William Bohannon & Descendants
 PAGE 5
There are four cemeteries in Henry County [Data of Bill Smith, Henry County Kentucky
Cemeteries, C. Price Meeks, Henry County Historical Society, 1977.]*:
#13 - Smithfield Cemetery
#29 - Eminence Cemetery, Highway 55 at Mulberry Road
#81 - Pleasureville Cemetery, on Henry County and Shelby County line
#47 - Union Baptist Church Cemetery, 6 Mile Road 1 mile north of U.S. 421
Sarah Bohannon (Bohon) married Wesley Hudson on 22 February 1827 in Shelby
County,
Kentucky.1 The marriage bond was signed by Wesley Hudson, Abraham Bohannon and
William Bohannon.2
The 1850 census for Oldham County, Kentucky, enumerated Abraham and Prudence
Jones Bohannon with two daughters and two Hudson grandchildren residing with them:3
[E-mail data from Bill Smith, 26 Jan 1998.]*
A Bohannon 71 M Farmer born VA [Abraham Bohannon]
Emily 32 F KY [Milly Bohannon]
Elizabeth 28 F KY [Elizabeth Bohannon]
E Hudson 18 F KY [Elizabeth Hudson]
W A 16 M KY [W A Hudson]
Geo Zaring 12 M KY [?]
Prudence 69 F VA [Prudence Jones Bohannon]
Abraham Bohannon was shown with a real estate value of $350. Elizabeth Bohannon was
identified as insane.
Elizabeth Hudson was a daughter of John Hudson and Mary Bohannon, who was born on
28 May 1832 in Henry County, Kentucky, and later married Robert Sullivan Waters.
Although there are no ditto marks reflecting the surname of W. A., who follows E.
Hudson in the enumeration, this undoubtedly was her brother W. A. Hudson. Aged 16 in
1850, W. A. Hudson appears on the 1860 census in LaGrange, Oldham County,
Kentucky, as aged 26: [E-mail data from Bill Smith, 26 Jan 1998.]*
Oldham County 27 July 1860:
p. 891 709/706 W A Hudson 26 M Farmer 800/730 born IN
Mary “ 23 F KY
p. 892 Jeffery Hudson 5 M KY
Laura 3 F KY
John 1 M KY
Mattie 2/12 F KY
This record contradicts the 1850 census which shows W. A. Hudson as a native of
Kentucky. It is likely that the 1860 census is more reliable, in that W. A. Hudson was the
head of household and entered first. In 1850, the enumerator may have inadvertently
repeated the birthplace from the line above. If this is true, John and Mary Bohannon
Hudson lived in Indiana about 1834.
A member of the Clore family was enumerated two families away:
p. 892 711/708 Kellar Clore 47 M Farmer 8480/3410 born KY
Ann 44 F VA
John 16 M KY
Thomas 12 M KY
Eliza B 16 F VA
The relationship of George Zaring, born c1838, to the Bohannon family, has not been
determined, but he may have been a young farm laborer.

Wesley Clore and Milly Bohannon, who was born on 09 March 1826 in Shelby County,
Kentucky, were married on 01 March 1853 in Oldham County, Kentucky, daughter of
Abraham Bohannon. [They Came to Kentucky, Alberta Kirkwood, Gateway Press, 1976,
pages 550-551, e-mail data of Bill Smith.]* Since Abraham and Prudence Jones
Bohannon are not known to have had a daughter named Milly or Mildred, this marriage
must pertain to Emily Bohannon, who was shown, apparently incorrectly, as age 32 [born
c1818] on the 1850 census with her father Abraham.
Milly Bohannon was the second wife of Wesley Clore, who was born on 10 February
1801 in Oldham County, Kentucky, and died on 21 April 1879. He was a son of Solomon
Clore and Susanna Yager. Wesley married (1) Jemima Beasley, by whom he had
children; [1] Solomon Clore, who was born on 12 April 1825 and married Elizabeth Jane
Loudersmith on 27 November 1860; and [2] Robert Clore, who was born on 13 May
1827, married Catherine Matilda Hall on 06 June 1853, and died on 07 January 1871.
