There is always something happening in British Columbia! Some of Victoria's bigger events seem to be centred on the water. In late May there is the annual Swiftsure Lightship Classic Sailing Races, and visitors can watch the events as first the boats gather in the Inner Harbour, then on race day, the waterfront off Beacon Hill Park is vibrant with the colour of spinnakers as hundreds of sailboats jockey for position. In March and April visit Ucluelet and Tofino for the Pacific Rim Whale Festival.
Mid-June in Vancouver see the colour and excitement of the International Dragon Boat Festival, and for four nights at the end of July and early August, be overwhelmed by the pyrotechnics of the Benson and Hedges Inc Symphony of Fire international fireworks competition where fireworks are launched from a barge in English Bay. Most visitors to British Columbia have never seen logger sports-exciting displays of log-rolling, axe-throwing, spar-tree-climbing and log-sawing by skilled professional loggers. Squamish is the site in early August of Squamish Days Logger Sports - the largest such even in Canada. In early August the largest airshow in North America is held in Abbotsford - the Abbotsford International Airshow. Throughout the year, Whistler hosts more important and exciting events than is possible to list here - including mountaintop symphonies and World Cup skiing. In early October be sure to be in the Okanagan Valley for the Okanagan Valley Wine Festival, and discover for yourself why BC wines have been winning major international awards.
Every Canada Day weekend Williams Lakes hosts BC largest rodeo, mid-July visitors to Kimberley tap their toes at the Old Time Accordion Championships, and early August in Taylor, near Fort St.John is the World's Invitational Gold Panning Championships.
These events are but a small sampling of the unique, exciting and entertaining line up of year round entertainment available to visitors to British Columbia.
