Calvin Ausland, 23, Dies of Auto Crash Injuries
RITES FOR HOFFMAN YOUNG MAN HELD THURSDAY AFTERNOON
A 23-year-old Hoffman service veteran was fatally injured in a two-car collision Saturday night near Sherburne, Minn.
Dead is Calvin John Ausland, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ausland of Hoffman.
The crash occurred at 9:40 p.m. on state highway No. 4, two miles north of Sherburn. Injured in the accident were RIcharde McClelland of South St. Paul, driver of the second car, and two passengers in the Mr. Clelland car. Mr. Ausland died of internal injuries in a Sherburne hospital about half an hour after the accident.
Calvin was born June 14, 1927 at Hoffman, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. John Ausland. He was baptized Aug. 7, 1927 and was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran church June 1, 1941. He was a graduate of Hoffman High School.
At the age of 18 he was called to military services and spent one year in the United States Marine Corps. He received his honorable discharge Aug. 19, 1946.
Later he was taken ill and spent two years and four months in the U.S. Veterans hospital, Minneapolis. He received his release from the hospital last November.
Surviving are his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey (Luella) Soderholm and Mrs. Allen (Mildred) Starner of Hoffman, two brothers, Joel of Elbow Lake and Ivan of Hoffman. He also leaves a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Ausland home and at Bethel Lutheran church of which deceased was a lifelong member. Burial was in Bethel cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Peterson officiating.
The pallbearers were Donald Clarquist, Merlin Arenson, Roy Christopherson, Roger Anderson, Harold Fiebelkorn, and Mervin Johnson.
Calvin, a very popular young man among his many acquaintances was the possessor of a good character and a very congenial disposition. He will be greatly missed in his family circle and among friends which he numbered by the score. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended the grief-stricken members of his family.

