Thompson, Lilly, And Pate Families

Thompson Family

Josiah S. Thompson was born in 1834, and was a son of Thomas and Telitha Thompson. Thomas and Telitha Thompson were in Orange County, North Carolina in 1850. Thomas and Telitha Thompson were in Wayne County, North Carolina in 1860. Josiah Thompson was listed as head of family in Wayne County also in 1860. He was age 26. His wife's name was Catherine. His occupation was Waggoner. Three children are listed in his household. Their names were David, age 3; Thomas H., age 2; and Mary J., age 10/12.
Josiah Thompson married Catherine Lilly 25 October, 1857. Catherine Lilly was the daughter of Susan Lilly. Susan is listed in the 1840 Wayne County Census with only one daughter. Susan is listed again in the 1850 Wayne Census with three children. Their names were Catherine, W. David, and Gibson. Susan Lilly was not listed in any census after 1850 in Wayne County. Nor is her name found in any other records in the county. Gibson Lilly died 13 June, 1862. I can find no other mention of W. David Lilly. Catherine Lilly was born 15 August, 1837. We do not know who her father was.
Josiah and Catherine Thompson reared the following children: David I., Thomas H., Mary J., Martha A., Josiah, Jr., and Gibson.
Josiah Thompson fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. He enlisted 10 May, 1862, at the age of 27, as a Private in Company G of the 55th North Carolina Regiment. He was taken prisoner 1 July, 1863, the first day of fighting at Gettysburg, and was transported to Fort Delaware where he died 25 January, 1864.
In the 1870 Wayne County Census Catherine Thompson is listed as Head of Household. All of her children are in the household. But by 1880 the family had been split up. Catherine was listed as Head of Household, but none of her children were at home. Josiah, Jr., and Thomas were living in the household of Reverend J.T. Albritton. They were listed as Servants. David Thompson was enumerated with Julius Beard. Catherine Lilly Thompson died 3 April, 1885.
The oldest son of Josiah and Catherine Thompson, David I. Thompson, was born 8 April, 1857. He married Virginia Hughes. She died after only a few years of marriage. David then married Ida Jackson Pate, daughter of John L. and Barbara Kornegay Pate. David and Ida Thompson reared the following children: Carlos H., born 10 November, 1898; David O., born 7 May, 1901; and Arthur A., born 23 September, 1903. David I. Thompson died 10 November, 1908. Ida Pate Thompson died 29 March, 1915. With both parents dead, these three brothers were forced to live apart as their father, and aunts and uncles had done. Both Carlos and Arthur died young. Carlos died 3 August, 1928. Arthur died 22 January, 1950. Only David Oliver Thompson lived long enough to marry. He married Donnie S. Best, daughter of George W. and Mary Frances Williams Best. They were married 22 February, 1925, and reared only one child. The child was a daughter named Nellie Rae Thompson. Nellie was born 9 December, 1925. 19 December, 1944 she married James G. Francis of Haywood County, NC. James and Nellie Thompson Francis reared four children.
Josiah Thompson, Jr., brother of David I. Thompson, married Mary E. Bass. The couple moved to Drew County, Arkansas.
I. Josiah S. Thompson, married Catherine Lilly.
