January 1, 1922. Sunday. We was at home till about 10 o'clock when we went over to Mother's as she is sick and after noon I went to town to meet Nellie Blanch and Hazel. They come from Mr. Cartwright's this morning. Grace and the babies went and stayed at Mr.. Troutman's till we got back.

Jan 2. I went by Tom Compton's and summoned him to Troutman and on to Statesville. Was there all day in court. We was to try the Davidson boys for beating up Charley Hartline, but he was too sick to attend the trial, so it was set for Monday week. James plowed.

Jan 3. I went over to Mother's this morning. Grace went with me. Mother is much better. I plowed this evening. James plowed till noon, and went off this evening.

Jan 4. This morning I went to mill up at Troutman and come back home and taken Vada Putnam, my sister, to Statesville to get to her home in Winston-Salem. I went over to town and struck up with Tom Halliburton. We went up in the Rocky Creek section and cut up two stills, one near the home of Walter Williams and the other one well up the creek.

Jan 5. I went back up in the Rocky Creek section and searched some houses, and one boiler weight about 200 pounds. We brought it to town. There was Mr. Halliburton and Hoke and Lazenby and Tilley was along. It was 4 o'clock when we got to town.

Jan 6. This morning I am not feeling well and have been at home all day. Mr. Dingler come down and I went with him on yon side of the creek.

Jan 7. I am sick most all day and have been in bed most all day.

Jan 8. Sunday. I have been sick and in bed most all day.

Jan 9. I am still on the sick list and have been at home and in bed a part of the day.

Jan 10. I am still on the sick list and at home till noon. I went up to Troutman to see Dr. Talley and paid him what I owed him.

Jan 11. I have been at home most all day only I went to see Mother a little bit as she is sick, and I am better.

Jan 12. I have been around the house as I am not well and are attending to the baby as Grace is washing, and this evening I taken the drill over to Mother's. James cut some wood.

Jan 13. I his morning we have two loads of leaves for the cow stables, and this evening we hauled some wood to the colored schoolhouse.

Jan 14. This morning I went over to F. K. Ostwalt's and settled with him in full. He owed me $367.39. Then I went on to Statesville, and it was about night when I got home.

Jan 15. Sunday. Stayed at home till noon, and this evening we went to preaching at Rocky Mount, all but Grace and Clyde. Clyde is sick. I come by Mother's and she come home with us.

Jan 16. I went to Statesville to the Farm Bureau Meeting to elect officers for the year 1922. James Summers taken a load of lumber to town.

Jan 17. I worked cleaning off a mill yard. Bub Patterson and Millard Bailey helped me. James taken a load of lumber to Statesville.

Jan 18. I worked cleaning off a mill yard till noon, and after noon we hauled some logs we had made rollways out of and cut some logs for 4 x 6 x 20 feet to roll the old house away on. James Summers, Bub Patterson, Millard Bailey worked for me.

Jan 19. This morning we fixed up to saw, but it rained and I come back to the house. Carrie Collins come over here and stayed all day. Conway come along, but he did not stay long.

Jan 20. I went to Mrs. Barby Kennedy's burying. She lived in Statesville and was buried at Doolie. After the burying was over, I went by Mooresville and on home. I bro9ken a hub out of my car at Dave Neil's and left it there all night.

Jan 21. This morning I went up to Homer's and he taken me to Troutman, and I got a hub for one of my car wheels and went and brought it home, and this evening I went over to Fed Nesbitt's to see Mother and to get the shoe last.

Jan 22. Sunday. We stayed at home all day as the roads have been awfully bad.

Jan 23. This morning I went to mill, the City Flour Mill in Statesville, and after noon I went over in the woods where the boys was cutting logs, and then on to Troutman and got two bags of cottonseed meal.

Jan 24. Sawed at the mill. James fired, Bailey turned logs and Patterson turned logs.

Jan 25. Sawed at the mill till a while after noon, and got done and the rest of the evening we worked getting ready to move the mill.

Jan 26. Moved the saw mill today. Conway, Homer, and Lawton Hinson helped me till noon, and James and I hauled some stuff this evening.

Jan 27. I dug snow off the road between home and the big road and shoveled snow and have been around the house all day.

Jan 28. This morning the snow is 8 inches deep and I hunted some. This morning Conway and Homer was here, and this evening I have been at home.

Jan 29. Sunday. We went up to Mr. Troutman's and spent the day and was about night when we come home.

Jan 30. I went to court in Statesville and was there all day. S. D. Dingler went along and I picked up J. H. Lipe.

Jan 31.I went to court and was there all day.

February 1, 1922. I have been at home all day and worked some on the house.

Feb 2. I went to court and was there all day. Grace and the little boys went along and spent the day at Clifton Troutman's.

Feb 3. I went to court and was there till noon when court ended for the week, and I come home and sharpened a saw this evening.

Feb 4. This morning I hauled a load of ties to Troutman for Conway and Homer, and this evening I went to town. Grace and the children went with me.

Feb 5. Sunday. We stayed at home all day as it has been cloudy and rained all day.

Feb 6. I went to court and was there all day. After noon I arrested P. A. Sherrill for a felony, and he had to go to jail in default of bond--$12.00.

Feb 7. I went to court and was there all day.

Feb 8. I killed a hog this morning, and this evening I worked putting down my sawmill. James and Rob Vanderburg helped me.

Feb 9. I have been setting down my sawmill. Rob Vanderburg and James Summers helped me. We made 9 hours.

Feb 10. Worked at the mill all day placing the engine, made a dam, and covered up the belt. Rob Vanderburg and James Summers helped me.

Feb 11. This morning I hauled two loads of pine leaves for the stables. James Summers helped me. Rob Vanderburg put up some wood, and after noon I went to Statesville. James and Rob went with me. I paid James $2.00 and Rob $3.00 in cash. I also attended P. A. Sherrill's trial, or the part they had. They did not get through with it.

Feb 12. Sunday. We stayed at home all day. The roads was so bad we could not go to church. This evening Conway and Homer Collins come over and Roy Parker and Bell was here this afternoon

Feb 13. This morning we went to the mill and laid some floors. Got ready to saw, but it looked so much like rain we hauled some logs and after noon we tore the chimney down from the old house. Rob Vanderburg and James Summers helped me. We made 9 hours.

