The Forks is an expanse of 56 acres of riverside property in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. It is developed as a "meeting place," a special and distinct all-season gathering and recreation site that includes the perspectives of The Forks as Canada's crossroads, the meeting of the old and new, the meeting of diverse peoples, and place for people to meet, work and play year-round. The Forks offers a kaleidoscope of activities and festivals, a public market, unique shopping facilities, waterfront docking and riverside walkways. Open daily year round. Free parking.
ASSINIBOINE RIVERWALK/THE FORKS HISTORIC PORT
The Assiniboine Riverwalk and The Forks Historic Port offer casual boat docking facilities. Outdoor performance areas and a natural terraced amphitheatre complete the Port's scenic picture. The Riverwalk follows the curves of the Red and Assiniboine rivers to the grounds of the Legislative Building. From late December through early March the river ice is also groomed for skating and cross-country skiing on the popular River Trail. Canoe and rowboat rentals are available in summer. The Splash Dash Water Bus has half-hour bus rides.
FORKS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
The Forks Nationa Historic Site rests on nine beautifully landscaped acres along the west bank of the Red River, offering a scenic view across the water to historic St. Boniface. Interpretive programs, special group tours, festivals and heritage entertainment are offered from May until Labour Day, and also during Le Festival du Voyageur in February. It also features an open air amphitheatre, a playground, picnic area and dock.
THE FORKS MARKET
The Forks Market offers fresh and specialty foods, a vast array of ethnic delicacies, fast-foods and four full-service restaurants. The Hayloft is brimming with locally handcrafted items, art, crafts and other specialties from across the nation and around the world. Aboriginal art, jewelry and pottery are available. Atriums, skylights and a bright, airy courtyard enhance a unique shopping experience. These historic buildings were originally stables. Open year round.
