Bleeding Hearts

(Latin: Dicentra)

Heart-shaped flowers which hang from arching stems. Flowers are red-pink but will lose their colour if they get too much sun. The leaves are fern-like, greyish green. Bleeding Hearts do very well in containers and hanging flowerpots.

Height: 12-30" (30-75cm)
Blooms: Late spring to early summer
Varieties: Dutchmans Breeches (white petals with red-pink heart centers); Alba (white petals with white centers) -- These are hard to come by
Propagation: Divide Roots in very early spring, or will spread by self-sowing if flowers go to seed.
Light: Patrial Shade to Full Shade