Feb 14. I was at home will noon, only I went over to Conway's to get him to cut my hair, and this evening I went to town to take James Summers and his intended wife to get a license, and it was about night when I got home.

Feb 15. We started up to Mr. Troutman 's to spend the day, and we got some sticks in the steering rods and bent them, so I had to go up to Troutman and get Nay Sherrill to come and help me fix it. Grace and the boy come back up to Mr. Jones and stayed till I got back.

Feb 16. I have been at home all day. Helped Grace about her washing this morning.

Feb 17. I taken Grace, Baby and Mother to the train to go to Winston to G. C. Putnam's and was in town the rest of the day.

Feb 18. I hauled some wood and put it on the porch and some stove wood from the mill. This evening I went to town. Nellie Blanch and Hazel went with me.

Feb 19. Sunday. I went to town this morning about 10 o'clock to meet Grace and Clyde as they are coming home. This evening I stayed at C. A. Kyles till time for the train. Nellie Blanch and Hazel was with me, and we come by Mr. Troutman's and got Flossie and Ernest, and it was about night when we got home.

Feb 20.orked at the mill all day and got ready and sawed some. Rob helped me.

Feb 21.his morning I helped Mr. Lem Brown about moving the old house. I had Bob and Millard cleaning off a place for it. James sawed logs and Stamey Mills hauled logs all day. This evening I made a dump track and we sawed some.

Feb 22. Sawed at the mill most all day. James fired, Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed, and Bub Patterson turned logs. Stamey Mills hauled logs and Millard Bailey drug logs to yard.

Feb 23. Sawed at the mill and stacked lumber. James fired, Bub turned logs, Millard offbarrowed, and Stamey Mills hauled logs, and Rob Vanderburg drug to gangway.

Feb 24. This morning I went to town and got some saw teeth and got back by 8:30 o'clock and sawed at the mill the rest of the day. James fired, Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed, Bub Patterson turned logs, and Stamey Mills hauled and Millard Bailey drug to gangway.

Feb 25. Sawed at the mill till noon. Stamey Mills hauled logs and Millard Bailey drug to gangway, James fired, Rob offbarrowed, and Bub Patterson turned logs, and I sawed. After noon I went to town and to mill and got a flue for the boiler and flue expander.

Feb 26. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School this morning, and after noon we went up to Mr. Troutman's, and it was about night when we got home.

Feb 27. This morning we put a flue in the boiler and filled up the boiler, and I went to town to take Grace up to Clate Kyle's as Dillie is sick and going to hospital to have an operation. James and Hamp stacked lumber and hauled logs till it rained. Made 7 hours.

Feb 28. This morning James and Rob hauled logs, and after noon we sawed and Stamey Mills and Millard Bailey hauled logs. I taken Flossie Troutman to town to see Dillie as she is at the hospital.

March 1, 1922. This morning it is raining and I have been at home or over at Lonnie Ervin's. Went over there to have a horse shod. Stayed till after noon.

Mar 2. This morning I went up to J. A. Jones and settled with him. He owed me $29.45. After noon I had some papers to serve, and I went over to J. H. Troutman's place and arrested John Grier and taken him to town and served a summons on Ernest Troutman.

Mar 3. This morning I worked on the house, putting the molding and ...........up, and this evening I hauled some stove wood. Tonight I went over to East Monbo to watch for a liquor car. Halliburton and Hoke was with me, but it never come.

Mar 4. I have been around home all day. only I went to [the store] late this evening.

Mar 5. Sunday. We all went to preaching at Rocky Mount, and this evening we have been at home.

Mar 6. Sawed at the mill all day. Made 8 1/2 hours at the mill. James fired, Rob offbarrowed, and Bub turned logs. Millard Bailey hauled logs all day and Stamey Mills this evening.

Mar 7. This morning James and Rob stacked some lumber. This morning I worked two hours and then I went to town. Grace and Clyde went with me to see Dillie as she is at Casper Dans (?) Hospital. I paid the J. H. Troutman estate the balance due on sawmill $113.97.

Mar 8. Sawed at the mill all day, and we also stacked the lumber. James fired, Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed and Bub Patterson turned logs. Stamey Mills hauled logs and Millard drug to the gangway.

Mar 9. Cut logs all day. Rob Vanderburg, Bub Patterson and I, James and Millard Bailey hauled logs.

Mar 10. This morning it is raining, and I have been at home till noon and this evening I taken Rob Vanderburg to town and also one of Alec Young's gals to be examined. They got their marriage license. A. B. Parker went with me.

Mar 11. This morning I went to Troutman . James taken a load of cotton, or a bale, belonging to Will Mincey, to Ostwalt, and I taken the teacher to the train. This evening I have been around home.

Mar 12. Sunday. We all went to preaching at Rocky Mount this morning, and this evening we went up to Mr. David Overcash's and stayed a while.

Mar 13. This morning I drug the road, and this evening I went and summoned some witnesses and went on to Statesville. Grace and Clyde went with me.

Mar 14. Sawed at the mill all day. James Summers fired and Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed, Bub Patterson turned logs, and Stamey Mills hauled logs. We made 8 1/2 hours.

Mar 15. This morning we stacked lumber two hours. Rob, James, and Bub and I worked on the engine as the crank shaft was broken, and we did not work any more. I went to town to see if I could get one and found I would have to go to Salisbury to get one.

Mar 16. I went to Salisbury to get a crank shaft for my engine. Got back about two o'clock and got up some wrenches to take it apart. James Summers and Rob Vanderburg hauled some leaves for the stables and some stove wood to the house and some brick out of the yard.

Mar 17. This morning I worked taking the engine crank out. The new one was too large, and I taken it and started to Salisbury, but when I got to Statesville I found the man from Salisbury and he taken the mandle back and was to phone me if he had one in stock like the one I wanted. James and Rob Vanderburg helped me this morning.

Mar 18. This morning I went to Salisbury to get a crank shaft for my engine as the other one was too large. Got back to town about 11:30 o'clock and was there most of the evening.

Mar 19. Sunday. We stayed at home all day.

Mar 20. This morning James and I worked putting the crank shaft in the engine, and this evening I went to Troutman and worked on my car bushing and to get a drill to drill a ...................and Rob cut cord wood.

Mar 21. I drilled a bolt out of the engine, and then went and summoned for W. D. Troutman and attended church conference at Troutman and then come on home.

