SECOND GENERATION

James Worth (1848-1913) and Francis "Fanny" Cato (1835-?)

James Worth was born on February 5, 1848 in Coffee County, Georgia, the son of William L. Worth and Temperance Sapp. During the years after his father's return from service in the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War, James fathered some three children with neighbor Francis Cato, daughter of Henry Cato and Sarah Peterson. There is no record of a marriage between James and Fanny, and shortly after the birth of their last son James moved with his parents to Manatee County, Florida, where James ultimately married Elizabeth Rebecca Underhill in 1872, divorced her in 1882, and married Celia Stokes in 1884 before his death there on March 9, 1913.

Fanny Cato remained in Coffee County, where she raised her three sons by James Worth (and a daughter Martha, born in 1862, apparently by a different father). All three sons took the Worth surname, and the headstone of Fanny reads "Mrs. Francis Worth, Mother of Wm. Worth, Age unknown."

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: As is the case with the vast majority of the family bio pages on this site, some of the information and details regarding this family are derived from the voluminous research of my uncle Daniel Worth, now available online at my father Gene Worth's web site Worth and Solomon Genealogy. My aunt Iva Yeager also shared her own related research with me more than two decades ago, which first sparked my interest in genealogy.
