JEWISH TRIAL
After Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemani, he was brought first to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest. Jesus was asked by Annas to explain about his doctrine and the disciples who followed him. Jesus replied that he had taught in synagogues and temples where the Jews met. He faced Annas and told him to ask those who had heard him teach, if he wanted to know what was said. One of the officers upset by the way Jesus spoke struck him with the palm of his hand. Annas then had Jesus bound and sent to the high priest Caiaphas. (St. John 18: 13-14)
Jesus was brought before Caiaphas the high priest and the Sanhedrin where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter having following Jesus entered and sat with the servants to watch the events. Many witnesses were brought before the hight priest Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin who tried to find false testimony against Jesus so they could have him put to death. Finally two false witnesses were found who stated that Jesus said "He could destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days." Jesus kept silent to these allegations and did not bother defending himself. The high priest then put Jesus under oath asking if he was the Christ, the Son of God! Jesus said that was so and that hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. The high priest then accused Jesus of blasphemy, turning to the others he asked what their opinion was. The chief prist, elders and council replied that Jesus is deserving of death. (St. Matthew 26: 57-66) The palace guards then blindfolded Jesus and mockingly taunted him to identify them as they each passed by, spat upon him, and struck him in the face.
(St. Matthew 26: 57-68) Now those who had taken Jesus led him away to Caiphas the high priest where the Scribes and the elders had gathered together. But Peter was following him at a distance, even to the courtyard of the high priest and he went in and sat with the attendants to see the end. Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were seeking false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. But last of all two false witnesses came forward, and said "This man said, I am able to destrroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it after three days." Then the high priest, standing up, said to him. "Dost thou make no answer to the things that these men prefer against thee?" But Jesus kept silence. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us whether thou art the Chrst, the Son of God." Jesus said to him, "Thou hast said it. Nevertheless, I say to you hereafter you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming upon the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his garments, saying, "He has blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" And they answered and said, "He is liable to death." Then they spat in his face and buffeted him; while others struck his face with the palms of their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, O Christ! who is it that struck thee?"
(St. Mark 14: 53-65) (St. Luke 22: 54-71) (St. John 18: 13-27) This text is basically the same as the previous one for St. Matthew.
(St. Matthew 26:67-68) "Then they spat in his face and buffeted him; while others struck his face with their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?"
(St. Mark 8:31) And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be put to death and after three days rise again.
(St. Mark 14:65) And some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to buffet him, and to say to him, "Prophesy!" And the attendants struck him with blows of their hands.
(St. Luke 9:22) Saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day rise again."
(St. Luke17:25) But first must he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation.
(St. Luke 22:63-65) And the
men who had him in custody began to mocked him and beat him. And they blindfolded
him, and kept striking his face and asking him, "Prophesy, who is
it that struck thee?" And many other things they kept saying
against him revilling him.
The following morning just after daybreak Jesus was tried before the religious Sanhedrin where he was again found guilty of blasphemy, a crime punishable dy death. Following this the crowd then arose and he was led to Pilate.
(St. Matthew 27:1-2) Now when morning came all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel together against Jesus in order to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the procurator.
(St. Mark 15:1) And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests hel a consultation with the elders, the Scribes and the whole Sanhedrin. And they bound Jesus and led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
(St. Luke 22:66-71) And the whole assemblage rose and took him before Pilate.
ROMAN TRIALS
Permission had to be granted from the governing Romans before an execution could take place. Knowing this the temple officals took Jesus to the Praetorium of the Fortress of Antonia, the residence and governmental seat of Pontius Pilate, the procurator of Judea. Jesus was presented to Pilate as a self-appoint king and not as a blasphemer. Pilate filed no charges against Jesus and sent him to Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Judea. Herod likewise made no official charges and returned Jesus to Pilate.
(St. Luke 23: 7-11) And learning that he belonged to Herod's juriscition, he sent him back to Herod, who likewise was in Jerusalem in thos days. Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had been a long time desirous to see him, because he had heard so much about him, and he was hoping to see some miracle done by him. Now he put many questions to him but he made him no answer. Now the chief priests and Scribes were standing by, vehemently accusing him. But Herod, with his soldiery, treated him with contempt and mocked him, arraying him in a bright robe, and sent him back to Pilate.
He appeared before the Roman ruler of Galilee, Herod Antipas, Tuesday morning. Herod took off his clothing and dressed him in a bright ornate robe to mock his claim of kingship. He then returned him to Pilate.
Pilate unable to find a basis for a legal charge against Jesus, presented both Barabbas and Jesus to the people asking which one was to be set free. The Jews allowed Barabbas to be released and demanded that Jesus be crucified, crying out that "His blood be on us and on our children!` Pilate, unable to convince the crowds of Jesus' innocence, ordered Jesus put to death and handed him to the guards to be flogged and crucified.
(St. Matthew 27:11-26) Now Jesus stood before the procurator and the procurator asked him saying, "Aart thou the king of the Jews?" Jesus said to him "Thou sayest it." And when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he made no answer. Then Pilate said to him, "Dost thou not hear how many things they prefer against thee?" But he did not answer him a single word, so that the procurator wondered exceedingly. Now at festival time the procurator used to release to the crowd a prisoner, whomever they would. Now he had at that time a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said, "Whom do you wish that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" For he knew that they had delivered him up out of envy. Now, as he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things in a dream today because of him." But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to destroy Jesus. But the procurator addressed them, and said to them "Which of the two do you wish that I release to you?" And they said "Barabbas." Pilate said to them "What then am I to do with Jesus who is called Christ?" The procurator said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they kept crying out the more, saying. "Let him be crucified!" Now Pilate, seeing that he was doing no good, but rather that a riot was breaking out, took water and washed his hands in sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just man; see to it yourselves." And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children." Then he released to them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to them to be crucified.
(St. Mark 15:2-15) (St. Luke 23:17-25) (St. John 18: 29-40) This text is basically the same as the previous one for St. Matthew.
(St. Luke 23:13-16) And Pilate
called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people and
said to them, "You have brought before me this man, as one who perverts
the people; and behold, I upon examining him in your presence havefound
no guilt in this man as touching these things of which you accuse him.
Neither has Herod; for I sent you back to him and behold, nothing deserving
of death has been committed by him. I will therefore chastise him
and release him."