Mar 22. I worked in the yard plowing off the high places and filling in the low ones.

Mar 23. This morning I went to the J. H. Troutman place to get Johnny Grier, but found him sick and did not take him. Went on to town as Grace wanted to see Dillie as she is sick, and I got the part for my engine and was about night when we got home.

Mar 24. This morning I went to Troutman to the Post Office to get some set screws for my engine and then worked putting it together. Rob helped me and after noon I sowed some clover seed, and James fired up and then we all worked putting the engine in running shape.

Mar 25. I worked at the mill this morning putting up some dump track and doing some other work. James helped me. We worked four hours, and this evening I went to town and got a ..........for the mill, some oil and cup grease.

Mar 26. Sunday. We all went to Fed Nesbitt's, or Grace and the boys and Nellie Blanch. Hazel stayed with Anna Ervin all day.

Mar 28. Worked at the mill. Started to saw at eleven and sawed the rest of the day. We made six hours.

Mar 29. Sawed at the mill. James, Rob and Bub helped me, and we got along very well.

Mar 30. Sawed 2 1/2 hours and it rained and we stopped, and I went and arrested W. P. Cavin and taken him to town.

Mar 31. Sawed 3 1/2 hours this morning, and this evening it rained and I have been at home. I fixed up the log wagon after noon and this evening I went over to Mother's after Mother and Levada and brought them home.

April 1, 1922. Stacked lumber a while this morning, and after noon I went to town and got some oil.

Apr 2. Sunday. We went over to Mother's this morning as George Putnam and family was over from Winston, and then late we went up to Mr.. Troutman's.

Apr 3. I have been sick. Have been around home. James and Rob Vanderburg hauled logs.

Apr 4. Sawed at the mill a part of the day. I stopped and went to Mrs. Katie Jones' burying at 3 o'clock. She died with flu pneumonia. The boy hauled logs and stacked lumber till I come back.

Apr 5. Sawed at the mill all day. We made 8 1/2 hours. James fired, Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed, and Bub Patterson turned logs.

Apr 6. This morning it is raining and rained most all day. I have been at home most all day, only I was over at Carrie Collins' a while about noon. Grace and Clyde spent the day over at Tom Ervin's.

Apr 7. I went to Troutman after a load of fertilizer, and this evening taken some lumber over to Lydie Ervin's stop to make some frames for screen doors and windows.

Apr 8. I hauled logs all day, some large white oak ones for porch floors. Conway helped me. James Summers also helped me.

Apr 9. Sunday. We stayed at home all day, only I went over to Mother's a little while.

Apr 10. Sawed all day at the mill. James fired, Rob Vanderburg offbarrowed, and Bub Patterson turned logs.

Apr 11. Sawed at the mill till eleven o'clock, and we got the yard clean. This evening Rob and James hauled logs 4 hours. I had company till late. Mrs. Cartwright, Ernest and Blaine was here. After they left I went to serve a summons on L. W. Westmoreland.

Apr 12. This morning I went over to the woods and worked getting out logs, and then come back and worked in the shop till noon fixing a log chain, and this evening I went over to Monbo to serve some witness summons. James Summers and Rob Vanderburg hauled logs all day.

Apr 13. This morning I went over to Lydie Ervin's and from there on to Troutman to a trial, and got back home at noon. Went to town this evening and got some screen wire for doors and windows. James Summer and Rob Vanderburg hauled logs all day.

Apr 14. This morning I planted some potatoes and done some garden work. Rob helped me all day and James commenced work at 9 o'clock. After noon Rob and James hauled logs, and I worked in the garden.

Apr 15. This morning I taken a cart to Mr. Lum Brown that I had borrowed, and after noon we all went to town.

Apr 16. Sunday. We all went up to Mr. Cartwright's and spent the day.

Apr 17. This morning I went and served a claim and delivery for Will H.......off Bub Westmoreland for putting.................and helping them for a certain price. Come back home and harrowed some landtill late this evening I went and served a warrant on V. T. Malcom and L. T. Harrington for opening up a road and traveling some.

Apr 18. Plowed all day. James Summers helped me all day and Bub Patterson helped me a while this evening. We plowed in the cotton land.

Apr 19. This morning I went over to Lydie Ervin's shop to make some frames for window screens and doors for our house.

Apr 20. I went over to J. L. Ervin's shop and worked on my screen windows and doors. James stacked lumber, and this evening we killed a hog. Started to haul out manure and I went and served a warrant on Luther Harrington and V. L. Malcom.

Apr 21. Hauled out manure all day, or till 3:30 and got done. James Summers and Bub Patterson helped me.

Apr 22. I worked putting up some screen doors and windows till late this evening. Then I went to Troutman to the corn mill.

Apr 23. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School this morning and was at home till late this evening. Then we went over to Mother's a while.

Apr 24. Plowed in the cotton land around the house all day. James Summers helped me.

Apr 25. Plowed in the cotton land all day. James helped me.

Apr 26. Plowed all day. Got done with mine till noon and started on James' this evening.

Apr 27. Plowed for James till about 5 o'clock and it rained, and we come home.

Apr 28. I have been at home all day, only I went up to Troutman to take Homer to get some tools to work on his car. I worked on some screens for the house.

Apr 29. This morning I hauled some needles for the stables, and this evening I went to town. Grace and the boy went with me and Nellie Blanch and Hazel went to Mother's.

Apr 30. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School, and after noon we all went over to Uncle Bill Nesbitt's.

May 1, 1922. Plowed for James all day in his cotton land.

May 2. Plowed for James till noon, and this evening we planted cottonseed for me. It was the first I had planted this year.

May 3. I taken a hog up to Mr..J. C. Troutman's and have been about home the rest of the day.

May 4. I have been at home all day. Worked on the screen doors and windows all day and got them all in.

May 5. This morning I worked on a pasture fence and at 10 o'clock I went with the School Board to see about the negro schoolhouse in Davidson Township, and this evening I went to work on the fence, but it rained and we had to come to the house.

May 6. This morning I went to Mooresville and got four bags of flour for $16.50, and this evening we went to East Monbo ball game and stayed for the school closing.

May 7. Sunday. We all went to preaching and was at home till late this evening we went up to Mr. Troutman's a while.

