The General Conference of the United Methodist
Church specifies six church wide offerings which all United Methodist Churches
should take each year. Currently Chilhowie UMC participates in two of those
General Church Offerings.
One Great Hour of Sharing
One Great hour of Sharing is observed with a special offering
on the fourth Sunday in Lent. LEnt is the season of repentance, self-examination,
and awareness of the hurts of the peoples of the world. One Great Hour
of Sharing calls the church to share the goodness of life with those who
hurt. The net proceeds of this offering, after paying for its promotion,
are given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
World Communion Sunday
World Communion Sunday is observed on the first Sunday in
October with a special offering. This day call the church to be the catholic
inclusive church God desires. Over one half of the receipts taken on this
day go to ministries beyond the United States of America. The receipts
are divided as follows:
50 percent of receipts go for Crusade Scholarships
35 percent go for the Ethnic Scholarship Program
15 percent go for the Ethnic In-Service Training Program
Please note: Information on these offerings was taken
from The Book of Discipline-1996.
