Small but known burial places in the Hulbert area :



      There are many cemeteries in Cherokee county, well maintained and known by all. Yet, some burial places have been lost, but to only a few. It is hoped that this listing of small cemeteries and locations will help in the realization if you the reader know of additional burial places or information about these burials. Add to these pages those places you have came across in woodland or field and help find the lost.

      Adam Hendricks Cemetery: Sec. 17, R21E, T17N (twenty three graves, eight identified) One mile east and 1/4 mile south Shady Grove School. Earliest marker still standing is George W. Doublehead 1852/1888 on the stone reads "Remember Me".

      Houston Graves: Sec. 9, R21E, T17N, One mile east of Shady Grove School. In open pasture, in a growth of buck-brush and vines. Some say there are additional graves here, but no evidence now. Two graves: Annie Houston and infant.

      Chuey Family Cemetery: Sec. 13, R23E, T19N. In open pasture no fence nor maintenance. Some monuments in Cherokee language, but badly eroded. Eighteen noticeable graves five identified. Robert William and Annie Weylukie. Sarah Chuey, John Beaner and two children's graves.

      Hawkins Grave: Sec. 6, R21E, T18N In open pasture land Monument on ground broken. Lewis Hawkins died 1894 age abt. 70.

      Spade Cemetery: Sec.24, R23E, T17N Fenced and Maintained, at least 25 graves, 9 identified. Watson Spade (b) 1869 (d) 1910.

      Constable Cemetery: Sec. 18 R21E, T19N. A utility installation runs through the burial place Monument bases exist but no stones found, except one. at least ten graves at this location. William L. Constable (b) 1857 (d) 1928.

      Blair family Cemetery: Sec 8, R23E, T14E. In wooded flatland, no fence. 10 graves visible, 6 identified. Burials between 1903 to 1924.

      Gritts Grave: Sec. 24, R22E, T17N, several graves used to be evident, but only one Identifiable now: C.G. Gritts (b) 1856 (d) 1895. In an open pasture.

      Vann Grave: Sec. 8 R20E, T18N, unmarked grave in the woods, but very unusual tree marks the grave of Yatonah Vann (b) abt 1838 (d) 1919.

      Old Blue Springs Cemetery: Sec. 26, R21E, T18N, over twenty seven graves at one time, now only two markers remain. Sequoyah Houston (b) 1854 (d) 1894, and Tla-sto-ma Houston (father of Sequoyah Houston). Several members of the Squirrel family including Charley Squirrel, and several members of the Sunday family are resting in this first burial place at present Gideon.

      Levi Christie Cemetery: Sec. 24 R23E, T15N, Thirty six graves recognizable, eleven identified.

      Catron Cemetery: Sec. 26, R23E, T16N, grown up in weeds and vines. at least ten graves, four identified all members of Catron family.

      Maud Hair Cemetery: Sec. 32 R20E, T18N, open pasture at edge of woods. at least eight graves, six identified all from Hair family. Agent Cemetery: Sec.9 R22E, T18N, maintained, over thirty known graves, 18 identified.

      Nancy Gourd cemetery: Sec. 11, R21E, T16N, fenced. at least 28 known graves, 10 identified.

      Alec Cemetery: Sec. 24, R20E, T18N, total number of graves here unknown. Burial place used before 1880. three graves identified, 8 visible.

      Charles Cochran Cemetery: Sequoyah State Park, in wooded area. There are several known burial places within the park, that are not maintained. at this location there are at least ten visible graves, four are identified.

      Gunter Grave: Sec. 19, R22E, T17N, "Sacred to the Memory of Rev. Edward Gunter", (b) 1789 (d) 1842.

      Dirteater Cemetery: Sec.11, R22E, T17N. some graves maintained, (may be known by another name). At least 107 graves, 13 identified.

      Parris Grave: Sec.26, R21E, T17N. Abandoned. Robert Parris (b) 1794, (d) 1858.

      Corderay Cemetery: Sec.13, R21E, T16N. at least 23 graves, 5 identified. W.S. Corde- ray (d) 1887. George W. Wilson (b) 1861 (d) 1891.

      Cunningham Cemetery: Sec.21, R22E, T16N. about 7 graves, 3 identified. Anna Shorey Price (d) 1876 age 64. Sarah R. Cunningham (b) 1848 (d) 1873. Maria Jane Williams (b) 1831 (d) 1851.

      New Hope Cemetery: Sec. 13, R20E, T17N. This is a fenced and maintained cemetery. It is also a large cemetery unlike the burial places previously listed. This cemetery is located one mile east and one mile north of Hulbert. Formerly known as the Cagey Cemetery and was first used as an Indian Cemetery about 1860. Many of the graves are not marked and inscription on some of the markers are in Cherokee. Tom Double- head, a full blood Cherokee, died March 15, 1894, inscription on monument in Cherokee. Thompson, a Cherokee confederate soldier was buried here about 1887, and a hewed log house about five by nine feet was built over his grave. All of the logs are gone except the four foundation legs, (this information was given in 1937 by Madison Cagey of Hulbert).

      Hulbert Cemetery: International Order of Odd Fellows ( I.O.O.F.) also referred to as the "One-hundred F" cemetery located two miles west of Hulbert on old highway. Sec. 21 R20E T17N.

      Zach Taylor, (b) 1858 (d) 1898, the founder of the town of Melvin. Theodore Bruster (b) 1823 (d) 1872. Ely Spears family area dates back to the 1860's. Bill Cook, the outlaw is buried in this cemetery. His grave is marked with muscle shells. Jim Cook, brother of Bill is also buried here.

      Johnson Cemetery: NE NW Sec.24 R20E, T17N. Located 3/4 mile north and 3/4 mile east of Hulbert. This cemetery is on a knoll adjoining the highway on the south side. It has a wire fence enclosure about 100 square feet. There are about 35 graves with sand stone markers but no inscriptions on any of them. All buried in this cemetery are Cherokee, except one white baby, according to Madison Cagey in 1937. In 1970, Mrs. Columbus Long assisted in identifying 44 of the approx. 100 graves at this location listed Tyner Vol. 2.


      During seven years the Tyners recorded over 90,000 early burials in seventeen counties of Northeastern Oklahoma. Covering 1043 cemeteries. Listed below are the cemeteries of Cherokee county only, and the volumes they are listed.
