1829- Mary Lloyd executed a Power of Attorney to John Lloyd her son and then to Hugh Paterson. She was living in Middlesex Co., NJ at the time and her son was still in Charleston, SC.

DATES marked "***" indicate a fair degree of certainty that the entry is about our family. There were two John Lloyd, Juniors in Charleston, SC in 1807; one lived on Bull St. and the other on Meeting St.
1761- *** John Lloyd, Jr. was born. This date is based on a handwritten family record likely written by Henry Trusler Lloyd that says John Lloyd was 55 when he died in 1816. The document does not say where he was born, however in the 1880 US Census, his son, Henry, gave his father's and mother's birthplace as South Carolina. [Lloyd/Vital/018; Lloyd/Vital/053]

1767- *** Mary of William & Sarah Trusler was baptized on 5 Sep 1767 at St. Philip's Church in Charleston, SC [Lloyd/Vital/024, p.80]
1775-1783- *** The obit for Henry Trusler Lloyd, d. 1889, says his father (John Lloyd, Jr.) was a soldier in the American Revolution. John Lloyd, Jr. was about 14 years old at the start of the war in 1775 and 22 years old at the close in 1783. I haven't found any record to support this claim.
1778- A judgement is recorded John Lloyd vs. Daniel Cannon, Thomas Doughty, John Webb. This was a note from William Trusler to JOhn Webb to John Lloyd for 2200 pounds. "We find for plaintill 148 pounds" on 28 Mar 1784.
1782- There are no LLOYDs in the Charlestown City Directory.
1783- Charleston was incorporated by an Act of the Legislature in 1783 and divided into thirteen Wards. [SC/Misc/005]p.257.
1785- City Directory lists Daniel Cannon at 52 Queen St. No LLOYDs. Thomas Doughty at 108 Meeting St. and William Doughty at 108 Meeting St.
1788- On 15 Jan 1788, a disastrous fire destroyed upwards of two hundred and fifty homes and exceeded three million dollars in losses. [SC/Misc/005] p.302.
1789- *** John Lloyd and Mary Trusler, spinster, were married on 1 Jan 1789 per Lic. by the Rev'd Thomas Frost at St. Philip's Charleston. [Lloyd/Vital/024, p.244]
1790- US Census for Charleston shows a John Lloyd, Junr & Co. with 1 white male over 16; 2 white females; and 1 slave. At the time John was 29; Mary was 23; and their first female child could have been 1 year old. [Lloyd/Vital/011]
1790- Between 1789 and 1800, John and Mary had three daughters: Mary, Eliza, and Anna Maria, named in that order in a property settlement on 4 Jul 1800. On 14 May 1822, an Eliza Lloyd married Benjamin Simmons in St. Philip's Church; this may be John and Mary Lloyd's daughter. [Lloyd/Vital/025, p.109] Their daughter, Eliza, if born between 1789-1800 would have been between 22 and 33 years old at the time.

1798- On 9 Jan 1798 John Lloyd Jr. sold property on north side of George St. to Wm Webb - from estate of William Trusler.
1798- In June 1798 John and Mary Lloyd sold 500 acres on the Jeffry's Creek for $300.
1799- Charleston was hit by a violent earthquake.
1799- John Lloyd Junior of Charleston, merchant, listed as suretie for the will of Ann Timmerly, 16 Aug 1799. [Lloyd/Will/002, p.248]

1800- *** 4 July: Deed for property; John Lloyd Junior to William Webb in trust for Mary Lloyd & Children, Settlement of a lot of land in Meeting Street in the City of Charleston. This is property Mary inherited when her brother, William Trusler Junior died underage, intestate and without issue sometime between 1781 when his father died and 1785 when he would have been of age.

Instead they worked with "factors, middlemen who performed an indispensable economic function in the antebellum South. Factors operated between the grower and purchaser of staple crops. But a factor was more than a broker--a person who merely brings together seller and buyer. Factors conducted business in their own names, and they often made advance payments to planters against the money tey expected to receive when their crops were sold. Quite often the factor became a planter's
major source of credit. And if the factor did not provide credit himself, he arranged a line of credit for the planter. Factors supplied planters with a variety of critical information and serices. To provide market information in both the United States and Europe was an essential duty of a factor. With that information and their factors' advice, planters decided when to sell their crops and in what market. Many factors served as purchasing agents for their planter clients. In this role factors bought goods and supplies ranging from slave provisions to clothes and furniture for the planter
family. Thus the factor was at the same time a supply merchant, a crop broker, a fount of financial information, and a source of financing. For these services planters paid factors a commission, usually 2.5 percent of the gross proceeds from the sale of a crop."_____[SC/Misc/015, p.197]. "The factors, who took the business worries off the minds of the planters, were wealthy, and lined East Bay with their offices."_____[SC/Misc/013,
p.86].1801- Charleston, SC City Directory for 1801: John Lloyd jun., merchant, 202 Meeting St. "The term 'merchant' meant a wholesaler, who stood on a different social plane from the retailer, or humble shopkeeper."_____[SC/Misc/014, p. 104]. It should be noted that in 1790 William Doughty, planter, was located at the same 202 Meeting St. address. John Lloyd's wife, Mary Trusler, was related to the Doughty family.