Pearl Grace Ausland was born Jan 29, 1914, at Kensington, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Strom. Her death occurred at the age of 31 years.
She was confirmed Dec. 4, 1927, at First Lutheran Church, Kensington, by Rev. Carl G. Zaar. On June 20, 1934, she was united in marriage to Joel Ausland, since which time the couple lived in Hoffman.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Delano Joel; one daughter, Darlene Jane; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Strom of Kensington, and one sister, Mrs. Roy Osterberg(Mae) of Kensington. She was preceded in death by one brother, Dell C. Strom, whose demise occurred July 13, 1939.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and Bethel Lutheran church, Rev. B.G. Holmes and Rev. Carl G. Zaar of Wheaton officiating. Burial was in Bethel cemetery. Pallbeareres were William Anderson, Sidney Nordquist, Carl Swenson, LeMay Westberg, Ingemar Berg and Selmer Olson.
The sincere sympathy of all is extended memebers of the family in their untimely loss of a kind and lovely wife, mother, daughter, and sister.
MRS. MATHILDA AUSLAND SUCCUMBED TUESDAY AT HOME OF DAUGHTER.
  Mathilda Gustava Petterson was born May 29, 1858, at Lindkoping, Ostergotland, Sweden. She came to America with her parents when she was about six years of age. The family lived in Michigan one year, then moved to the Oscar Lake settlement in Douglas county, Minnesota.
  Mrs. Ausland was confirmed in the Oscar Lake church by Rev. Aaron Wahlin. She continued to live in the Oscar Lake settlement until April 8, 1876, when she was united in marriage to Swan Ausland. The young couple then moved to Grant County and settled on a farm in Land township four miles southwest of Hoffman.
  In 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Ausland retired from farming and moved to Hoffman. Five years later, in 1923, Mr. Ausland became ill and was taken to Bethesda hospital, St. Paul, where he died June 22 of that year.
  Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ausland, of whom two, John Ferdinard and Oscar Samuel, died in infancy and a daughter, Mathilda Eleanore, died Oct. 16, 1914, at the age of 24.
  Surviving are four sons and four daughters: John, Helmer and Joseph Ausland of Hoffman, William Ausland of Grants Pass. Ore., Mrs. Chris Swenson (Anna), Mrs. John Henjum (Emely), Mrs. P.A. Johnson (Esther) and Mrs. C.L. Linnes (Viola), all of Hoffman. She also leaves 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, April 21, at 1:30 from thre C.L. Linnes home and 2:00 o'clock at Bethel Church, Rev. B.G. Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery. Pallbearers will be the four sons of the deceased, John, Helmer, William, and Joseph Ausland, Sam Eklof, and S.G. Swenson.
  Mrs. Ausland was one of those pioneer mothers whose rare Christian character was outstanding and worthy of emulation. Her large circle of kin and acquaintances knew her as a lovable and kind mother who always did what she could for the extension of God's Kingdom and for the welfare of the community.
Funeral services for Peter A. Johnson, 68 were held Thursday afternoon from the home and Bethel Lutheran church with Rev. E. H. Peterson officiating. Burial was in Bethel cemetery. Vocal selections were by Maynard Norquist.
Pall bearers were A.C. Studlien, John Gevik, Henry Anderson, Gust Knoll, S.G. Swenson and A.O. Lindstrom.
M. Johnson, the victim of a heart attack, died at his home in Hoffman, at 11:15 a.m. May 30 after an hour's illness.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, deceased was born February 25, 1886 at Hoffman. He attended Hoffman public school and also was a student for a time at Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis.
October 3, 1923, he married Esther Ausland, following which they farmed until retiring and moving to Hoffman in October, 1947. Mr. Johnson was a charter member of Bethel Lutheran church.
Survivors are his widow, one daughter, Elaine; two brothers, John of Hoffman and Arthur of Chokio; three sisters, Mrs. Betty Panders of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Emil (Olga) Schluter of Sedan, and Mrs. John (Lillie) Locken of Muskegon, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Myrtle, Sallie, and Alpha and one brother, Carl.
Those attending funeral services from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Casket bearers were Helmer Ahlbom, Adolph Anderson, Raymond Osterberg, Olaf Swedburg, and Gustaf Swenson. Interment was in the Bethel Church cemetery.
Helmer L. Ausland was born at Hoffman on January 25, 1893, the son of Swen and Matilda Ausland. He was a life-long resident of Hoffman area and a life-long member of the Bethel Lutheran Church at Hoffman. He also served as the Sunday School Superintendent at Bethel for many years.
On Oct. 16, 1917, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, he was united in marriage to Esther Soderholm.
Mr. Auslund passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the age of 76 years, 10 months, and 13 days.
Surviving are his wife Esther; two sons, Warren of San Francisco, Calif. and Stanley of St. Paul; five daughters: Mrs. George (Marion) Short of San Lorenzo, Calif., Mrs. Richard (Helen) Walsh of St. Paul, Mrs. Leonard (Lorraine) Frad of San Lorenzo, Calif., Mrs. Henry (Deloris) Morris of San Lorenzo, Calif., and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Hancock of St. Paul; a brother Joseph Ausland of Hoffman; four sisters; Mrs. John Henjum, Mrs. Axel Lindstrom and Mrs. Christian Swenson, all of Hoffman, and Mrs. Viola Linnes of St. Paul; 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was proceded in death by 2 brothers, John and William, and a sister, Mathilda.

Warren Ausland of San Fransico, Calif., left Sunday after visiting with relatives and friends. He was here to attend the funeral of his father, Helmer Ausland.
He was born April 28, 1893.
Mr. Ausland is survived by his wife, Edith, one son, Paul, Moose Lake, two brothers, Melvin, Brainerd, and Tegner, Little Falls, one sister, Mrs. C. M. Nygaard, Brainerd. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services will be held 3:30 pm Saturday at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home. Dr. Paul K. Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Crow Wing Memorial Gardens Cemetary.
Friends may call at the funeral home from this afternoon until the time of service.
The daughter of Swan and Mathilda Ausland, she was born May 23, 1883 in Lands township. Since her marriage to Christ Swenson on June 21, 1916 she has lived in Hoffman.
Surviving are her husband, three sisters-Mrs. John (Emily) Henjum of Hoffman, Mrs. Axel (Esther) Lindstrom of Hoffman, Mrs. Viola Linnes of St. Paul, and one brother, Joseph Ausland of Hoffman.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Hoffman, Rev. John Dehaan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were-Per Swenson, Arnold Gruber, Adrian Linnes, Lowell Linnes, Luther Linnes and Dayton Martinson.

