Dear Friends, Cousins, and Fellow Researchers,

I am so happy to have the opportunity to give back something to so many that have helped my along the way. Last year Don Cordell, someone I had never met and whose families are not the same ones I am researching, did me a wonderful favor. I am sure many of you know Don. At that time we had exchanged a couple of letters; enough for Don to realize he had something I could use. This gift was a typewritten genealogy complied by William F. Mendenhall in the 1950's and 1960's. It has taken me a while to get this into the computer. The original document is 45 pages. There were miscellaneous notes in the left and right margins. I imputed the document into the computer adding these margins notes into the main text, at the same time trying to keep the document as close to the original as possible. It is entitled: "A Genealogy--On the Coppock & Coate Families, with a Mixture of Relative Families, named Baldwin, Winslow, Knight, Parker, Terry, Haworth, Miles & Others."
For you date purists out there, I have left Mr. Mendenhall's dates as he typed them. They are a mixed bag. Although he did not say whether or not he converted Quaker dates, he was obviously aware of Quaker records and used then extensively. His document is not without error, as I found some concerning my family. And, I am sure some of you researchers have gone far beyond what he accomplished. However, he seemed to be thorough, interested in proof and accuracy, and used many sources and contributions from other researchers. His undertaking was rather an organizational nightmare for pre-computer days.
After wondering how best to share this information I've decided to post it in parts to the Quaker, Coate, and Coppock lists. If any particular day strongly features another family (Baldwin, for example), please post it for me to the pertinent list. I will display the posted parts of the document on my website until it is all out there. No doubt many will write with additions and corrections, as I hope they will. What I plan to do is leave the original document in place and build a second with corrections and additions from anyone willing to contribute.
I tried not to editorialize too much. The most comment I make appears on the first three pages of the document. Mr. Mendenhall has "Notes:" and uses parentheses. I have used brackets for my comments. Please feel free to send me yours privately and not to the list.
Below is a list of names that appear on the first four pages of this genealogy. The names with asterisks appear more than three times. Those without appear 1-3 times. The posting will be under the subject: C&C doc pt 1 (2, etc).
