Josiah S. Thompson, Jr. was born 22 September, 1862, the fifth child of Josiah S. and Catharine Lilly Thompson of Wayne County, North Carolina. His father died 25 January, 1864. Young Josiah continued to live at home with his mother until shortly before 1880. By 1880, however, he and his brother, Thomas Thompson, were living in the household of Reverend J.T. Albritton. His brother, David Thompson, was living in the household of Julius Beard. By 1900 Josiah S. Thompson, Jr. had married Mary E. Bass, and the couple had moved to Drew County,Arkansas.
