Hoyt
Ancestry

This page is dedicated to people who are researching the Hoyt and Haight family of North America and their ancestors in England. There are hundreds of thousands of Hoyt descendants spread throughout the U.S. This page and its creator will hopefully help to link all of these descendants together. I am open to any suggestions for ways to improve this page and for any corrections that you may wish to see on this page. While your here be sure to check out my Ancestor Tree, and my Family Tree Dead Ends.

I am a descendant of Simon Hoyt who arrived in New England in 1629. There are two different theories as to his Ancestry in England. I will present both theories here, and invite everyone to continue the drive to come up with one ancestry.

The first theory is that Simon was born about 1593 in West Hatch, County Somerset, England. He was the son of Micheal Hoyte and Agnes ?. He married before 1618 to ??? and had Christopher, Walter, Nicholas, Alexander, John, and Agnes. She died soon after 1625, and he remarried about 1632 to Susanna ?. By Susanna he had Mary, Moses, Joshua, Miriam, Samuel, Benjamin and Sarah. Simon died on September 1, 1657 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

This theory is a recent one that is based on actual research done in Somerset County, England, by Robin Bush, an English Researcher. Research was also conducted in Upway, Dorsetshire, England in order to prove that the older theory about Upway was false. This first theory that is presented is very convincing. If you would like more information on it, please write to the:

Please do not write the author of this page asking for more information on this theory, as I do not have any more info. Also, the Hoyt Family Association, whom I have corresponded with presents a viewpoint that I sort of agree with. They feel that it is not fair to give away the new info without collecting a small fee, which will help pay for additional research in England. I am currently in the process of subscribing to their newsletter, and feel that the nominal $15 dollar fee is worth it for the material that I will recieve. Please do not catch the wrong drift, as I believe that genealogical information should be freely shared, but in this case, I feel that the justification for a fee is warrented. That brings us to the second and older theory.

This theory is mainly based on the one presented in David Hoyt's book that was printed in 1871. It states that Simon was born in Upway, Dorset, Dorsetshire, England on January 20, 1589. It states that his wives names were Deborah Stowers and Susannah Smith. Also, Simon's father is one John Hoyt, also from Upway. The immigration and death dates are the same as above. Also, many of the children are the same.

If you need a lookup from David W. Hoyt's "The Genealogy of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight Families", published in 1871. Please feel free to e-mail Kelvin Kean with your request. He will look it up for no cost. The book lists very few births later than about 1855, since it was published in 1871. Although the book is more thorough and accurate than most, the Hoyt book does not list every Hoyt born from the 17th century on. In his preface David Hoyt notes that "...this volume is very nearly complete for the first four generations; but that the actual number of people belonging to the sixth and later generations is much greater..." than the book includes. Just reading the pages, there are many Hoyts, both female and male, for whom he had learned nothing but their birth dates. Sometimes he cryptically add "...went west and nothing further was heard from him" or "...reportedly lived in New York City." Most are entered without further reference. Hoyt notes that he estimates that including every living Hoyt (assuming he could have found them all) of the time and all their ancestors would have required a several volumes equal to this book. And it's over 600 pages of fine print!

The Book is now available online at Randall Haight's site. It includes the available indexes, as well as text of every page in the book. It is very easy to use, and is a must see if you are looking for information on your Hoyt/Haight ancestor.
