
A "V" emblem on a medal denotes meritorious action on the individual's part during COMBAT!
The USS SUNFISH was awarded the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION ribbon with the following citation

"For outstanding heroism in action against enemy Japanese shipping during her Ninth War Patrol in the Yellow Sea from 23 Oct, 1943 to 19 Dec, 1943; and her Eleventh War Patrol in the area northeast of Honshu from 31 Mar 1945 to 28 Apr 1945. Operating in BOLD DEFIANCE of PERSISTENT and HOSTILE counter-measures, the USS SUNFISH penetrated treacherous currents and shoal waters to attack her targets. Often withstanding HEAVY enemy GUNFIRE and prolonged depth charging, she launched her torpedoes with devastating speed and skill, destroying or damaging NINE ships, including an 8,000 ton Naval Auxiliary. Constantly ready for combat despite severe storms and DENSE FOG, the SUNFISH served with distinction in carrying the Battle of the Pacific into the enemy's home waters, and her intrepidity in action reflects the highest credit upon her skilled and courageous officers and men and upon the United States Naval Service."
IN ADDITION, the USS SUNFISH received NINE battle stars on the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Medal for:
1 star for Marshall Island Operation. Air attacks designated by CinCPac on defended Marshall Islands. 27 Jan 1944.
1 star for Truk attack 16-17 Feb 1944 and Marianas attack 21-22 Feb 1944.
1 star for Iwo Jima Operation. Assault and Occupation of Iwo Jima. 15-20 Feb 1945.
1 star for Okinawa Operation. Assault and Occupation of Okinawa. 6-20 April 1945.
1 star for Submarine War Patrol, Pacific. 4 Feb to 3 April, 1943.
1 star for Submarine War Patrol, Pacific. 28 Jul to 25 Sept, 1943.
1 star for Submarine War Patrol, Pacific. 22 Jun to 8 Aug, 1944.
1 star for Submarine War Patrol, Pacific. 20 Aug to 27 Sept, 1944.
1 star for Submarine War Patrol, Pacific. 23 Oct to 29 Dec, 1944.
STATISTICS: 312 feet long, 27 foot beam, 1,525 tons displacement, 20 knot surface speed, 8.5 knot underwater speed, 85 officers and men, Ten 21 inch torpedo tubes with 24 torpedoes, and (1) 4".50 caliber Deck Gun and smaller AA guns.
