Our United Methodist Men Unit meets on the third Sunday night
of each month. During Daylight Savings Time we meet at 6:00 p.m. During
Standard Time we meet at 5:30 p.m. Our Meetings are typically held at a
local restaurant called Aunt Sally's. We have a Dutch treat meal and a
business session. The typical meeting lasts between an hour and an hour
and a half.
Throughout the year, the United Methodist Men engage in varying
activities:
Making Apple Butter
Each fall for the last several years, the United Methodist
Men have made one or more pots of apple butter in a copper kettle over
and open flame--in other words, the old fashioned way. This apple butter
is sold and the proceeds are used to fund various projects around the church
as well as for missions and other needs.
Collecting Money for Mountain Community Action Program
(CAP)
For several years now, the United Methodist Men have
taken special offerings of non-perishable food items, personal toiletries,
and money which was given to Mt. CAP in Marion, Virginia. Mt. CAP operates
a food bank, a clothing bank, and supplies limited assistance with medical
and utility bills.
July Hot Dog and Ice Cream Fellowship Supper
Its been a tradition that our July Fellowship Supper
is hosted by the United Methodist Men. The members of the group put on
their aprons and pull out their grills to cook hot dogs for the meal. The
members also make assorted home made ice creams. One of the best fellowship
suppers each year.
Other Activities
In addition to the above activities, the unit also promotes
and helps with the quarterly road side clean up project sponsored by our
church. We support the Scouting emphasis of the General Church through
an offering each year. We also do minor repairs and maintenance around
the church through out the year.
Through the General Commission on United Methodist Men, the
General Church seeks to help local United Methodist Men's Units in the
