AFRICA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL

TERMS

The medal was awarded to those who served in various small expeditions in both east and west Africa.

CLASPS

There are forty five clasps to the medal; With a few exceptions the clasps were awarded to native troops, only a few British officers and NCOs on detachment receiving the medal. The only occasion on which a sizeable British force was deployed was during the Somaliland opereations of 1902-04.

DESCRIPTION

A circular, silver medal for combatants and bronze medal for native followers..

OBVERSE

The obverse shows one of three types - Edward VII (1902-10) , George V (1910-20), Elizabeth II (1952-56)

REVERSE

Britannia is depicted holding a trident,palm branch and scroll. In the right background are the sun and the British Lion. At the bottom  the word AFRICA appears in exergue.

MOUNTING

A plain, straight suspender is attached to the medal.

RIBBON

The ribbon is of yellow with black edges and two thin green stripes towards the center.

DATES

The medal was authorized in 1902 and awarded for various small expeditions in both East and West Africa .

NAMING

Naming is in small, impressed capitals
