The man who is the subject of this sketch, Col. Hiram Eastland, was born in Lincoln County, Tenn., in 1829 and moved to Hinds county, Miss., in 1836 with his parents, where he remained one year. In 1837 he located in Hillsboro, where he grew to maturity. Col. Eastland's father, Capt. Alfred Eastland, was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., and was born in 1806. He removed to Madison County, Ala., where he married Miss Eliza Petty. About 1828, he located in Middle Tennessee, from there removed to Scott county, Miss., and died in Waco, Tex., where he was visiting a son in the year 1870. Col Hiram Eastland was married in Scott county, to Miss Bettie Smith, a daughter of John J. Smith, who was a native of North (?South) Caroline, and one of Scott county's pioneer settlers, being one of the very first to clear out a place for a home in the wilderness, and becoming one of its prominent men. He took a keen interest in the general welfare of the county. He was the first sheriff of Scott county and took an active part in the removal of the Indians from that part of the state of Mississippi.
GIP SMITH, of Whitney, Hill county, was born in Scott county, Mississippi, January 31, 1844, a son of J. J. Smith, who was born in Edgefield district, South Carolina, in 1800 (?1799). The latter removed to Kentucky when a young man, and was there married to Miss Margaret Butler, who was born in 1812 (?1802). They then moved to Mississippi, and in 1855 came to Bosque county, Texas, where the father engaged in the stock business. He died in 1867, at the age of sixty-seven years. The parents had nine (?twelve) children, viz.: Silas McCabe (?Margaret Ann Smith McCabe), A. B. (?Anderson B.), Berton (?Burton), Elizabeth, Estland (?Elizabeth Eastland), T. J. (Thomas Jefferson), Emily Burks, M. V. (Martin Van Buren), Gip (Thomas Gipson), and Laura. (other children Seaborn, Martha and Ratliff are listed elsewhere)
On Sunday, Aug. 12, the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a few friends of Mrs. Seldon Smith, gathered at the Calloway Grove, south of town, for a family reunion. the day was spent in talking about things which occurred in the days gone by. At the noon hour boxes and baskets were brought from the cars and their contents, consisting of barbecued meats, vegetables, chicken, both fried and baked, ham, sausage, salads, pickles, relishes, jams, jellies, pies, cakes, tea and coffee, were placed on the long table and after thanks had been offered each was told to help himself. Those present to enjoy the bountiful feast with Mrs. Seldon Smith were: Mr. and Mrs. Clif Broyles, Margaret Ella and Clif Jr., of Yuma Ariz; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith and Murl of Belton; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reeves of Lott; Frantz Sherman, Dallas; Mrs. W. H. Harris and Miss Virginia Kay, Tyler; Mrs. Tom Smith, Lynn Smith, Mrs. O. L. Rogers, Miss Nell Rogers, Miss Marie Tedley, Mrs. Howard Chumley, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Rogers and Leon Jr., of Waco; Mrs. J. B. Tarpley, Mrs. Walter Lanford and children, Misses Ben and Fannie Maude Tarpley, Mr and Mrs. Seabie Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Smith, Hillsboro; Mrs. Jason Broyles, Mr. and Mrs. Otho Calloway, Mr. and Mrs. Seab Smith, Mr and Mrs. Oliver Smith and Patricia, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rose, Margaret Alice and Raymond Jr., Mr. and Mrs. P. Mrs. Emma Harris Smith, widow of Selden Smith, passed to her reward at 11:30 o'clock, friday morning, April 5, aged 86 years, 1 month and 14 days. Mrs. Smith was born in Scott county, Mississippi, February 21, 1854, and was the daughter of Tom and Lydia Harris. The family came to Texas from Hillsboro, Mississippi, in 1869, locating in Bosque County, and Mrs. Smith had lived in Bosque and Hill counties since. She was married to Selden Smith May 10, 1870. At the age of 18 she united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Smith Bend, and had been a member of the church for some 68 years. she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene at Yates at the time of her death. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Broyles, Mrs. Fannie Sherman, Mrs. Maud Calloway, all of Whitney, Mrs. Dora Tarpley of Hillsboro, Mrs. Nina Rogers of Waco, and Mrs. Nita Knox of Peoria; three sons, Seab and Sidney of Whitney, Malcolm of Waco; 27 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and one brother Sidney Harris of Comanche. She had a total of 62 descendants, and only four are deceased. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock from the Whitney Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. F. E. Weller, pastor, and Rev. A. Reilly Copeland of Tabernacle Baptist church, Waco. The special music was given by the choir of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Interment was in DeGraffenreid cemetery under the direction of Marshall and Marshall. Pall bearers were her grandsons, Oliver, Ralph, Linn and Robert smith, Selden Tarpley and Leon Rogers. The beautiful floral offerings and large gathering of friends spoke eloquently of the high esteem in which she was held.
