TREE PLANTING AND CARE
Continued from the previous page

Watering

During the first year, give trees a thorough soaking every 7-10 days, unless adequate rainfall occurs. Start watering early in the spring and continue through the summer and fall until the leaves drop. Make sure not to over-water. The soil needs to dry out between waterings. A slow soaking over several hours is best, and may be done by an oscillating sprinkler or soaker hose. During the first two years of establishment, make sure to soak the entire mulched area 8-18" deep each time you water.
Throughout the following 2-3 years, continue watering on a 7-10 day schedule. At this time period, the roots are beginning to grow beyond the mulch area; therefore, it is necessary to soak the entire mulch area and the area extending out past the drip line. A "Root Feeder" connected to a hose and inserted into the ground at a depth of 6-12" all around the drip line at 3 foot intervals can also be used (see figure at right).