May 8. This morning I went by Troutman and come on to East Monbo and arrested Edward G......and brought him to Troutman and had his trial and went on to Statesville and swore out a warrant for Amos Stafford and Rob Roberson for having liquor and went to Mooresville to arrest them, but failed to find them, and it was about night when I got home.]

May 9. Planted cottonseed all day for myself. James Summers helped me and I got done.

May 10. Planted cottonseed for James all day.

May 11. Planted cottonseed for James till noon and got done. Went back up there and drug out some patches. Then went to plow for me, but it come up a cloud and rained awfully hard on till night.

May 12. This morning I cleaned off some for the pasture fence and then cleaned on the creek bank till noon, and after noon I went over to Mother's and put a yoke on a calf and come back home. Mr. and Mrs.. Barron come and spent the evening with us.

May 13. Worked on he wire fence till noon, and James Summers helped me. After noon I went to Statesville and taken the girls to go to Mr. Cartwright's. They met them in town. Grace and the other children went along.

May 14. We stayed at home all day as I was sick.

May 15. This morning I went to town as I am concerned in a trial, and it was late when I got home. I plowed a little in the bottoms this evening, and James plowed all day in the newground with the one-horse plow.

May 16. This morning I worked about the house, and this evening I worked on fencing up some clover for the horses.

May 18. I went to court in town and was there all day. Grace and the boys went up to Mr. Troutman's and spent the day and are there tonight. I am at home.

May 19. I went back to court and was there till five o'clock . I went to serve some witnesses at Troutman and come on home and went to East Monbo to serve some tonight. Grace and the baby went with me as there was no one to stay with them.

May 20. This morning I went to Amity Hill to serve a summons on C. R. Goodman and on to town and was there till 3 o'clock and come out to East Monbo to a ball game and got home a while before night.

May 21. Sunday. Was at home till noon and after noon I went to preaching at Rocky Mt. Grace and Clyde stayed at home as Grace had the sick headache.

May 22. I went to court this morning to a trial and I got through and come home till 2 o'clock. Nellie Blanch and Hazel come to town from Mr. Cartwright's and I brought them home and plowed the rest of the day. James weeded cotton 4 hours for me and then the rest of the day for himself.

May 23. I planted some corn this morning and a while after noon and then cultivated cotton the rest of the day and the children started to help some. James plowed in the bottoms all day.

May 24. I plowed cotton all day and the children thinned. James plowed in the bottoms all day breaking them up.

May 25. I plowed cotton most all day. James plowed in the bottoms with the two-horse plow.

May 26. I plowed cotton a while this morning and then went and helped Conway put a tongue in the mowing machine and after noon I mowed clover a while and it looked like rain and I then plowed cotton till night. James plowed in the bottoms and plowed in his cotton this evening.

May 27. I plowed cotton till noon and this evening I went to town and taken the girls and left them with Mrs. Bradford.

May 28. Sunday. We went to Sunday School this morning and we have been at home this evening.

May 29. I cut some oats and then mowed some clover and this evening I put up some oats hay and harrowed some cotton.

May 30. I plowed cotton till about 11 o'clock and I then shocked up some clover hay and then plowed till 4 this evening and then put up two loads of hay.

May 31. I laid off corn rows in the bottoms till noon and after noon I went and helped fix up some fence and come back and went to rake and put up some clover hay, but it rained some and got it wet and we stopped.

June 1, 1922. Planted corn till late this evening in the bottom, and then I plowed some patches with the two-horse plow. James helped me till noon, and this evening I plowed in his cotton.

Jun 2. I went to town this morning and have been around the house, and went up to the store late this evening.

Jun 3. I went up to Troutman to the Primary and was there all day, only I went over to East Monbo to the ball game.

Jun 4. Sunday. We all went to preaching and went from there to Mother's and give her a surprise birthday dinner, and it was about night when we got home. We done up our work and went up to Mr. Troutman's.

Jun 5. I worked on wire fence till in the evening and then I raked and hauled up a load of clover hay.

Jun 6. This morning I cut some with the disk harrow, and then cut a piece of oats, and this evening I hauled them, and two loads of clover hay. James Summers helped me.

Jun 7. This morning I went and arrested Johnny Guire and taken him to town and put him in jail, and this evening I plowed and fixed a sweet potato patch and plowed the watermelon patch, and then plowed cotton. James plowed for himself.

Jun 8. I went and got the reaper and we cut wheat after we got the reaper fixed up till about five o'clock. A cloud come up but didn't rain much here, but did rain here tonight. James Summers helped me.

Jun 9. Cut wheat all day. James helped me.

Jun 10. Cut wheat all day. We cut till about 8 o'clock this evening. James helped me and Grace and the children.

Jun 11. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School and come by home and went up to J. C. Troutman's. We all met there and give Mrs. Troutman a birthday dinner and spent the evening.

Jun 12. Cut wheat till noon and got done, and after noon I went over the creek and cut rye awhile till we broke the pull chain on the reaper and then we stopped and come to the house. I went to town to get some chain links, but they didn't have any.

Jun 13. I cut some oats this morning with the cradle. James Summers helped me, and this evening I tied and shocked them up. Grace and Hazel helped me. James planted some corn for himself.

Jun 14. I plowed cotton till noon, and this evening we hauled up wheat. James and Grace and the children helped me.

Jun15. I hauled two loads of wheat this morning and then I taken a fifthtree I had borrowed up to Morrison Troutman's, and this evening I plowed corn.

Jun 16. Plowed corn till noon, and this evening I plowed in the cotton, and the children hoed cotton. James plowed in his cotton.

Jun 17. I plowed cotton till noon. This evening I went to town, and James plowed in his cotton most all day.

Jun 18. Sunday. We all went over to Mother's a while this morning, and this evening Grace and the girls went to preaching, and I stayed home and kept the boys as the baby is not well.

Jun 19. I plowed corn till noon, and this evening I plowed in the cotton. The children hoed corn this morning, and this evening they hoed cotton.

Jun 20. I plowed cotton all day, and the children hoed cotton. James plowed in his cotton.

Jun 21. This morning I went to Mooresville, paid my farm loan $56 and attended a picture show of the boll weevil and then come on up to Fred Lipe's and arrested Nels Redman and taken him to town up in North Iredell and brought him back and put him in jail.

Jun 22. I plowed cotton till in the evening and got over it, and plowed out the sweet potato patch and watermelon patch.

Jun 24. I plowed corn till noon, and this evening I went to town, and it was night when we got home. I got James a dishpan, give $1.50.

Jun 25. Sunday. We went to Sunday School, and this evening we went up to Mr. Troutman's, Grace's father.

Jun 26. I plowed in the bottom till noon, and James helped me all day. This evening I hauled up a load of slabs, and then went to Troutman and had some wagon tires shrunk.

Jun 27. I taken a load of timber to town, and we got back about 2 o'clock. I loaded up the wagon for tomorrow.

Jun 28. I went to town with a load of lumber and got back till noon, and after noon I hauled up a load of oats, and then I went to Mooresville to see about some lumber, and got a bag of sugar.

Jun 29. I went to Mooresville to see about selling some lumber, and come back by Will Simms, and paid him $23.58 on a note.

Jun 30. I went to Statesville and was gone most all day. James hauled slabs to the house all day and him a load.

July 1, 1922. I went to see about the thrashers and come back home and was here till noon. James plowed corn till 11 o'clock, and this evening we helped Arthur Simms thrash wheat.

Jul 2. I helped Conway all day to thrash wheat, and James also helped.

Jun 3. Sunday. We all went to preaching, and this evening we went to Mr. Troutman's awhile.

Jul 4. Plowed cotton till about three o'clock. It started to rain and I went to mill.

Jul 5. I plowed with the two-horse plow this morning, and this evening James plowed and I helped Dave Overcash thrash wheat.

Jul 6. I hauled up a load of rye, and got ready to thrash wheat, and the thrashers got here at 10 o'clock, and I made 75 bushels of wheat, 15 bushels of oats, and 5 bushels of rye. We got done about 4 o'clock.

Jul 7. I plowed cotton till noon, and a little while after noon. James plowed in the stubble all day, and I plowed cotton.

Jul 8. I plowed cotton till noon, and James plowed in the stubble, and we got done, and I went to town late this evening. Also taken some wheat and corn to mill for James.

Jul 9. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School and over to Mother's this evening.

Jul 10. I went to Mooresville in the car and got three bags of guano, and after noon James and I plowed some peas, about four acres.

Jul 11. Plowed corn in the bottom till a while after noon. Then we all went up to Troutman to get some apples.

Jul 13. Plowed corn awhile this morning and got done in the bottoms, and this evening it rained, and after the rain I went to Troutman and summoned some witnesses.

Jul 14. I plowed up the yard and sowed some in peas, and then made a round on the road and throwed out the rocks, and this evening I went to town.

Jul 15. This morning I went to Troutman and worked on my car all day. I went to town and collected some tax from a negro, John Norris, for selling cigars. I met the train at Troutman. Clifton Troutman and family come and spent the night with us.

Jul 16. Sunday. We all went to Rocky Mount to a Children's Day and was there till late in the evening. Come home, and I taken Clifton Troutman and family to Statesville and come back home.

Jul 17. I sowed some peas for James to plow in, and then we all went to Troutman to take the fever vaccine, and after noon I went to Statesville to get some repair for sawmill.

Jul 18. Plowed cotton till noon. James helped me, and this evening we went to help Peter Vanderburg thrash wheat, and I was in bed most of the evening, sick from being vaccinated.

Jul 19. This morning it is raining, but stopped, and I commenced plowing cotton at 10 o'clock and plowed the rest of the day. James helped this evening.

Jul 20. We all went to Statesville to a picnic and was there all day. James plowed cotton and corn for me.

Jul 21. Plowed corn in the bottoms all day. James helped.

Jul 22. This morning I hauled a load of lumber to Troutman to Z. B. Brown and Murdock, and this evening I taken Nellie Blanche and Hazel to go up to Mr. Cartwright's, and have been at and around Troutman.

Jul 23. Sunday. We went to Sunday School this morning, and after noon went up to Mr. Troutman's.

Jul 24. Hauled lumber to the lumber plant. Made two loads.

Jul 25. I hauled a load of lumber to Troutman this morning a nd I was kindly sick, and I went and served a summons on Max Bass.

Jul 26. I hauled a load of lumber to Troutman this morning. This evening I fixed up some and sawed at the mill. James fired, Homer offbarrowed, and I sawed and turned logs.

Aug 8. I went to court and was there all day and had to stay with the jury till about 9 o'clock, and then I come home.

Aug 9. I went to a reunion, all of us, the Parker reunion. James plowed peas.

Aug 10. This morning I dug some potatoes, and this evening I went to court and was there till about 6 o'clock. James plowed his corn.

Aug 11. I went and helped clean off the graveyard at Rocky Mount, and after noon I went to town. James hauled a load of slabs to town.

Aug 12. This morning I went over to Mother's and got the mowing machine and fixed it up, and this evening I mowed some clover.

Aug 13. Sunday. We all went to Rock Springs to camp meeting and got home a while before night.

Aug 14. Sawed at the mill. We made 8 hours. James fired, and George Summers and Millard Peary offbarrowed, and Will Summers turned logs.

Aug 15. This morning we went to the mill to saw, but it was cloudy and raining some, so I went to preaching, and this evening I went to Troutman.

Aug 16. We all went to preaching at Rocky Mount, and Rev. J. O. Ervin and Fortenberry come home with us and ate dinner. This evening James Summers and Millard Peary hauled logs.

Aug 17. Sawed at the mill all day. James fired, George and Millard offbarrowed, and Will turned logs, and we got the yard done.

Aug 18. I went to the Reunion--all of the family went along--the Troutman Reunion. James and Millard stacked some lumber and then raked some hay and put it up.

Aug 19. We all went to preaching at Rocky Mount, and this evening I went to Troutman and got $20 on lumber from Z. B. Brown and paid off my hands. I went back to church tonight.

Aug 20. Sunday. We all went to church this morning, and went this evening. The meeting closed tonight.

Aug 21. This morning I went over to Lydie Ervin's shop and on to A. S. McKay to see him about some money he owed us, or F. K. Ostwalt, on lumber, and this evening after I got my car fixed I went on to Troutman, and on to serve a summons on L. W. Westmoreland, and back home.

Aug 22. I hauled out some lumber on the road, so the truck could get to it. I sold some to the Mooresville Cotton Mill Co. Rob Vanderburg helped me 6 1/2 hours.