Funeral services for Axel O. Lindstrom were held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1977, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Hoffman, with Rev. Robert Vedell officiating. interment was in the church cemetery.
The son of Peter and Sigrid Lindstrom. Axel was born on March 23, 1890, in Land township. He was united in marriage to Sophia Torgerson on March 26, 1924, in Stephen, MN. He farmed in Land township much of his life, and was employed for many years at the Stetten Implement Co. working there until retirement age. Mrs Lindstrom preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 1955.
On Aug. 31, 1961, he married Esther Ausland Johnson in Douglas county, and lived in Hoffman. Mr. Lindstrom was active in church affairs, being on the church board and singing in the church choir.
Axel Lindstrom, 87, a resident of Hoffman, died on Sunday, Nov 13, at his home.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters; Mrs. Lorene Mayer of El Cerrito, CA and Mrs. Delos(Eleanor) Ahlbrecht of Burffalo Lake/ a stepdaughter, Mrs. Charles (Elaine) Roberts of Ludlow, SD, 6 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, a sister Mrs. Ruth Lynch of San Bernadino, CA, a brother O.R. (Rex) Lindstrom of Washington, VA. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, a brother, and a granddaughter, Debra Ellyn Ahlbrecht.
Providing music at the funeral were Mrs. Helen Dynda, organist, and Maynard Nordquist, soloist. Pallbearers were grandsons and grand-nephews; Peter-Kasal, Reed Ahlbrecht, Lane Nordquist, Daniel Nordquist, Elliot Nordquist, and Richard Gulbrandson.
Melvin Ausland Dies at 82
Melvin A. Ausland, 82, of 801 Lake Street, died Friday evening at the Bethany Samaritan Nursing Home.
Mr. Ausland was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rose; two sons, Marvin of Brainerd and Walter, Minneapolis; one daughter, Mrs. Leslie (Helen) Carolson of Britt; one brother, Tegnar of Little Falls; one sister, Mrs. Alma Nygaard of Great Falls, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 1:30 pm Tuesday at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home. Dr. Paul K. Hendricks will officiate, with burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call beginning Monday at 5 pm until the time of services.
Mildred Starner
Mrs. Allen (Mildred) Starner, 66, lifetime resident of Hoffman, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Lake Region Hospital. Services will be Saturday Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Hoffman, with the Rev. Robert Vedell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The daughter of John and Anna Ausland, she was born April 5, 1913, at Hoffman. After graduating from Hoffman High School and Moorhead State College, she taught school at Eldred for two years. On Aug. 23, 1936, she married Allen Starner. She taught school at Hoffman for 19 years, retiring in 1978. In 1972, she was selected outstanding elementary teacher from Grant County at the state fair. She was organist for many years at the Bethel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Joanne of Minneapolis; two sons, Richard of Crystal and Stuart of Bozeman, Mont; five grandchild; a sister Mrs. Harvey (Louella) Soderholm of Hoffman; and two brothers, Joel Ausland of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Ivan Ausland of Hoffman.
Friends may call at the Erickson Funeral Home, Hoffman, this evening and Saturday morning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 25 at the Bethel Lutheran Church for Mrs. Allen (Mildred) Starner of Hoffman. The Reverend Robert Vedell officiated. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Donald Dynda was the organist, while Mrs. Robert Vedell was the soloist. Pallbearers were John Starner, David Starner, Mark Soderholm, Steven Soderholm, David Fiebelkorn.
Mrs. Starner was born on April 5, 1913 to John and Anna Ausland. She was born in Hoffman, and graduated from the Hoffman High School and Moorhead State College. Mildred taught at Eldred, MN. for two years and on August 23, 1936 she married Allen Starner. Mrs. Starner taught in the Hoffman School for nineteen years and retired in 1978. She was selected the Outstanding Elementary Teacher from Grant County at the Minnesota State Fair in 1972. She also served as organist at the Bethel Lutheran Church for many years.
Mrs. Starner died on Wednesday, Aug 22 at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls at the age of 66.
Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Joanne of Minneapolis; two sons, Richard of Crystal and Stuart of Boseman, Mont.; five grandchildren; a sist4er, Mrs. Harvey (Luella) Soderholm of Hoffman; and two brothers, Joel Ausland of Apachee Junction, Ariz. and Ivan Ausland of Hoffman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Calvin John.

