Several children were born to Samuel & Sally
Hatfield BURKETT before her death. Of this first segment of Samuel's family,
most remained for a number of years in Bedford county when their father
migrated to Jefferson County. This event occurred after the deaths of Samuel's
grandfather, Jacob Burkett, Sr. in 1834 and his father, Jacob, Jr. in 1837.
Date of Sally's death remains unknown.
In his father's will dated 15 June 1837, Samuel
was given the option of taking the land on which he lived belonging to
his elder. The sum of four hundred and fifty dollars ($450.00) would be
given the Executors of the estate to be applied on any existing debts of
Jacob Burkett, Jr. If Samuel refused to take the tract of land, the same
offer would be extended to any of the rest of the children who would abide
by the request. (Will Book 3, p.109,110, Bedford County PA-Wills 1837)
A deed transaction records that 165 acres and
16 perches and allowance of six per cent for roads, etc, was purchased
by Samuel Burkett form Wilhelm Willink (Jefferson Co. PA-Deed Book 10,
p.130,6 April 1838)
Family members proclaim that Samuel Burkett arrived in Jefferson County on foot and settled in the area later named "Burkett Hollow." He had walked over the mountains and as carrying a copper kettle slung across his shoulders which contained all of his possessions. After arrival in Jefferson county, Samuel "took up grounds" bordering Cornplanter Kingdom, an Indian Reservation. He built a cabin on his property, then returned to Bedford county for his family. Ten years later, on 20 April in Bedford County, Samuel Burkett and his second wife, Mary relinquished all rights, title, claim, etc to his grandfather, Jacob Burket, Sr., and subsequently to his father, Jacob Burkett, Jr. (Bedford Co. PA-Deed Book z-p.182-20 April 1848)
Samuel was a Quaker. His wife wanted a church built which he did build in Burkett Hollow, Jefferson County, PA. Although he attended with her, he sat at the back of the church and would neither participate in the services nor would he remove his hat. By the 1860 census of Jefferson county, Samuel was deceased. His widow was shown with three of the children still in the household, plus an older son Emanuel P. who was 22 at the time. (Jefferson county, PA, M653-Roll #1118, line 1335-1322)
On the 1870 Census Jefferson Co. M593, Roll #1352, line 165-169, Magdalene Burkett at age 65 was living in the household of Jacob Bachtal in Coolspring. Next door, , lived the son of Magdalene and Samuel Burkett, Peter and his wife, Barbara (Nye). The demise of Mary Magdalene Burkett was reported in the "Brookville Democrat" October 1880.
