The Hertz Family History

My Aunt Virginia, we call her Gin-Gin, is one of the lovliest women I have ever known. She is someone I always wanted to be like when I grew up. When she was 40 years old, she broke her arm playing with her grandson in a hayloft. I thought that was wonderful; not that she broke her arm, but that she would be rowdy and alive and play so actively with a child. I am now 50, not a grandchild in sight, and at this rate, won't be a grandparent for a long time. Ah, well.

Aunt Gin-Gin will be 80 years old this year. Hard to believe. She still works part time at a bakery; goes to church regularly, travels, still plays the meanest hand of Concentration Rummy on the face of the Earth.

This page is for her, and for her husband, my Uncle Raymond Hertz. He was a very quiet man with a most beautiful smile. He didn't smile often, and truth to tell, I was a bit frightened of him. When you come from a loud enviornment, quiet can be intimidating. His daughter, my cousin Jessica, is wonderful and loving and quiet and sophisticated, and leans toward her father's behaviour patterns. My cousin Linda is exuberant and filled with laughter and high spirits, as is my Aunt Gin-Gin. I don't know my cousin Teddi well, but I think she might lean toward the non-sedate.

The Hertz family is from Germany, and as far as can be determined from the data that I have, supplied by my cousin Linda , they were Hessians who emigrated in 1749. There were four Hertz brothers; Conrad, David, Peter and Andreas. My Uncle Raymond's family is descended from Conrad Hertz. Conrad had four sons and two daughters; but the information I have only deals with the sons; Conrad II, Ludwig and John.

Conrad II came from Germany with his father. He married Elizabeth Signer. They settled in Brecknock Township, Berks Co., PA, and had four girls and eight boys. John, Phillip, Conrad, Abraham, Peter, Jacob, David , Samuel, Mary, Kate, Jestine and Elizabeth. Samuel is the ancestor of Raymond Hertz.

Samuel Hertz had sixteen children; six girls, and ten boys. They were: Bernard, Cyrus, Matilda, Samuel, Jessee, Amos, Jerry,Mary, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Salinda, Franklin, Jacob, Richard, and twins who died in infancy. Unfortunatley, I have no idea of the name of the wife who bore these sixteen children.
