Some years ago, British Columbia wines were not likely to be found on the wine list of a fine restaurant, however, the 1980s saw substantial development of the BC wine industry. The new focus was on quality of locally grown grapes with the introduction of new varities.
Now, British Columbia wines are very highly regarded around the world and consistently win major awards. In 1993, wines from eight wineries were awarded three gold, thirty-two silver and forty-five bronze medals at some seventeen international competitions. To be assured of the finest quality and 100% BC grapes, look or ask for Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) wines in local liquor stores or wine stores. You may wish to try a truly unique BC wine, ice wine - a sweet dessert wine fermented from grapes left on the vine to freeze - or an authentic Canadian champagne - one winery has developed a fine bottle-fermented champagne that is now stocked in all Canadian consulates around the world and which consistently beats expensive French champagne in blind taste tests!!
The major area for vineyards and wineries in British Columbia is the Okanagan Valley, where the soil and weather conditions are ideal for grapes. Other wineries may be found in the Fraser Valley and surprisingly, in the Duncan/Cobble Hill area on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Most wineries welcome visitors to tour their operation, and offer you the opportunity to taste and purchase their wines.
A fine bottle of British Columbia wine is probably one of the most appreciated gifts or souvenirs to take home for a special friend or family member...as long as you can refrain from savoring it yourself!!
