell Roy

Bentonville, Warren Co, VA
3 Oct 1892

William R. Roy, Esq

Dear Nephew,
Yours of the 20th to hand. Very glad to hear from
you. Glad to look upon the sweet face of a child of a
much loved and dear sister I have your mother's likeness
(a daguerreotype) taken when she was young like your
sister Annie Stinson. I wrote to your brother Reuben that
he might have it to get a copy. You might have it copied
in St Louis. If you send me a good copy enlarged you may
have the original. I heard from Reuben a short time
since, he said his wife was very sick and that he would
write me again soon. I was proud to hear of his
prospective promotion.
I send you a copy of the Roy family records as I
find it in the Stinson family Bible. I have also the
Stinson family record and the Finnell family record. You
wrote me from St Joe, I answered your letter, but heard
from you no more. I would like to hear all the
particulars, how the children of my sister are getting
on. Your uncle Russell would like to hear from you. I
connot send you our likeness now, I am hard up. I am in
debt and must save all I can. I am trying to get out of
debt. Its is the worst thing in the world except
war, pestilence, and famine, I think however I can manage
my debt by selling off some building lots at Bentonville,
my land joins the village. Your Aunt Annie died 4 Oct
1887. I was married again the 20th Nov 1890 to Miss
Phoebe Holden of Fairfax County. Both of my marriages
have been very happy ones. I have an inviting home now
where my children and friends are always welcome. You and
your wife must come. You have removed I suppose to a
larger field of usefulness. Hope you are still doing
well. You wrote me before how you stood politically, I
should like to know how you stand religiously. Have you
that peace of mind and contentment, which this world
cannot give you, neither can it take that peace from you.
A happiness that will be more lasting than time. Remember
me Affectionately to all your people, write me again soon
and tell me about them.
Your uncle, R. A. Finnell

The Following are articles found in the Revolutionary War
Pension file for Elizabeth Bourn Finnell widow of Reuben
Finnell / Finney in the National Archives.

This is to certify that during the years 1804, 5 &
6 I was well acquainted with Reuben Finney in Jassamine
County Kentucky kept a school within 20 to 60 yards of
the house in which he lived - in the intermissions of
school took great pleasure in going to his house and
talking with him, he was there confined to his bed with
Rheumatic pains and partially blind in the many
conversations I held with him he told me that early in
the revolutionary war he enlisted in the regular service
for three years and served that term out and returned
home which was in Orange county, Virginia - and soon
after enlisted for and during the war - and went into the
service again and continued until its close - he also
told me of many battles he had been in , "the taking of
Stony Point" I distinally remember to [______] of them
and have frequently been struck with the agreement of his
narrative of the attacks and the written history - he
informed me of many other battles in which he was engaged
and I think Monmouth and Barndywine among the number, I
was acquainted with him from these years until the time
of his death, he continued all the time in the same
helpless and blind condition, I think he died about the
year 1813 or 14. I have been acquainted with the early
acquaintance of Reuben Finney all my life and have never
heard any one of them conterdicted or doubt the
aforesaid service of Reuben Finney, given under my hand
this 14th day of Nov 1838.

Also found in the Revolutionary War Pension file was
the following letter that is of great interest.
Letter Dated 15 Dec 1838 from the Clerks Office Orange
County Court:
     "Sir
Your letter of the 11th was only received by
todays mail I have never been able to find in
this office any Register or other Records of
Marriage for as early a date as 1784. The only
evidence of marriage is the bonds given upon
obtaining License which seems to have been
preserved with care. I find the Bond given by
Reuben FINNELL for obtaining a license
to intermarry with Elizabeth Bourn. You will
observe the name spelt FINNELL I have
no doubt however that these are the parties
refered to. I have known many of the name, all
of whom were called FINNEY although
          they spelt the name FINNELL."

The above Reuben Finnell [Finney] went to Jessamine Co,
KY and died there 1813/14

Included was a statement of Elijah and Judith Bourn to
testify that they were at the marriage of Reuben Finnell
and Elizabeth Bourn in Orange Co, VA in the fall of 1784
at the house of Henry Bourn.

A 1843 Widows pension application
at Shelby Co, MO dated 24 Oct 1843 Elizabeth presented
the original certificate in which she received 5 years of
$100.00 per annum pension as widow of Reuben Finney, who
was a dragoon in the Rev and who died in 1814. The
pension began in 1836 She has prevously lived in
Jessamine Co, KY. He enlisted in Baylor's Dragoons 1 Sep
1781 and served the full term of his enlistment.
Elizabeth had 8 children the oldest was Jane. The oldest
son taken prisoner at the "River Raisin" and was in the
battle at New Orleans. Elizabeth had a brother named
William.
