Daniel Francis was the third child, and second son of John and Jane Francis of Washington County, Tennessee. He was born in 1797. 28 August, 1822 his father had a document prepared which deeded the one hundred and sixty-eight acre Francis tract to Daniel Francis, and to his brother Ephraim Francis. The deed did not make any provision for the transfer of land to any of the other brothers or sisters. It does, however, establish the fact that John and Jane Francis at least had other, younger children. Another son is named. This son was John Francis, Jr. No land was deeded to him, but provision was made for him to receive money for his portion of the land. All of the Francis tract went to Daniel Francis and to Ephraim Francis. Daniel was to receive the lower portion where he, at that time, already lived. The deed was probated 29 December, 1826. The land was officially divided between Daniel Francis and Ephraim Francis by document on that same day. According to the 1830 census an elderly woman and a young girl were living in the household with Daniel and Martha Francis. The young girl was not one of the children of Daniel and Martha Francis. We have concluded that Daniel's father was dead by 1830, and that the older woman in the household was Daniel's mother. The young girl was Daniel's youngest sister, Jane. Daniel Francis married Martha Gervin, who according to the 1880 census, was born in Virginia. The children of Daniel and Martha Francis were as follows:
