Upon on their arrival at Golgotha, Jesus along with the two thieves were stripped of their clothes except for a linen loincloth which they are allowed to wear. Jesus was offered a wine mixed with myrth, a mild analgestic mixture which is offered to those about to be crucified, but this is refused by Jesus.(St. Matthew 27:34-35) Simon was ordered to place the patibulum on the ground and there after Jesus was quickly thrown backwards with his shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire drives the heavy nails deeply into the wood first through one wrist and then the other. |

They lift the patibulum into place, with the titulus nailed above his head which reads "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". With knees flexed, the feet are placed and a nail is driven though them, deeply into the wood again. |
The two thieves, who were executed along with him were placed one on each side with Jesus being in the middle. The soldiers along with the many people who were there taunted Jesus throughout the crucifixion ordeal, and the soldiers cast lots for his clothing. During this ordeal Jesus utter a total of seven phrases, the first time Jesus spoke was while the soldiers were throwing dice for his seamless garment, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they." (St. Mark 15: 24-25) Even one of the criminals, hanging on the cross with him, mocked him, saying "If you are the Christ save yourself and us." The other criminal came to the defense of Jesus saying "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? We indeed justily deserve what we are receiving, but this man has done nothing wrong." He then turned to Jesus and said "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus looked at him and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."(St. Luke 23:32-44) Jesus looking down seeing his grief stricken, mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene and one of his Apostles standing near the cross. He looked first at John and said "Behold they mother" and then looking at his mother he said "Woman, behold thy son." This was to be the third statement he uttered. It was this time on that Mary would reside in the house of John. The fourth time he was to cry out with a loud voice saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" Which means "My God, My God, why have yu forsaken me?"(St. Matthew 27:45-51) Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, that the Scripure could now be fulfilled said "I thirst." Upon hearing this, one who was standing near by immediately ran, took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, putting it on a red offered it to Jesus so he could drink.(St. Matthew 27: 45-51) His six words uttered in a painful whisper were "It is finished." Drawing upon the last of his strength he spoke in a clear loud voice his final words "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit" Upon saying this he bowed his head and took his last breath.(St. Luke 23: 44-46)

(St. Matthew 27:34-35) And they gave him wine to drink mixed with gall; but when he had tasted it, he would not drink. And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, (to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet, They divided my garments among them, and upon my vesture they cast lots) And sitting down, they kept watch over him. And they put above his head the charge against him written, THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
(St. Mark15: 23-26) And they gave him wine to drink mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. Then they crucified him and divided his garments, casting losts for them to see what each should take. Now it was the third hour and they crucified him. And the inscription bearing the charge against him was, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
(St. Luke 23:32-44) Now there were also two others malefactors led to the execution with him. And when they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, and the robbers, one on his right hand and the other on his left. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Now in dividing his garments they cast lots. And the people stood looking on; and the rulers with them kept sneering at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen of God." And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him common wine, and saying, "If thou art the King of the Jews, save thyself!" And there was also an inscription written over him in Greek and Latin, and Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Now one of those robbers who were hanged was abusing him, saying, "If thou art the Christ, save thyself and us!" But the other in answer rebuked him and said, "Dost thou not even fear God, seeing thay thou art under the same sentence? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what our deeds deserved; but this Man has done nothing wrong." And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise." It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
(St. John 19:16-27) Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. And so they took Jesus and led Him away. And bearing the cross for himself he went forth to the place called the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified him, and with two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the center. And Pilate also wrote an inscription and had it put on the cross. And there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OFTHE JEWS. Many of the Jews therefore read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and in Latin. The chief priests of the Jews said tgerefire to Pilate, "Do not write, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews." Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." The soldiers therefore when they had crucified him, took his garments and made of them four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven in one place from the top. They therefore said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, tosee whose it shall be." That the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They divided my garments among them; and for my vesture they cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When "Jesus, therefore, saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold thy son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, thy mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home."
The death of Jesus
(St. Matthew 27:45-51) Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. But about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabacthani," that is, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" And some of the bystanders on hearing this said, "This Man is calling Elias!" And immediately one of them ran and taking a sponge, soaked it in common wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to him to drink. But the rest said, "Wait, let us see whether Elias is coming to save him. But Jesus again cried out with a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent
(St. Mark 15: 33-39) And when the sixth hour came, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, and at the ninth hour Jesus criedout with a loud voice, saying "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?" which, translated is, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" And some of the bystanders on hearing this said, "Behold, he is calling Elias." But someone ran, soaked a sponge in common wine, put it on a reed and offered it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elias is coming to take him down." But, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and expired. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw how he had thus cried out and expired, he said, "Truly this man was the Sond of God."
(St. Luke 23:44-46) It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn in the middle. And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." And having said this, he expired.
(St. John 19:28-30) After this, Jesus, knowing that
all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
said, "I thirst." Now there was standing there a vessel
full of common wine; and having put a sponge soaked with the wine
on a stalk of hyssop, they put it to his mouth. Therefore,
when Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is
consumamated!" And bowing his head, ge gave up
his spirit.
