Jesse Duke was born on November 7, 1770 in Kershaw County, South Carolina, the son of Robert Duke, who left his will there in 1784. Jesse married first in 1790, although virtually nothing is known about his first wife except the complete names and birthdates of the 11 children she bore him before her death after 1813 (thanks to his own handwritten records in the family bible, found in the possession of a descendant in Texas). Jesse lived with his family in Lancaster County, SC until 1804, when he sold his land and moved to Georgia.
After the death of his first wife before 1820, Jesse Duke married Nancy Waldrop in Jasper County, with whom he had one last child. Jesse won a land lot in Gwinnett County in the 1820 Land Lottery (in present-day Norcross, Georgia), and lived there through 1830, moving to DeKalb County by 1840, and finally to Coosa County, Alabama by the time of his death there in 1849.