The name Clore is sometimes spelled Glore. [They Came to Kentucky, Alberta Kirkwood,
Gateway Press, 1976, pages 550-551, e-mail data of Bill Smith.]*
Thomas Bohannon and Nancy Hackett were married by Abraham Cook, a Baptist
preacher and brother of Helen, Rhoda, Hosea and Jesse Cook, in Shelby County on 15
February 1821. Jesse Hackett was bondsman.4 Nancy Hackett probably was a daughter of
James Hackett and Margaret Cook Mastin who were married on 18 January 1797 in
Franklin County, Kentucky.5 Margaret Cook Mastin Hackett was a sister of Helen,
Rhoda, Hosea, Jesse and Abraham Cook, and the widow of Lewis Mastin, who was killed
by the Indians in the same attack as Jesse and Hosea Cook in 1792.
Thomas Bohannon was bondsman for Thomas Neill and Elizabeth Hackett, daughter of
James Hackett, who were married on 09 September 1824.6
Thomas Bohannon was enumerated in Shelby County, Kentucky, on the 1830 census:7
Thomas Bohannon 1 M 30-40 1 F 20-30 (Nancy)
1 M 5-10 (Joshua) 1 F 5-10 (?)
2 M - 5 (Lewis) 1 F - 5 (?)
(?)
Thomas Bohannon apparently died before 17 September 1850, when the 1850 census for
Franklin County, Kentucky, lists Nancy Bohannon as head of family:8
Nancy Bohannon 50 F born KY Real estate value $125
Joshua Bohannon 25 M Farmer born KY
Louis Bohannon 20 M Farmer born KY
Prudence Bohannon 17 F born KY
Thomas Bohannon 14 M born KY
Ninian M Bohannon 10 M born KY
Joshua Bohannon, who was born on 17 October 1825 and died on 30 October 1907, is
buried in Defoe Cemetery in Shelby County, about fifteen miles north of Shelbyville near
the Henry County line. The cemetery is on Route 1922, which roughly parallels the
county line, 0.9 miles west of Elmburg-Bunk Ellis Road. His wife Catherine, who was
born on 22 September 1840 and died on 01 May 1905, is also interred there, as are other
later Bohannons who have not been connected with the family.9

In 1995, when Mary Bohannon Hubbartt supplied the family records for her descent from
Weston Bohannon, she was a nurse and mother in Hartwell, Georgia.
An early resident of Henry County, Kentucky, who has not been connected with William
Bohannon of White County, Tennessee, was William Bohannon who died before 05
April 1806, leaving heirs, William Bohannon, Victor Bohannon and Martha Bohannon.
On that date the heirs were conveyed In-Lots Numbers 359 and 360 in Port William,
Gallatin County, Kentucky, by Brook Bennett, Zedekiah South, John V. Conover,
Stephen Bailey and Benjamin Waller, Trustees of Port William, for $1.00.11 Victor
Bohannon was old enough on 17 October 1799 to participate in a Gallatin County deed,
whereby he and the heirs of Sampson Armstrong of Gallatin County acquired 200 acres
on the bank of the Ohio River, from David and Elizabeth Langhead of Fayette County,
Kentucky, for 60 pounds.
William Bohannon, Jr. of White County, Tennessee, died there in 1844.12

Lewis Bohannon is buried in Johnson's Cemetery, 4th District, Putnam County,
Tennessee, with his second wife, Nancy, who died on 26 May 1850. James Jordan
Bohannon is also buried there. Elijah Bohannon is buried in Moore Cemetery in
Union Township, Wright County, Missouri.17
Jane England Bohannon married (2) (H. E.?) Williams and is buried beside Lewis
Bohannon in Johnson's Cemetery as Jane Williams. She was born on 10 November 1826
and died on 10 May 1881.
James J. Bohannon administered the estate of Lewis Bohannon and a report dated 06
June 1853, mentions heirs:18
Lucy Bohannon, deaf and dumb
Rosa Bohannon, minor without guardian
James and Abram Hargis, children of William and Catherine Hargis, minors,
in Jackson County, Tennessee
Thomas and Dicey Horn, minors, in Alabama
Pat Williams Henry, minor, in Illinois

Lewis Bohannon
William McBride and wife Rebecca in Laclede County, Missouri
Peter Hargis and wife Frankey
Riley Barnes and wife Mary Ann in Arkansas
James Hargis and wife Judy
John Stamps and wife Sally in Iowa
John Fox and wife Betsy in Illinois
Jesse Bohannon, who was first listed on the White County tax list in 1848, in the same
district as Lewis and James J. Bohannon, was born about 1827 and may have been a son
of Lewis Bohannon. James J. Bohannon, who was born in March 1826, first appeared on
the White County tax list in 1847, when he was 21. William C. Bohannon, aged 22 and
born about 1828, who was enumerated with James Jordan Bohannon on the 1850 census,
could have been a son of Lewis Bohannon. William C. Bohannon married Elizabeth
McCormick on 04 February 1851 in White County, Tennessee.19 It is unlikely that Lewis
Bohannon would name two sons William.
