The Season After the Epiphany
At Chilhowie UMC, we celebrate the seasons of
the Christian Year.
What is the Season After Epiphany?
The Season After the Epiphany is a season of Ordinary
Time, which includes four to nine Sundays, depending on the date of Easter.
It is ordinary in that it stands between the two great christological cycles
of Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter-Pentecost and has no central theme.
The First Sunda focuses on the Baptism of Christ and the Last Sunday on
the Transfiguration. The Gospel readings in the lectionary center on stories
from the early ministry of Christ.

Ways that We Celebrate During the Season After
the Epiphany
At Chilhowie UMC, we celebrate During the Season After
Epiphany in the following ways:
- Epiphany begins on January 6th. If we have a worship
service on or near that day, then we hear the traditional texts in which
the wise men find the Christ child. Epiphany means manifestation. Christ,
was manifested to those that sought him.
- The First Sunday in the Season After the Epiphany is
Baptism of Our Lord Sunday. We celebrate this day with a special liturgy
that allows us to renew our Baptismal vows.
- The Last Sunday in the Season After the Epiphany is Transfiguration
of Our Lord Sunday. We celebrate this day by focusing on the meaning/message
of our Lord's Transfiguration.
- To close out the Season After the Epiphany, we have at
times held a Shrove Tuesday fellowship supper. We would have pancakes and
sausage. This is the day before Ash Wednesday and tradionally, you did
without such foods during the season of Lent. Mardi Gras is a festival
of exuberance and extravagence prior to the season of Lent.
