Yellowknife has lots to offer both residents and visitors. There are restaurants featuring a wide variety of menu items, including Arctic char. Although many communities in the North are under some form of liquor rationing, or even full prohibition, Yellowknife has a number of pubs and lounges. The Bush Pilot's Brew Pub is the first micro brewery in the Northwest Territories and is located in the historic section of Yellowknife called Old Town.
For many residents, the highlight of the year is Caribou Carnival. Usually during the last week in March, there is a festival featuring bannock (native style biscuits) making, log sawing, fish eating, ice sculpting and fireworks. The highlight of the carnival is the Canadian Championship Dog Derby, which see teams of the world's finest sled dogs competing in a 150 mile race across the frozen Great Slave Lake. The purse is $30,000 and the competition is fierce.
June is the time of year for the Annual Midnight Classic Golf Tournament. This one of a kind spectacular is held at the Yellowknife Golf Club. Imagine playing on oiled sand "greens" with a daylight tee time of 2:00am!! Other summer celebrations include Raven Made Daze, Folk on the Rocks and the Midnight Sun Sea-Plane Fly-In.
During the winter months, spectacular views of the Aurora Borealis can be enjoyed. Researchers throughout the north continually try to predict the current aurora forecast.
