Agnes Francis

Agnes Francis was the second child, and oldest daughter of John and Jane Francis of Washington County, Tennessee. She was born in 1796. Nothing is known of her early life until 25 October, 1821 when she married Henry W. Jones.
Henry was probably a son of Darling and Nancy Nelson Jones. Darling Jones was born 22 July, 1764 in Wake County, North Carolina, a son of Lewis Jones. Nancy Nelson was the daughter of Tennessee Methodist pioneer, William Nelson. Nancy Nelson Jones accused Darling Jones of infidelity, and the marriage ended in divorce in September, 1804.
After the divorce, Nancy Nelson Jones lived on a forty-four acre tract of land granted to her by the court. This land adjoined the land of her father. Henry Jones purchased this tract 9 October, 1826.
2 September, 1834 Henry W. Jones received a tract of land in Haywood County, North Carolina from William Sitton. The tract consisted of one hundred and eighty acres. Henry W. and Agnes Francis Jones moved to Haywood County in 1834 and settled on the land received from William Sitton. The land adjoined that of William C. Francis, brother of Agnes Francis Jones. William Francis had moved to Haywood County, North Carolina in 1828. By the time Henry and Agnes Jones moved to Haywood County four of their five children were already born. Their names were: James Jones, Sarah Jane Jones (born 1826), Rebecca Jones (born 1831), and John S. Jones (born 1832). Mary Francis Jones was born in 1835.
Henry W. Jones died 3 March, 1838. Agnes Francis Jones remained in Haywood County and raised her family.
Very little is known of the children of Henry and Agnes Jones, with the exception of Sarah Jane Jones, and, to some degree, John S. Jones. Sarah Jane Jones joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in Haywood County in 1840. Five years later she professed Jesus Christ as her Savior and LORD at Shook's Camp Meeting. Three years later, in 1848, she married Jesse Franklin Brown of Haywood County. Jesse Brown was a son of Ezekiel and Rachel Harmon Brown. In 1852 Jesse and Sarah Jones Brown moved to Anderson County, Texas. Several of their descendants still live in Texas today. One of the sons of Jesse and Sarah Brown was Henry Ezekiel Brown. He was born 16 January, 1862. 28 December, 1886 he married Telula Marietta Hasty, daughter of Benjamin and Jane Hasty.

L to R: Henry E. Brown, Franklin W. Brown, Beulah W. Brown, Gertrude A. Brown, Helen O. Brown, and Telula M. Brown

Henry and Telula Brown reared a family. Their daughter, Beulah Wiley Brown, was born 1 December, 1895. 27 June, 1917 she married William Spence. One of their daughters is Luanne Spence Taylor of San Antonio, Texas.
In 1850 Agnes Jones was listed as a Head of Household in Haywood County. She was fifty-four years old. In the household with her were her three youngest children: Rebecca Jones, John S. Jones, and Mary Francis Jones.
I know nothing of what happened to either of these children except John S. Jones (and very little about him). In 1851 a deed was prepared for John S. Jones by Agnes Jones, Jesse Brown and wife Sarah Jones, Rebecca Jones, and Mary Jones. A tract of land containing one hundred and seventy four acres. The land was that occupied by Nancy Jones, the widow of Darling Jones. It is not clear whether this was Nancy Nelson Jones, or Nancy Huff Jones, the second wife of Darling Jones. She would actually have considered his widow. At any rate, this is the last mention of John S. Jones I have been able to find. There was a John S. Jones who married Providence Jones in Washington County, Tennessee 24 April, 1852, but I have no proof that this John S. Jones was the son of Henry and Agnes Jones.
We do not know when Agnes Francis Jones died.
