10. Frederick Jacobse Bergen
was born on Nov 27 1681 in Flatbush, Ney York. He died before 1762. THIRD
GENERATION
Resided on Staten Island on a farm, in the north precinct or division, which
he purchased of Catharine, widow of George Hooglant, twenty acres of which he
sold June 10th, 1727, for L110, to John Van Pelt. May 2nd, 1726, he also sold
for L225, to Garret Kroezen, eighty acres, laying on the great plain in the rear
of the land, patented to Cornerlius Corson & Co., which plot he recently
purchased of Hendrick Kroesen and others. On the Richmond county records his
name is written "Frederick Berge." About this period farmers were
in the habit of turning out their cattle on the commons for pasturage, each owner
having a distinctive mark, which was recorded on the public record. March 5th,
1740, on the county records of Richmond county, it is recorded of "Frederick
Berge," that "the ear mark of his horse kind, cattle, sheep, &c.,
is a swallow tail at the end of the right ear, and a half moon or half circle
in the upper part of the left ear."
In 1715, he was private in Captain David Aersen's company of Brookyn; in 1738,
a lieutenant of militia in Richmond county, and in 1727 and 1728, a deacon in
the Reformed Dutch Church on the north side of Staten Island. From Richmond county
he removed to Somerset county, N. J., where he owned and cultivated a farm and
died.
Nov. 2, 1752, "Frederick Bergen and Gerretje" his wife, on certificate,
became members of the First Reformed Dutch Church of New Brunswick.
His will is dated May 8, 1757, proved Nov. 22, 1762, and recorded in lib. K,
p. 103 of wills, in the office of secetary of state, New Jersey, in which he
devises his farm, valued at L6000, to his son Hendrick, subject to legacies to
his brothers and sisters, amounting to L450, and subject to the use of his widow
during life. He also bequeathed to his son Jacob for his birthright L5 and a
negro boy named Tom.
