My Favorite Sermon

Below is a link to my favorite sermon, which I transcribed from tape. The sermon is "Calling Those Things That Be Not As Though They Were" by Charles Capps on April 19, 1995 at my former church, Christian Growth Center in Christiansburg, Virginia. This is a sermon on faith confessions and the power of the words. This is the best balanced sermon I have heard on the subject. So many people don't understand this subject and try to make a controversy out of it. Because of their misunderstanding, they make fun of the confession teaching and call it the "name it and claim it" or "blab it and grab it" teaching. What people don't understand is there is more to confession than simply "naming it and claiming it." Capps says that things won't happen just because you say them, but saying those things is involved in causing those things to happen. What you confess(or continually say) must line up with the word of God.

Charles Capps takes us on a scriptural journey from Genesis to Revelations to show us that this Romans 4:17 principle of confession, of "Calling Those Things That Be Not As Though They Were" is a scriptural principle that is throughout the Bible. He uses scriptural examples, such as God speaking the world into existence and changing Abram's name to Abraham, which means "Father of Many Nations", so that Abraham's faith would grow everytime he heard his name (see Romans 10:17). Capps also uses everyday examples, such as pushing buttons on an elevator, calling the dogs and cats, and using a thermostat, to illustrate this principle.

I guarantee that if you listen to this sermon and dilligently study the scriptures without bias, you will find this principle to be very bibical and one of the most valuable teachings you can learn. I know from my experience as a Christian, I have overcome more victories in my life from living this principle.
