He was a son of Ludwig and Christina (Mahn) Igender,2 who were married 11 October 1748, Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.3 Ludwig Igender died in Washington County, Maryland about 1790.4 He was apparently a son of Johannes and Margarita Aegendener who came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 21 September 1731, aboard the ship "Britannia" sailing from Rotterdam, Holland by way of Cowes, England. Arriving on the ship along with Johannes and Margarita were: Katherina, age 12; Anna Kreta, age 5; Henriks, age 10; Ludwig, age 3; Magdelena, age 2; Dorothia, age 6.5 Johannes and his family settled in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, living on a 300 acre tract of land. He became a naturalized citizen there in 1747.6 Johannes and at least three of his children, (Henry was one of them, the other two seem to have been daughters), migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina in 1758.7 Ludwig Agner is said to have had sons, John, Joseph, and George.8 It is probable, his son John, is the John who came to Rockbridge County, Virginia. John Agner shows in Washington County, Maryland in 1790.9 The following document proves that Ludwick and Christine had at least: John, Catherine who married Peter Holmes; George; Margaret who married Christian Piper; and Mary who married Christian Tomer (or Domer). While still in Washington County, MD, at the request of John Eagnor the following deed was recorded June 13th 1791 to wit: This indenture made the eighth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one between Christine Eagener the late [wife ? doesn't look like the word, but makes sense] of Lodowick Eagoner deceased and Peter Holmes and Catherine his wife[,] George Eagner[,]Christian Piper and Margaret his wife being daughter of Ludowick Eagner[,]Christian Tomer and Mary his wife _____ daugther of the aforesaid Lodowick Eagner deceased of the one part and John Eagner of Washington County and State of Maryland of the other part witnesseth that Lodowick Eagner died intestate and that the above parties each haveing a lawful claim of the said property of the deceased____________ [and his estate?] and to prevent any further trouble and expenses we the above Christine Eagner and Peter Holmes and Catherine his wife[,] George Eagner son of Lodwoick Eagner[,] Christian Piper and Margaret his wife[,] Christian Tomer and Mary his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds current money ___ ___ ___ __ in hand by the said John Eagnor son and heir of Lodowick Eagner _____ before the _______ and delivery of _________ _________. They most likely traveled here in a wagon train about 1801, with the families of Philip and Nancy Muterspaugh, Frederick and Michael Siders, John Tribbett, and possibly others. However, the good reports of life in Rockbridge may have flowed to them from friends and relations already settled in Rockbridge. They may have moved to Rockbridge after 1801. The personal property tax records for Rockbridge County, VA are missing from 1800-1810. The first known instance of the family's arrival in Rockbridge is that of John2 Agner purchasing a tract of land in Rockbridge on 3 Jul 1804. John1 Agner may have followed his son and daughters Christina and Susanna (who had settled in Rockbridge in 1801 with the Muterspaw and Siders families). It is known John Agner lived near the Ayres (Eyres), Entsminger, and Hostetter families upon settling in Rockbridge. Upon settling in Rockbridge County, VA, John determined to sell his farm in Washington County Maryland. At the request of Solomon Dedic, the following deed was recorded 6th June 1805 unto Witnesses. This indenture, made the twenty-eighth day of March in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and five between John Eignenor of Washington County in the state of Maryland, farmer of the one part, and Solomon Dedic of the said county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said John Eigenor, for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred pounds of current money to him in hand paid by the said Solomon Dedic, the receipt whereof the said John Eignor doth hereby acknowledge _____ the said John Eigenor had he given, granted, bargained, sold, ________, and confirmed unto and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain, sell, ___________ and confirmed unto the said Solomon Dedic, his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract of land called "Benjaner? Acknowledged before John Good, George Smith. 