The son of Swan and Mathilda Ausland. Joseph was born on Feb. 19, 1900, in Land township. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and was a barber in Hoffman and Forest Lake until he retired in Hoffman.
Joseph Ausland, 77, a lifetime resident of the Hoffman community, died on Sunday, Nov. 27, at the Grant County Hospital in Elbow Lake.
Survivors include three sisters: Mrs. John (Emily) Henjum and Mrs. Axel (Esther) Lindstrom, both of Hoffman, and Mrs. Viola Linnes of Albert Lea. Many nieces and nephews also survive. he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Providing music for the services was Maynard Nordquist, soloist, and Mrs. Donald Dynda, organist. Serving as pallbearers were David Fiebelkorn, Tim Soderholm, Mark Soderholm, Scott Starner, Mark Ausland, and Joel Spaulding.
Anna was born on Dec 29, 1886, in Land township, the daughter of Peter and Christina Ahlbom. She was married to S. John Ausland on May 28, 1908. Mr. Ausland passed away in January of 1966. Mrs. Ausland had been very active in church affairs.
Mrs. Anna Ausland, a life-long resident of Hoffman, died on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Hoffman Care Center where she had made her home the past several months.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Joel Ausland of Apache Junction, AZ, Mrs. Harvey (Luella) Soderholm of Hoffman, Mrs. Allen (Mildred) Starner of Hoffman, and Ivan Ausland of Hoffman, 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Calvin John, one brother, Helmer, and one sister, Hildur.

Anna Ausland the daughter of Peter and Christina Ahlbom was born December 29, 1886 in Land Township. Mrs. Ausland was married to S. John Ausland May 28, 1908. Mr. Ausland passed away January 3, 1966. Mrs. Ausland had been very active in church affairs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son Calvin John, one brother Helmer, and one sister, Hildur.

The daughter of Swan and Mathilda Ausland, Esther was born on Dec. 15, 1894, in Land township, Grant county. She was united in marriage to Peter A. Johnson on Oct. 3, 1923. The couple farmed in Land township until 1946 when they moved to Hoffman. Mr. Johnson died on May 30, 1954.
On Aug. 31, 1961, she was married to Axel Lindstrom, and they continued to live in Hoffman. Mr. Lindstrom died on Nov. 13, 1977, and since that time Mrs. Lindstrom has lived at the Hoffman Care Center.
Mrs. Lindstrom died on Sunday, June 24, 1979, at the Care Center here.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Elaine) Roberts of Ludlow, SD; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. John (Emily) Henjum of Hoffman, and Mrs. Viola Linnes of Albert Lea; two step-daughters; Mrs. Frank (Lorene) Mayer of El Cerrito, CA, and Mrs. Delos (Eleanor) Albrecht of Buffalo Lake, and six step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

The son of Amund and Turid Henjum. John was born February 28, 1887 in Sogn, Norway. He came to the United States in 1907 and settled in Hoffman. John later homesteaded in South Dakota and then returned to Hoffman in 1910.
John Henjum was united in marriage to Emily Ausland in November 20, 1912, and has lived in Hoffman since then. He owned adn operated the Hoffman Meat Market with John Ausland for almost 45 years, selling out in 1956. He continued working part time until 1976. He was active in community affairs serving as city treasurer for many years on the school board, church board, and the Hoffman Volunteer Fire Department.
John Henjum died Wednesday, November 26, at the Douglas County Hospital.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters; Mrs. Thordis Whittenmore of Elgin, Oregon, and Mrs. Arnold (Vivian) Gruber of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Martin (Tordis) Grimsrud of Drammen, Norway.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, three brothers, and a daughter Signe Martinson.
Providing music was Colleen Larson as organist, and Maynard Nordquist as soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Thomas Talms, Dayton Martinson, Adrian Linnes, Marshall Bjerke, Ivan Ausland, and Harvey Soderholm.
The daughter of Swan and Mathilda Ausland, Emily was born October 14, 1887 in Land Township, Grant County. With the exception of one year, she has been a lifelong resident of the Hoffman Area. Emily was baptized at the Wennersborg Church, confirmed at Bethel , and was united in marriage to John Henjum November 20, 1912 at Bethel Church in Hoffman. Mr. Henjum passed away November 26, 1980.
Mrs. Henjum had been very active in the activities of the church including the ladies circle. Mrs. John Henjum died on Saturday, May 22, at the Hoffman Care Center at the age of 94 years.
Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. Thordis Whittemore of Elgin, OR, and Mrs. Arnold (Vivian) Gruber of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; one sister; Mrs. Viola Linnes of Albert Lea.
Emily was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter Signe Martinson, four brothers, and three sisters. Erickson Funeral Home of Hoffman was in charge of the arrangements.
