We were on our 7th War Patrol and had just gone deep after firing a series of torpedoes and sinking two ships. The breaking up noises could be heard as we went deep. Our safe diving depth was 300 feet. Mr Stinson, who was the Engineering Officer, was directing the dive and Cdmr Shelby was the skipper. We dove in cold water and hit a warm water current at 240 feet and we lost control of the dive! Slowly we were diving deeper. I was in the Forward Torpedo Room and I could feel the Sunfish going deeper and it felt like we were dragging on tin roof right over another. I am sure that they were using the pumps at this point for we were beyond 400 feet! Finally, control and relief came at 480 feet. We were almost 200 feet BELOW our safe diving depth. The good thing was that the Japs were pinging in cold and warm water and that was throwing their sonar off. The depth charges were still raining down but they were not too close. Slowly, we came back to 300 feet and continued to evade.