9b Very soon after selling the family farm in Washington County, MD, on 19 April 1805, John Eigander, late of Washington County, MD purchased 118 acres from Ulerick Hosteter and Stephen R. Price for $300.00. This tract was on the waters of Whistle Creek, adjoining Robert Wasson, John Symons, and bounding a large grant and survey of Ulk. Hostetter which was sold to John Eigander.10 "John Eigander, late of Washington County, Maryland," purchased a tract of land containing 205 acres on 22 April 1805, from Ulrick Hostetter, and Elizabeth his wife. This property was located on Colliers Creek and adjoined Abram Cox, Robert Wasson, and was the tract which said Hostater had purchased from Rebecca Boyles, adjoining Samuel Willson, Hugh Wilson, and John Mackey.11 John's wife Margaret was living on 28 March 1805, when he sold the farm in Washington County, MD. however, she appears to have died between this date and the 1810 Federal Census of Rockbridge County, VA. John Agner's household consisted of one male above age 45, and one female aged 16-26 in 1810.12 Indicating he was evidently a widower with one daughter still in his household. The widowed John Aignor soon found a bride. On 29 August 1811, he united in marriage with Susanna Walkup, widow of William Walkup, Rev. D. Blain officiating.13 On 22 February 1826, John Agnor, Senr. and Susannah, his wife decided to reduce the size of the home farm. They sold 113 acres to Andrew McCoy, Sr. This tract was located on Whistle Creek, and had been conveyed by Ulrich Hostetter and Stephen R. Price to John Agner on 19 April 1805. Five acres were deducted from this tract and given to John B. Ruley by a Title Bond. Both John and Susannah affixed their marks to this document. John B. Ruley, Daniel McKeeman, Daniel Ayres, Jr. and Virga, were the witnesses.14 John felt his age catching up to him, and evidently suffered a period of uncertainty of life. On 9 June 1824, he made his last will and testament.15 He lived for several years after this date. He was aged 80-90 in 1830.16 On 1 April 1833, his will was probated. He left the following legacies: "To my wife Susanna Agner", land during her lifetime bounded by the following: Robert Wilson, James Mackey, and John Mackey; also 1 horse, 4 cows, all stock of sheep and hogs, a saddle and bridle, all grain, all household and kitchen furniture, farming tools, loom and tackings, and all other property on the land except the balance of cows and horses, also all bonds and money after the debts and expenses, except a bond of George Agnor's which is to be given him upon my death. My wife is to relinquish her right to $225.00 which I obligated myself to leave her at my death, before our marriage. "To my daughter Christiana Muterspaw", $20.00 to be paid by "my son George Agnor." "To my son George Agner," the tract of land on which I live reserving my wife her life's estate, the rest of my land he may take possession of at my death. The balance of my horses and cows, and also his bond. William Willson of Lexington to be executor. Signed John Agner (his mark) Witnesses: William Ruley, Jno. B. Ruley, and Andrew McCoy. On 6 June 1824. a Codicil to his will was made. In this Codicil he leaves to "my grandson" John Agner, Jr., "son of my son John," a part of a tract of land.17 Susannah (Walkup) Agner remained on the farm a few years longer. She apparently died in about 1844, as her estate was appraised 28 March 1844.18 William Armstrong was appointed the administrator.19 John and Susannah (Walkup) Agner evidently had no children. His children all seem to have been from a previous marriage to Margaret. It is apparent John Agner did not mention all of his children in his will. Perhaps they had already received their legacies. The known children of John1 Agner follow: + 2 i. John2 Agner (John1), born between 1765 and 1784.38 He was very likely married in Washington County, Maryland prior to coming to Rockbridge County, Virginia to Barbara. Her surname before marriage has not yet been located. On 30 July 1823, in Rockbridge County, Virginia he married Polly Young, widow of William Young, A. B. Davidson officiating.39 John Igander purchased 33 acres on Colliers Creek on 3 July 1804, from George Culler and Susannah, his wife. This tract adjoined Samuel Goodman, Joseph Patton, and John Hays.40 In 1810, his household consisted of three males under age 10, two males aged 10-16, one female aged 10-16, one male aged 26-45 and