Francis And Related Family

John Francis, Jr.

There was a John Francis listed on the 1815 tax list in addition to our ancestor John Francis. This was the first time this name appeared on the tax list. He was not listed as having any land. As a general rule a person was not listed on the tax list until he was 21. If this is true then the John Francis listed on the 1815tax list would have been born in 1794.
A John Francis married Betsy Burris in 1813. If it was the same John Francis as the one listed on the 1815 tax list then he would have been 19 in 1813. John Francis, Jr. is listed in an estate settlement in 1822. He does not appear again in any Washington County, Tennessee records after this date.
Our ancestor John Francis prepared a deed for his children 28 August, 1822. In the deed he names three of his sons: Daniel, Ephraim, and John. He also men- tioned "younger children" which he did not name. John Francis, Jr. was not given any land in 1822. And he is not mentioned in any records in said county after 1822.
It is very possible that all of these references are to the same John Francis, and that he was born in 1794, that he had either died, or left Washington County soon after 1822.

I am completely indebted to Mark Lund for the following information on the family of John Francis, Jr. Until Mark sent this portion of the family history to me, I had no idea what happened to this particular branch of the family. Now, for the first time since the very early 1820's, the family is all together again. I am very grateful to Mark.

I. John and Jane Francis
*A. John Francis and Betsy Burris.
**1. Margaret Francis
**2. Mary Ann Francis
**3. Matilda Francis
**4. Salina Francis
John Francis, Jr. later married Abby Ellis in Blount County on May 6, Blount County, TN.
**5. Samuel P.France
**6. Anna Eliza France
**7. John H.France
**8. William S.France
**9. Candias (Candice?) A. France
**4. Salina Francis was listed last and as she was older than the others I conclude that she was Betsy's daughter. Samuel was listed first so I concluded he was Abby's son.
**5. Samuel Francis was born ca. 1844. Records indicate that he enlisted in the Union Army during the civil war and served in the Company I of the 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry. He enlisted on November 20, 1862, was six feet tall, fair complexion, black hair and blue eyes. He gives his age as 21, which does not fit with the census records. Samuel died in Nashville on February 21, 1863 of tuberculosis and is buried at City Cemetery in Nashville according to his service records. As far as I can tell he had no wife or children. No pension was applied for against his service.
**6. Anna Eliza Francis was born about 1848 in Blount County. She married Alexander H. Poore on February 4, 1869 in Blount County. Pension records indicate he was born in Washington County, TN about 1841.
***a. Eva Poore(Feb 1870)
***b. Mary Poore(c 1872)
***c. William Poore(Sept 1873 - 1910)
***d. Belle Poore(c 1876)
***e. Lou Poore(c 1878)
***f. John Poore(c 1879)
***g. Robert F. Poore(Jan 1881)
***h. David W. Poore(Jul 1886)
***i. Pearl H. Poore(Jan 1889)
***j. Maude E. Poore(July 1892)
Alexander is listed in the 1891 census of males living in Loudon County. In 1900 he is living in Roane County. Eliza is dead at that time. She would have died after the birth of their last child about 1892 and 1900. Another source that has researched the Poore family says that Alexander lost ten children to tuberculosis in eleven years. I don't know anything about the families of any of his children except that in 1910 he was living with his daughter-in-law, Annie, and her children Paul, George, Bertha, and Terry. He served in the Union Army during the civil war. According to his pension file he served in Company F of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry after he was conscripted into the Confederate Army. He had some trouble getting a pension because records indicated that he had Confederate service. What is even more interesting is that It appears that a pension check was mailed to him in 1918 and was returned to the Government with the notation "disappeared." Further investigation showed that in the summer of 1918 Captain W.E. McElwee put Alexander on a train with a government ticket bound for the Soldier's Home in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Soldier's home reported that the train ticket was presented by the railroad for payment but that Alexander never arrived at the home. The postmaster reported that "he was in feeble condition and erratic when he left." He was never heard from again.
**7. John H. France November 18, 1868 he married Margaret E. Wimberly in Blount County. She was the daughter of Mark Wimberly and Adeline Hammontree. Margaret was born September 7, 1852 in Blount County and died February 13, 1875 in Loudon County. She is buried at Morganton Cemetery in Loudon County along with two infant children who died January 25 and 26, 1874.
John H. France The 1900 indicates May 1850. I suspect that on the 1850 census rather than age 2 it might have been 2/12 and was transcribed wrong. Military records and his pension file give his birth as May 10, 1845. I think he may have wanted to join the Union Army like his brother and gave an 1845 birth year in order to get into the army. I don't think he would have been allowed to join if they know he was only 13. In order to claim his pension he had to keep using 1845. I conclude that his birth date may have been May 10, 1850 in Blount County. He was a blacksmith by trade. He died December 6, 1913 at the Old Soldiers Home in Los Angeles, California from tuberculosis.
John H. was in the Union Army. He served in Company I of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. He enlisted September 15, 1863 was 5'6", fair complexion, blue eyes and black hair. He was mustered in on December 14, 1863 and was discharged on August 3, 1865. He filed and received a pension for injuries sustained when his horse fell on him "in the Mississippi raid near Collinsville in the State of Tennessee." On April 23, 1864 he was absent without leave from Camp Catlett. He returned to his company in Decatur, Alabama on July 2, 1864 and was sent to Nashville where he arrived on July 10th. On November 11th he was tried for desertion but found not guilty. He was guilty of absence without leave and forfeited his pay. I have wondered why he left the army. The only thing that I conclude at this point is that perhaps he got word that his mother was sick and about to die and went to see her. I have wondered if there are transcripts of his trial somewhere that might provide the answer. If that is the case, then Abby would have died sometime in 1864. No pension was applied for against his service.
***a. Samuel H. France He was born about 1869 and died in Roane County May 10, 1912 of Bright's disease. He married first in Roane County to Josie Spillman on June 6, 1892 and second to Lucinda Knox on September 4, 1894. He had one daughter Bessie France who married John R. Long. The social security death index gives her the following birth and death dates: May 4, 1897 - July 1980.
***b. Charley E. France was the second child of John H. and Margaret. He was born in Loudon County on May 17, 1873 and died at age thirteen on October 15, 1887. He was originally buried at the Louisville Methodist Cemetery, but when TVA built Fort Loudon Dam this cemetery was taken by the lake. He was moved to Louisville Cemetery (Blount County).
***c. Margaret Elizabeth France (my great grandmother) was the last child. She was born in Loudon County on January 12, 1875 the day before her mother died. On September 21, 1890 she married Aaron Andrew Long, son of John and Samantha Long. Aaron was born in Blount County on March 17, 1872 and died there on December 2, 1932. Margaret E. Long died March 12, 1962. Both are buried at Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery. According to the 1910 census Margaret had four children who died in infancy. This is the only one that I have discovered that had a marked grave. Following is information about the descendants of Margaret Elizabeth France, daughter of John H. France of John France (Francis). She was bon in Loudon County on January 12, 1875 and died March 12, 1962 in Blount County. She married Aaron Andrew Long on September 21, 1890 in Monroe County. Aaron was born in Blount County on March 17, 1872 and died in Loudon County on December 2, 1932. Both are buried at Oakland United Methodist Church in Blount County. Some may indicate the cemetery is in Loudon County and others put it in Monroe County.
