Balled and burlapped and container grown trees should be planted in a hole about 2 feet larger in diameter than the rootball. If the soil characteristics are poor, you may need to prepare the planting site ahead of time. Soils low in fertility should have orgainic matter such as peat moss mixed throughtout. One method to consider when planting in clay or compacted soils to to plant the trees' root ball at 1/2 depth and filling in with wood chips. The diagram below illustrates this planting method.