1807- 12 Mar: John Lloyd of South Carolina names "my esteemed friend Mr. John Lloyd Jun two hundred and fifty pounds sterg. in trust, for his children born and who shall be born of his present wife, Mrs. Mary Lloyd, and living at he time of my death, and I will and direct that said sum be paid as soon as it shall or may be convenient, etc." [Lloyd/Will/006, p.46]

1807- From the 1807 Charleston City Directory, John Lloyd jun. and others are named as Commissioner of Streets & Lamps.
1807- John lloyd Jun. is listed as Treasurer of the St. George's Society in the 1807 Charleston City Directory.
1809- John Lloyd, factor at 166 Meeting St. and another John Lloyd on Bull St.
1810- US Census for Charleston, SC shows only one John Lloyd with 2 male children under 10; 1 male over 45; 1 female under 10; 2 females 10-16; and 1 female over 45. In 1810, John was 49; Mary was 43; William was 5, John was 9; the three girls were born between Oct 1889 and Feb 1801; so there could have been a girl born 1800/01 and under 10 in 1810, and two girls born between 1889 and 1800 who were between 10 and 16. Mary was born in 1867 and would have been under 45; so this is a problem, but all the other ages fit fairly good. [Lloyd/Vital/014]

1813- John Lloyd Senior & John Lloyd Junior along with others were named as Exrs for the will of Thomas Branford Smith of Charleston. The said John Lloyd Senior since died and John Lloyd Junior renounced Exorship, 19 Mar 1813 [Lloyd/Will/002, p.246] (Must find out when Smith wrote his will.)

1816- *** Charleston City Directory. Mary Lloyd, widow of John, lived at 190 Meeting Street. [Lloyd/Vital/013] Is this the property that Mary Trusler Lloyd inherited from her brother, William Trusler?
1818- *** Mary Lloyd conveyed to William Logan a property with a two story wooden house on Meeting St. on 4 Nov 1818. She is referred to as a widow. [Lloyd/Land/012]
1819- Issue of January 11, 1819. Died - the friends and acquaintances of John Lloyd, Jun. are invited to attend his funeral, at his late residence No. 18 Bull Street, tomorrow morning a 7 o'clock. This record plus the 1818 land record that calls Mary Trusler Lloyd a widow indicates there were at least two John Lloyd Juniors in Charleston during the early 1800s. [Lloyd/Vital/026, p. 46]
1819- City Directory has Lloyd, widow, at 37 Church St.
1822- City Directory has Mrs. Mary Lloyd at 36 Bull and Mrs. John Lloyd at 101 Meeting St.
1822- *** Mary Trusler Lloyd moved to New York City according to the obit for her son, Henry Trusler Lloyd which says, "...when he was eleven he was brought to New York by his mother, who had been left a widow. [Lloyd/Vital/002]
1824- One pound sterling = $4.44 in SC.
1825- *** SC Land Record: "Theophilius Elsworth to Wm. Logan, Trustee of M.Lloyd." Document is very difficult to read, but appears to be a transaction on property on Meeting St. although a smaller lot than earlier documents "granted, bargained, sold and released, etc." in 1818 to William Logan and in 1800 that John Lloyd, Jr. sold to William Webb. VERY CONFUSING!! [Lloyd/Land/006]
1829- *** In SC Misc. Records on 22 July 1829 is the Power of Attorney executed by Mary Lloyd to her son John Lloyd and then to Hugh Patersen. Mary Lloyd was living in Middlesex Co., NJ, while her son was still in Charleston.
1842- Henry Trusler Lloyd appears for the first time in the New York City Directory as a "physician" at 3 Prince and living at 27 Stanton.
1850- Mary Lloyd is not living with her son, Henry, in the 1850 US Census for Raritan Twp., Monmouth Co., NJ. [Lloyd/Vital/051]
1860- *** Mary Lloyd, age 93, is living with her son, Henry, and his family in New York City on 15 June 1860. Her son, John, is also living in the same household. Henry is a policeman. [Lloyd/Vital/052]
1861- *** Mary Trusler Lloyd died in NYC on 19 Feb 1861. Obit in the NY Herald for 20 Feb 1861 reads: LLOYD--On Tuesday, February 19, at the residence of her son, Mary Lloyd, in the 94th year of her age. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the residence of her son, No. 270 Broome Street, on Thursday afternoon, at