Aug 23. This morning I went to town and got a lot of names of who haven't paid the dog tax, and I came back to Troutman, and I served a warrant for everyone who hadn't paid, and this evening started out to collect some.

Aug 24. I went back on the day job this morning. I was out all day arresting for not paying the dog tax.

Aug 25. I hauled out some lumber part of the day and went after Ernest late this evening at Mrs. J. C. Troutman's

Aug 26. We hauled out some lumber this morning, and this evening I went to town, and James and Leonard hauled some logs.

Aug 27. Sunday. We went to camp meeting. Grace and the boys stayed at Mr. Troutman's, and he, Burette, and Flossie went with us to camp meeting.

Aug 28. Sawed at the mill till noon, and this evening I went to Troutman, and James and Leonard Peary hauled logs.

Aug 29. I done some work at the mill, and then went to Mooresville to see the Mooresville Cotton Mill about some lumber, and they paid me $368.68 for what lumber I had sold them or delivered, and sold them two stacks and I am to haul it out tomorrow. James and Leonard hauled some logs today.

Aug 30. I hauled out lumber all day for the Mooresville Cotton Mill Company. James helped me.

Aug 31. I hauled out lumber this morning. Leonard Peary and George Summers helped me, and this evening I fixed up some wire for more pasture. George Summers helped, and James Summers and Leonard hauled some. They cut and hauled under contract for me.

September 1, 1922. Sawed at the mill all day. We made 8 hours. James fired, Leonard turned logs, and Othar Sherrill offbarrowed.

Sep 2. Sawed till noon, and this evening I went to town. Grace and the baby went with me.

Sep 3. Sunday. Went to preaching this morning, and went home with Ephraim Ervin and spent the evening with them.

Sep 4. Sawed at the mill. We started at 9 o'clock and lost a set screw at 3 o'clock, and I went to town and got one, and James and Rob hauled some logs till 4 o'clock.

Sep 5. Sawed till noon and got done, and this evening Leonard and James stacked lumber, and I done some work around the house, and fixed up the wood wagon. Lois Ervin Waugh died this morning with childbirth, just a young girl.

Sep 6. I hauled Rev. Fortenberry a load of wood, and this evening I went to Lois Waugh's burying at Rocky Mount, 3 o'clock, and as we got back to Bell's Crossroads, we heard that Carrie Collins had died suddenly at Long's Sanitorium. It was sure a shock to us, and Conway and I went on to town to make arrangements for the funeral, and it was about 11 o'clock when hearse got down, and also stayed all night with them.

Sep 7. We all come home from Carrie's and done up our work, and I went back over there and come back home for dinner, and we all went back, and went to the burying at 3 o'clock and come on home.

Sep 8. I sowed a turnip patch, and then taken a buggy up to Troutman to have it fixed, and then went on to Monbo and arrested Alfonzo Chalman, and he secured $500 bond. It was about night when I got home.

Sep 9. This morning I went to Mooresville to settle with the cotton mill company for some lumber, and they give me a check for $303.26 for lumber I sold them, and I come back by Conway's, as he was with me, and we went to Statesville this evening.

Sep 10. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School this morning, and after noon we all went over to Lottie Ervin's awhile.

Sep 11. This morning I taken the children to Troutman to school, and this evening I went to Statesville to get some books, and it was about night when I got home. I hauled wood to town, and taken it to J. D. Kyles. Grace went up home today to can some beans.

Sep 12. I hauled a load of cord wood to town. I taken it to John D. Kyles, and ate dinner with him, and it was about night when I got home.

Sep 14. This morning I went with Conway to town. Grace went too. We went to swear to Carrie's handwriting, as she wrote her own will and was not witnessed, and this evening I cut logs, and James helped me.

Sep 15. Cut logs this morning, and after noon we drug them to the mill. James Summers helped me, and we got done till 3 o'clock, and then we got up some cotton.

Sep 16. Sawed at the mill this morning, and this evening I got Homer's car and went to town, and I bought a rolltop desk from Mrs. W. Kate White.

Sep 17. Sunday. We all was at home this morning, and this evening we all went to preaching at Rocky Mount.

Sep 18. I cut some logs and sawed them at the mill, some pieces for East Monbo. James helped me, and this evening I went after some lumber I had over at J. L. Ervin's for wagon bed, and then picked cotton the rest of the evening.

Sep 19. I hauled a load of wood to John D. Kyles in Statesville, and while up there I helped him put a top on my car, as he is overhauling it, and it was about night when I got home.

Sep 20. I went to Mooresville with Jim Burches (?) and others, and we was met there by four drivers with cars, and we canvassed Davidson Township for the Farm Bureau and got some members.

Sep 21. I taken a bale of cotton to the gin at Troutman. I had it ginned and turned it over to the Cotton Association, and borrow $150 on it at the bank, and have been about home this evening.

Sep 22. Cut up some corn till noon and pulled fodder in the bottoms this evening., James helped me.

Sep 23. Pulled fodder awhile this morning, and then I fixed some fence where the cows had been crossing the creek. James Summers helped me, and we worked about 3 hours, and this evening I went to Statesville and got my car, as John D. Kyles had been fixing it up for me.

Sep 24. I taken the children and went up to Mr. Cartwright's as he is sick, and Grace and Clyde stayed at Troutman.

Sep 25. Pulled fodder and cut tops all day in the bottoms. James helped me.

Sep 26. I went with Grace up home and helped can some corn and pears, and we come home after noon, and we all picked cotton.

Sep 27. This morning I tied up some fodder in the bottoms, and then I helped Grace wash, and after noon I went to Troutman and collected $151.17 for lumber, and paid a note of $100 at the Troutman Bank and Trust Co., and deposited $5017.

Sep 28. Pulled fodder and cut tops all day. James Summers helped me, and we got along fine.

Sep 29. I hauled some lumber to Troutman to the cotton mill company to be shipped for crates to ship the machinery in. L. O. Ervin hauled two loads this morning for me.

Sep 30. I hauled a load of lumber to Troutman to the Hall and Kale Mfg. Co., and this evening I went to Statesville and paid a note at the First National Bank for lightning rods.

October 1 1922. Sunday. We went to preaching at Rocky Mount, come home, and after dinner we went back to the church to a burying, Mr. Earl Rodgers. He was an old man.

Oct 2. I tied up some fodder in the bottoms, and then hauled up a load of corn, some I had cut up, then James taken off a bale of cotton, and I taken up some peanuts and picked some cotton.

