One day, the SUNFISH was on the surface charging her batteries and looking for Japanese shipping to attack. In short, a normal day for the sub and her crew.
This quiet interlude of the war was shattered by the scream of a lookout who reported a torpedo coming at them! It was too close to do anything but watch the
Japanese "Long Lance" speed its way towards them. Fortunately for the SUNFISH, the Japanese sub skipper had misjudged his distance and shot the torpedo from
too close inboard!!! The torpedo, not having reached its set cruising depth, passed harmlessly under the SUNFISH, who did not give the Japs a second chance.
I'm sure the order was, "FLANK SPEED!" And a course was set to put the Japs at 180 degress to the SUNFISH. Lucky for them that the Jap skipper screwed up or Dad and
his shipmates would have been on eternal patrol and I, and my siblings, would have never been born!