one female aged 26-45.41 On 6 May 1811, John Eiginor, and Barbara his wife, sold their 33 acre tract on Colliers Creek to Samuel Goodman for the sum of $33.00. It then adjoined James Makkey, Joseph Patton, and Samuel Goodman. Both John and Barbara Eiginor affixed their marks to this transaction, indicating they could not read and write.42 In 1820, John Agner, Jr.'s household consisted of: one male under age 10, two males aged 10-16, one male aged 16-18, three males aged 18-26, one female under age 10, one male over age 45, and one female aged 26-45. There were three persons employed in agriculture in his household, and one person employed in commerce.43 In 1830, his household consisted of: two males under age 5, one male aged 5-10, one female under age 5, one female aged 5-10, one male aged 30-40, one female aged 20-30 and one female aged 70-80.44 In 1840, his household consisted of: one male under age 5, two males aged 10-15, one male aged 15-20, one female under age 5, two females aged 5-10, two females aged 10-15, one male aged 30-40, and a female aged 30-40.45 He does not appear in Rockbridge Census after this date.46 On 15 September 1841, John Agnor, Jr. took out a deed of trust, with John B. Conevey acting as trustee. He was indebted to Cumings and Echols for $35.36. He put up a crop of corn growing on 25 or 26 acres to secure the debt. He made his mark upon this document, and John B. Conevey signed.47 The known children of John2 Agner, Jr. and his two wives follow: + 9 i. Martin3 Aignor, born c1797. + 10 ii. John3 Agner III, "Sly John,"48 born c1800-1810.49 11 iii. George3 Agner,50 died in 1825.51 At his death he owned: 1 mare, 1 bridle and martingale, a silver watch, 1 falling ax, 1 sickle, 1 mowing sythe, 1 trunk, 1 lot of books, 1 looking glass, and 1 pork knife.52 + 12 iv. Jacob3 Agner,53 born c1804. + 13 v. Susan3 Agner, born c1832. 5. George Agner (John1), born about 1781 in Maryland.54 He apparently married in Washington County, Maryland to Susanna Siders, a daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Wolfe) Siders.55 Susannah was born c1784 in Maryland.56 George and Susanna (Siders) Agner lived on the farm in Rockbridge which George inherited from his father, here they reared their large family. On 3 March 1823, George and Susannah (Siders) Agner, along with John and Elizabeth Tribut, sold their undivided interest (1/6) in a tract of land on the headwaters of Kerrs Creek, to Matthew White. This had been the property of Frederick Siders, now deceased, who had purchased it 15 April 1814 from John Hostetter. Susannah Egnar was an heir of Frederick Siders, as was Betsy Tribut. This land adjoined Samuel Miller.57 On 23 November 1836, George Agnor decided to add to his farm, purchasing 14 1/2 acres from Robert and Elizabeth Wilson on the waters of Whistle Creek.58 On 4 October 1841, George added acreage to his farm, purchasing 41 acres from John and Elizabeth Aignor on the waters of Whistle Creek. This property adjoined Robert Wilson, and the property of the late John Aignor.59 George and Susanna continued to reside on the home farm. On 29 October 1846, they determined it to their best advantage to sell 39 acres on Whistle Creek to Robert Wilson. This property cornered George Aignor, and Robert Wilson's Boyle tract, as well as the lands of John Aignor deceased, and now George Aignor's.60 On 10 October 1850, George Agner felt his age catching up to him and made out his last will and testament.61 He devised in the following manner: "To my beloved wife" the use of 1/3 of my real estate including buildings, except a piece of land which I shall describe to be sold. Also household and kitchen property in the amount of $40.00, also 1 cow, 4 sheep, and 4 hogs of her choice. The executors are to lay off and sell about 50 acres of my land adjoining the lands of Jacob Ford, Hugh W. Mackey, the land of Ro. Wilson, purchased of Ruley. To "my son James Agner" 100 acres of land subject to my wife's dower, to be laid off so as to include my residence; 1 horse, 1 cow, 4 sheep, and 4 hogs. Executor to sell "my horse Ned." "My son Samuel" to receive the residue of land subject to my wife's dower, to be laid off to include the old buildings that belonged to my father; 1 horse. If he lives 5 years after my death, if he dies before 5 years, the land is to revert and remain part of my estate and to be sold and the money divided and paid to my surviving sons and daughters for their own separate use and benefit. If "son