Oct 3. This morning I put up some fodder and loaded some cotton, and then I went to Troutman and paid J. L. Smith $42.70 for fertilizer, and this evening I picked cotton.

Oct 4. I worked about the house and hauled up some cotton and loaded some and went to the gin about 10 o'clock. It was late when I got back.

Oct 5. I went to Statesville, taken Grace and Annis Ervin, and we got back till noon, and I taken a load of lumber to Troutman to get it dressed for my porch flooring.

Oct 6. I hauled lumber to the planers at Troutman. I have to have it dressed for my porch flooring.

Oct 7. This morning I sharpened some handsaws and planes, and then worked on the house. Conway helped me awhile. The creek was out in the bottoms last night.

Oct 8. We all went up to Mr. J. W. Cartwright's to see Mr. Cartwright as he is sick, and left there about four o'clock. Come by Mr. Troutman's, Grace's father, and it was about night when we got home.

Oct 9. This morning I worked taking up peanuts, and it taken us nearly all day. James Summer helped me. Grace helped too. We made 8 hours.

Oct 10. I built a hog pen, worked at it all day. James Summers helped me,

Oct 11. This morning I went up to Bell's Crossroads, and went from there on to Statesville with Homer Collins, and we got back about 10 o'clock, and I worked on the house all the rest of the day. James Summers hauled wood to Troutman, two cords to Dixie C..........and one to Herman Brown.

Oct 12. I worked on the porch all day, taken the ... off and part of the weatherboarding, changing them. James hauled a load of wood to Herman Brown, and then plowed this evening.

Oct 13. I worked on one of the porches, and this evening I picked some cotton and started to lay some porch flooring, and James Summers plowed for me.

Oct 14. This morning I went to get some rye. James went to Mother's and got the drill, and we drilled some rye and got done till 2 o'clock, and I went up to Troutman and on to East Monbo.

Oct 15. Sunday. We come home this morning from Mr. J. C. Troutman's and done up our work, and this evening we went to preaching at Rocky Mount.

Oct 16. I went to Statesville to attend Federal Court and was there all day. Grace and the baby went with me.

Oct 17. I went back to U. S. Court in Statesville and got through. Walter Williams was the defendant and was fined $75.

Oct 18. I worked on my porch this morning, and this evening I helped Conway shuck corn. Grace helped cook, and we were all over there for supper.

Oct 19. This morning I went to town and got some nails and one bag of fertilizer and after noon I drilled some rye, and late this evening I went to serve a summons on J. A. Rumple.

Oct 20. This morning I went to Troutman and got ten bags of fertilizer from J. L. Smith. It was 8-3-3 and I paid him $29 cash, and this evening I laid the porch floor and put up some ceiling.

Oct 21. I put some bale straw on the barn loft and hauled up a load of corn. James Summers helped me till noon, and I paid him $5 check, and this evening I worked on the porch awhile, and went and served a claim and delivery on John G..... and taken a rifle and turned it over to C. L. Nelison.

Oct 22. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School this morning and was at home till late this evening. We went over to Conway's and stayed awhile.

Oct 23. This morning I plowed in the cotton stalks till noon. James helped me.

Oct 24. I hauled two loads of wood to Troutman to Mr. Kyles.

Oct 25. Pulled corn and hauled corn all day. James Summers helped me. We pulled till noon and hauled this evening.

Oct 26. Pulled corn this morning and hauled this evening. No one helped me.

Oct 27. I pulled some corn awhile and hauled up a load till noon, and after noon I hauled one load and then fixed so the chickens could not get to the corn, and then plowed till night.

Oct 28. Plowed till noon running out cotton stalks where we are going to sow wheat. James Summers helped me till noon, and this evening I went to town. Grace and all the children went along.

Oct 29. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School, and we went from there to Mr. Willie Nash's to a birthday dinner, and was there all evening, only I went with Oscar Hoke to Lookout Shoals.

Oct 30. Plowed or cultivated cotton stalks for to sow wheat. James Summers helped me. Beatrice Ervin and John Wesley Ervin was knocked off the railroad by the train, and Beatrice was killed and died in a short time. It happened at Troutman.

Oct 31. This morning I dig out some ditches and then Grace and I went up to Troutman to Cousin Tom Ervin's and stayed there awhile, and come back home, and after noon, we went on to the church for the burying, and it was about night when we got home. It was one of the saddest funerals I was ever at as Cousin Tom had lost one of his girls 8 weeks ago.

November 1, 1922. This morning I went to Statesville after some clover seed and taken Steve Williams and Mary Pease to town, and they got married, and I brought them back home, and this evening I drilled 3 acres of wheat. James Summers helped me.

Nov 2. I hauled out manure all day and till late this evening we run out some cotton stalks. James Summers helped me.

Nov 3. This morning I went to Statesville and got some dynamite and come home and shot some stumps and James plowed, and he taken a bale of cotton to Troutman, but didn't get it ginned.

Nov 4. I cut with the disk harrow till noon and a while this evening, and James worked this morning, and one hour after noon, and this evening we went to Troutman and sold James' bale of cotton.

Nov 5. We all went to Rocky Mount to preaching and Sunday School. Grace is superintendent, and we had six classes, and this evening we stayed home until late. We went out riding and went to the new cotton mill at Troutman.

Nov 6. Drilled wheat till noon. James Summers helped me, and after noon we raked up two loads of leaves and James hauled them, and I went to town.

Nov 7. I went to the election and was there all day in and out, hauling people, and it was about nine o'clock when I got home. The county and state went Democrat.

Nov 8. I hauled up some tops this morning, and then we sprouted some till late this evening, and got done till four o'clock.

Nov 9. I went to court and was there all day. James plowed for me.

Nov 10. I was at court all day, and James harrowed one hour for me.

Nov 11. I was out summoning witnesses all day for W. C. Peary against the Southern Railway. James cut his wheat land.

Nov 12. We all went to Sunday School, and this evening we all went up to Mr. J. C. Troutman's, spent the afternoon.

Nov 13. I went to court and was there all day.

Nov 14. Drilled some wheat for James Summers and some oats for me.

Nov 15. I went to court and was there all day. Grace and the baby went with me and stayed at Clifton Troutman's. James hauled out some manure for the garden, and on his wheat, and some litter.

