I happened to stumble on your genealogy, "The Fifth Generation" and was shocked to see some of my ancestors in your Brink line. My grandmother, Helen Brewer was listed in one of your references. I sent a comment to you through your program but did not r
ceive a reply. Are you still capable? I grew up in Marathon, N.Y. and we shared some of the same Brink ancestors. I am related to the Brink's, Carter's, and Glover's of that area. They were among the first settlers in the area. The Brink's were the s
cond settlers. If you can I had some questions about how you obtained such detailed information and some other things. I wish you well. [email protected]

I just upgraded to TMG40a and am not very familiar with extended lists of tags. Specifically, I am looking for tags father-ado, mother-ado, father-stp (step parent?). My list of tags omits these but they were mentioned in the archives of TMG messages.
ow can I get them properly added to my list of tags? I am not very familiar with TMG. I have trouble with TMG's handling of only one set of parents because it makes me childless (true but difficult to deal with). Family Origins is not so harsh.

Why is there no text search on TMG?
The previous program I used was TREES III [DOS based database], but I have also used UFT which has a very good text search ability.
In TREES III you could do a seach on up 26 different criteria, from surnames to notes search to county of burial.
As often happens if I had forgotten the name or record number of someone, but could remember some detail on there notes, one or two words entered on search text would soon find the record I was looking for.

With TMG-how do you put in an Index & Citation List? If you change SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION for a tag of one person-does this carry thru for all persons in your Data Set? Thanks Jim

Hello Allen,
I have just recently purchased The Master Genealogist and am looking for all the ideas and help available.
I have hundreds of names to enter. I used to have PAF on a Mac but haven't kept that up for about 4 years so I'll be starting from scratch. I don't want to do too much with TMG before I've worked out just *how* I want to enter it! I've put in about 100
names and am experimenting.
Thanks for your page!
I just read your thoughts about uncles, cousing, aunts i.e. lots of rellies and possible rellies in one place. I've come across the same thing recently - with my children's father's Osborne/Maxwell line in Braade, Glencolumkille, Donegal.
Regards,
Judy Philip

We've just started using TMG a couple of months ago and we're still feeling our way around. We had been using Family Origins and also just upgraded to their release 8.0 because so far we like their report layouts better (appearance wise) and may just tra
sfer gedcom files to Family Origins to get most basic reports rather than trying to create them in TMG.

I envy those lovely dependancy charts! I get garbage instead of the '|' and '-'.
Has anyone seen any patches yet to 4.0?

Allen, my main problem with TMG is the Custom Report Writer. It is really difficult to understand the use of all those filters. It should really be designed in a more straightforward styles for those of us who are not programmers!! Or a very basic book s
ould be compiled devoted solely to CRW. We have a users groups here in Cleveland and we have been sharing report information with each other. Slow progress.
We all love the program inspite of the complicated report writer.

Was interested in your filters for reports.
I have all my info recorded in TMG - just seem
to be 'fouling up' the type of reports I want.
The 'filters, etc.' under all the tab headings
don't seem to do what "I want them to"!!!!!
I would like a report of all my deceased relatives, starting with the oldest down to my parents. I would like for all the spouses and children of those persons to be included, with their birth/death/marriage dates. Also, the spouses' parents.
The resources and personal notes will only be sent to those I want to have them - so therefore I do NOT want them included in my report.
I like the way the 'linear Ahnentafel' report prints the info BUT it only includes the direct lineage. I want spouses, aunts, uncles, cousins,
etc. included.
I have used the filter "DECEASED' & Y value - so have just the names I want in my 'sub-data file'.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for suggestions about how to same my TMG data set(s) in paper form. While the computer is great, I worry that data collected only in computer form will be lost due to changes in technology. Also paper archives reveal their content to the ca

Your site is nice and simple, I have been lurking on the tmg-l for some months now, as I have been trying to learn tmg. I find the tmg-l to be very helpful, although some of the subjects are over my head at this time. I look forward to some more items on
ou site. Thanks, Audrey

Was wondering if you were interested in seeing if we have a link on the Brink side. I saw that your database has 12,000 names. Ours has over 9,000. We have taken back our Brink line to the late 1500s in Germany. Our Brink line came to the states f
om Westphalia Prussia in 1845 and settled in Washington County, Illinois.
If you would like for me to try to run a comparison of our two databases, please feel free to send me yours and I'll see what I can come up with.
Also, feel free to look at my web site. It is still under construction (and always will be). My mother and I published a book 'Our Brink Heritage'. It is almost 500 pages in two volumes. I have placed most of the contents on the web site.
I have almost 17,000 web pages on my site which includes all of the individuals, families, and Notes from our database as of a few months ago.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Your Favorite Genealogy Program: R5,UFT,now TMG

Started with R3, R4 and R5, when Pallidium bought out R5 and combined it with UFT, the tech support went down hill.
So at the beginning of this year I went on the net asking people what they thought was the best gene sw was. I down loaded demos and liked what TMG could do. Now it's just trying to figure out how to do it. Making reports and filtering are confusing to
say the least, however, I've only been using the program for 2 months.
I've seen yr name pop up alot in the tmg-l and you seem pretty knowledgeable of things. So here's a ? for you. When I did a gedcom into TMG and later looked in the files I saw that the files xferred over with UFT file names. When I did a save under TMG
t still carried UFT file names. Is there anyway to get rid of seeing that it is still assoc with UFT or am I sol? I'm probably being picky but I don't want to see anything related to UFT or R5 again.
Reason why:
When I was under R5 there was some kind of glitch in my program, I sent it into R5 and they fixed it. They never explained what the prob was but I know it had something do with finding where files where located . When I gedcom over to UFT the error went
with it and I had to send diskettes to UFT to again correct the prob. When I then gedcom over to TMG again a prob, but this time it was crashing when flags were being inputted in the UFT. So in UFT I deleted all the flags and was able to finally get a g
dcom into TMG.
Because I'm disguested with seeing these files, I am actually re-typing everyone into TMG. this is a massive job 9,000 people. I've done 1, 000 eight to go. I just want a clean data list.
It would be nice to not to type all of this info in but at the same time I'm learning what the sw can do. As I said earlier I haven't even begun on the reports yet I'm just getting everyone in the system.
I enjoy reading the tmg-l seeing how others are helping each other....later dawn

Appreciate your TMG hints page. Should be referenced more often on the net.
Something that I do for printed reports - I created a tag called ACTION. I have the default sentence as "Action: <[M]>" . I then date the tag as year 3000, putting it at the bottom of the list and the last thing to print out. In the memo I note proble
s in data entry so that others can read about problems in my data entry. Can also then sort on tag equal to ACTION to generate a separate list.

Allen, thanks for the response to my multi-flag post. I really missed on the "arts" as a
flag, since most of my family is involved in the arts in some way. My cousin is the coductor
of the Gregg Smith Singers in your city, my stepson is a costumer at Colo. State U., another
cousin is an artist for Disney. And I almost blew it and left that out! Thank you! Chuck.