Samuel" lives 5 years after my death, he shall pay his sisters, Polly, Sally, and Susan $10.00 each, and my sons John and Andrew Agner $10.00, each. "Son James" to pay "my daughters Peggy, Nancy, and Anna," $10.00 each, and son David $20.00, 2 years after my death. The money from the sale of land and residue of my personal property to be paid as follows: "John, Polly, Sally, Susan, Peggy, Nancy, Anna, Andrew, and David." "My friends William White and William C. Lewis of Lexington" are appointed executors. On 10 October 1850, George Agner affixed his signature to this document, it was witnessed by A. S. Bacon, and John McCown. his will was proven in Court 4 June 1855.62 Susannah (Siders) Agner evidently followed George in death as she does not appear to have been living at the time of the sale of his personal property.63 Their children were: 14 i. Susan3 Agner, married 21 April 1831, Joseph Agnor (#25).64 He died previous to 19 October 1837.65 She married 20 February 1840, Valentine Nicely, Rev. A. B. 1 officiated.66 + 15 ii. Jacob died in January or February 1856, testate, in Rockbridge County, VA.84 In 1810, his household contained: two males under age 10, one male aged 16-26, one female aged 16-26.85 In 1820 his household consisted of four males under age 10, two males aged 10-16, a female aged 16-26, one male aged 26-45, one female aged 26-45.86 By 1830, his family had increased to include: two males aged 10-15, three males aged 15-20, one1 male aged 20-30, one male aged 40-50, one female aged 30-40. There was also a male in the household aged 90-100.87 On 29 March 1830, Jacob Agner purchased 20 acres from Nathaniel Gaylor, adjoining James W. Long, Jno. Anderson, Andrew Walkup, Nathaniel Gaylor, and himself.88 On 6 June 1833, he purchased a tract of 23 1/4 acres on the waters of Whistle Creek from Robert and Elizabeth Wilson. This land was located at the foot of House Mountain and adjoined Borden's Grant. This tract contained land and tenements.89 On 1 August 1834, Jacob Aignor again decided to add to his holdings, and purchased 41 acres 68 poles from Samuel Clark of Staunton.90 Samuel Clark had been authorized to sell Borden's lands.91 This tract was near House Mountain and adjoined Mrs. Neal, Martin Aignor, and Benjamin Logan.92 On 2 August 1836, Jacob Egnor again added to his farm. He purchased 53 acres, 1 rod from Daniel Ayres, Jr. and Hannah his wife, on the East side of House Mountain. This was the same tract with two small additions that Daniel Eyres, Jr. had recently purchased from Philip Muterspaw. This tract adjoined the heirs of Thomas Thompson, deceased, James Clark, and the heirs of Robert Bare, deceased. This document was signed by Daniel Ayres, Senr., Daniel Ayres, Jr., and Hannah Ayres, (all made their mark).93 On 28 March 1840, Jacob Agnor, John's son, purchased 124 acres from John and Margaret Carter. This land was located on the waters of Colliers Creek, near House Mountain and cornered Entsminger's old survey, Henry McLaughlin's line, and Barbara Replogle's. 94 On 6 February 1841, Jacob Agner, Sr. with James D. Davidson acting as trustee, put up a tract of land containing about 70 acres on the waters of Whistle Creek to secure a debt to M. & W. White of $248.78. This land adjoined Nathaniel Gaylor, Joseph Agnor's heirs, Robert Montgomery, and Matthew White. It was the same land which Jacob Agner had purchased from James Gold and Nathaniel Gailor. He also put up 140 acres on Whistle Creek where he lived. This tract adjoined Robert Willson, Henry B. McCoy, Craig and Alexander Bane, and George Palmer. Jacob Agner, Sr. and Jas. D. Davidson signed this document.95 On 2 February 1843, Jacob Agnor, with James D. Davidson acting as trustee, put up 70 acres on Whistle Creek adjoining the lands of Cumings, Matthew White, Thomas Kerr, and others where he lived. This also mentioned Sly John Agnor's wheat, and to convey the rent of plantation that is rented to Sly John Agnor and Andrew Moutherspaugh for one year. to secure a debt of $64.55 owed to M. and W. White.96 On 3 March 1843, Jacob found it again necessary to secure a debt. John W. Brokenbrough acted as trustee. Jacob put up 124 1/2 acres, adjoining John Riplogle, George Muterspaugh, and others on the waters of Colliers Creek. It was the same tract upon which he resided. He also put up personal property.97 On 6 September 1841, Jacob Aignor and Elizabeth his wife, sold 45. 40/100 acres to Susannah Aignor, William Aignor, Elizabeth Aignor, and Mary E.