Nov 16. I went to court and was there all day, and tonight I went up to the County Home and summoned a witness for W. C. Peary, and it was late when I got home. James hauled some sand for his chimney. We also killed a hog this morning.

Nov 17. I went to court and was there all day, only I come to Troutman and arrested some negroes for stealing some rings from Mary Brown, and put one in jail. James hauled a load of brick for a chimney.

Nov 18. I went to court and was there all day. James Summers hauled me and him some slabs for wood.

Nov 19. Sunday. We all went to Uncle Bill Nesbitt's birthday dinner, and after noon we all went to church, and after Sunday School and preaching, we went up to Mr. Troutman's and stayed awhile, and come back home tonight.

Nov 20. This morning James and I cut some logs, and after noon we sawed them up at the mill. The lumber is for East Monbo.

Nov 21. I plowed up and hilled some sweet potatoes and then dug some Irish potatoes.

Nov 22. I taken the children to school and then went on to Jimmy Rankin's and got a load of corn as James taken the wagon, and this evening I taken some cotton to the gin, and James planted some onions.

Nov 23. We hauled wood most all day, only I went to the mill this evening. James helped me all days.

Nov 24. I hauled a load of slabs to Mr. Harwell, and I sent Will Summer with a load this evening. I killed a beef this evening, and Arthur Simms helped me, and James helped in Simms' place.

Nov 25. This morning I taken a beef to Troutman and sold it out and come home and ate dinner, and then went to town. Grace and Ernest was with me. I sold James Summers $2.40 worth of beef, and give him a check for $5.

Nov 26. Sunday. We went to Sunday School this morning, and was at home this evening, only we went over to D. L. Overcash's a while late this evening.

Nov 27. This morning I fixed up the garden and planted some onions, and then worked on James Summers' house, putting some pillars, and getting ready to build a chimney, and late this evening I went to town to get a piece of tiling and James hauled some water to start the chimney tomorrow.

Dec 3. We all went to Sunday School and preaching, and this evening we all went up to Mr. Troutman's to take Estalene Kyles to meet the people so she could go home.

Dec 4. I have been at home. Shucked corn all day.

Dec 5. I worked on James Summers' house where he is to move in, and he helped me, and late this evening we moved him, and also got him an elbow for his stove. Paid 25 cents for it.

Dec 6. Went up to the store and on to Troutman, and James finished moving this morning, and after noon I worked on a porch at or where James lives. He plowed for me this evening.

Dec 7. Shucked corn all day in the barn shed. James Summers helped me. We made 8 hours.

Dec 8. Shucked corn awhile this morning, and then James plowed the rest of the day. I worked on a porch awhile before noon, and this evening Grace and I went to Manuel Beaver's as he is sick.

Dec 9. I worked ceiling some on front porch till noon and this evening I went to J. T. Smith's sale, and it was about night when I got home.

Dec 10. Sunday. We all went to Sunday School this morning, and after noon we went up to Homer Collins' and stayed a little while.

Dec 11. I started James Summers to plowing, and I went over to Fed Nesbitt's and got his horse and plow, and we run two plows the rest of the day.

Dec 12. Plowed this morning till 10 thirty o'clock when the rain got so hard we had to stop, and after noon I went to Troutman and paid J. T. Arthur for some overshoes and got two sweaters from Waugh and Brown for $6.50.

Dec 13. This morning I went to town. Grace and Clyde went with me. James hauled a load of corn, and this evening we plowed for me till 3:30 o'clock when we went on yon side to make some ditches.

Dec 14. This morning I went up to the County Home and got an old road machine to make some ditches, but could not use it as the land too wet, and James plowed, but this evening we worked at the ditches.

Dec 15. This morning it rained all morning, and after noon I taken Uncle Mark Troutman a load of wood.

Dec 16. I have been at home most all day, only I went up to the store late this evening, and hunted a little this evening, settled with James Summers and paid him $11.52.

Dec 17. Sunday. We stayed at home all morning, and this evening Grace, Hazel and I went to preaching, and the other children stayed at home.

Dec 18. I raked some leaves and hauled them, and after noon I hauled a load of wood to Earl Allison, taking him one and a half cords of slabs, and he give me a check for $6.

Dec 19. I hauled a load of wood to W. W. Williamson, and this evening I hunted with Tom Sherrill, Stamey Mills.

Dec 21. I have been at home, and this evening I taken Nellie Blanche and Hazel to town, and they went up to Grandpa Cartwright's and I come on home.

Dec 22. I was at home this morning, but this evening I went up to Troutman to serve some papers on Waugh and Brown.

Dec 23. I was at home till up in the morning, and I then went up to Troutman and on to town, and it was late when I got home.

Dec 24. Sunday. We went to Sunday School this morning, and this evening we went over to Conway's and spent awhile.

Dec 25. I was about home this morning, sold some slabs and got up some lumber for the road company, and after noon we went up to Mr. Troutman's, Grace's father, and on to Jim Cavin's, as his wife died with the flu and pneumonia, and leaving eight children and a husband, and it was dark when we got home.

Dec 26. This morning I went up to see Waugh and Brown and collected an ...........for $450 and interest for six months, the whole being $481.20., my cost $11.75. This evening Grace and I went to Perth Church to Mrs. Jim Cavin's burying, and it was about night when we got home.

Dec 27. This morning we went to Uncle Manuel Beaver's burying and come back by Mr. Troutman's and stayed awhile, and come on home late in the evening.

Dec 28. This morning I was home, and this evening I taken Grace and the boys up to see Uncle Mark Troutman, as he is sick. I went down to Mr. F. K. Ostwalt's and paid him some money I had received for lumber. Paid him in full $29.70. Lumber sold the Super Yard Mill Co.

Dec 29. We went up to Mr. Troutman's, Grace's father, and spent the day.

Dec 30. I was at home till noon, and then went to Troutman and cried a sale for the J. M. Hartsell Estate. Got through till 3 o'clock, and then went on to Statesville and attended to some business, and brought the girls home, and on the way home, I summoned some witnesses for Dr. Kyles and Pam Morrison for Monday, Jan, 1, 1923.

Dec 31. Sunday. Grace and I went to Sunday School and left the children at home as the weather was so bad. We never had any Sunday School as it was bad and after noon I went over to Conway's and on up to Ralph Overcash's as he is sick, and it was night when we got home.