William Bohannon, who was born in 1806 and married Margaret Odle (O'Dell), moved to
Illinois, where their sons Elijah and William, Jr. were born in Macoupin County about
1834 and 1836, and then to Missouri, before 1839, where son James D. Bohannon was
born. They appeared on the 1850 census in Laclede County with children: Lewis, 21;
Enoch, 19; (both born in Tennessee); Elijah, 16; William, 14; (both born in Illinois);
James D., 11; Nelson M., 6; and Margaret R. Bohannon, 3; (all born in Missouri).
Margaret O'Dell (Odle) was a daughter of Enoch O'Dell and Sarah Ramsey.20
A daughter Catherine Hough is identified in the will of William Bohannon. In his second
will, dated 25 August 1883 and proved on 14 February 1888, William Bohannon made
bequests to his wife (unnamed); daughter Catherine Hough; the children of Lewis
Bohannon, deceased; the children of Elijah Bohannon, deceased; and the child of Nelson
Monroe Bohannon. Enoch, William and James D. were excluded from the will because
they had received land previously. Son James D. Bohannon was named as executor.
William Bohannon and Enoch Bohannon contested the second will and the original will
was modified by the court. It contained bequests to daughter Catherine Hough; Enoch
Bohannon; William Bohannon, Jr.; children of Lewis Bohannon, deceased, excepting
Lafayette, Enoch Carroll, and the children of Sarah Barnes; children of Elijah Bohannon,
deceased, excepting Amanda, Abraham and Elijah; and child of Nelson Monroe
Bohannon. William Bohannon, Sr. died on 01 March 1887 and is buried in an unmarked
grave in the Bohannon Family Cemetery on the old Schneider farm, owned by Richard
Shamel in 1975. Margaret O'Dell Bohannon was born in 1806 in Tennessee and died on
10 April 1874.
William Bohannon, Sr. married (2) Mrs. Mary Ann “Molly” Ballinger on 27 May 1974 in
Laclede County.21
William Bohannon and Margaret O'Dell are known to have had eight children:22
Catherine Bohannon who was born on 16 December 1827 in White County,
Tennessee, married Ashford Hough on 07 November 1848 in Laclede County,
Missouri, died on 08 September 1892 in Laclede County and is buried in the
Bohannon Family Cemetery;
Lewis Bohannon who was born on 19 April 1829 in White County, married (1)
Melvina Wright on 12 January 1851 in Laclede County, (2) Mrs. Sarah Catherine
Sharp Coffman on 18 September 1856 in Laclede County, died on 04 May 1880
and is buried in the Lewis Bohannon Cemetery in Laclede County;
Enoch Bohannon who was born in 1831 in White County, married (1) Julia Ann
Shirley on 19 October 1851 in Laclede County, (2) Mrs. Luzan Farrar on 20
November 1905 in Laclede County, died on 29 August 1912 and is buried in
Lebanon Cemetery in Laclede County;
Elijah Bohannon who born in 1834 in Macoupin County, Illinois, married
Amanda Elizabeth Weaver on 25 December 1852 in Laclede County, died or killed
in Civil War and probably is buried in Bohannon Cemetery in Laclede County;
William Bohannon, Jr. who was born on 15 September 1836 in Macoupin
County, married (1) Sarah Robinson on 15 September 1836 in Laclede County, (2)
Frances J. Hillhouse on 23 November 1862 in Laclede County, died on 05
November 1909 and is buried in Coldwater Cemetery in Wright County, Missouri;
James D. Bohannon who was born about 1839 in what became Laclede County,
Missouri, married (1) ----- ------, (2) Saletia Sharp Roberts on 17 May 1865 in
Laclede County, and died about 1915, probably in Laclede County;
Nelson Monroe Bohannon who was born about 1844 in what became Laclede
County, wife not identified, and death date unknown;
Margaret R. Bohannon who was born about 1847 in Laclede County, never
married and died on 09 November 1873 in Laclede County.
It has been said that William Bohannon and Margaret O'Dell also had sons named Wilson
and Marion Bohannon,23 but they are not mentioned in William's will so this may be a
misunderstanding.
