I must explain first to tell you who I am and then I can proceed to tell you this amazing story of all that has happened to me and my best friend..
My name is Florence..most all call me Flo..and my best friend is Suzanne..we have know each other it seem's for a million years..sharing thoughts..our ideas of life..sorrows..and the mystique of just life in general..Suzanne is a fantastic person..lively..energetic..beautiful with having the best humor..her shinny eyes sparkle when she is trying to explain about something..she is an enchantress
She has so many things she can do one being crafts..just from imagination she can whip out something that looks like you paid a small fortune for it at a nice high priced store..
We first met of all places in a small chat room on the internet..from that day onward we have never lost contact..we have met each other in person..and this only gave more love in feelings foreach other..we are like two sisters..what a wonderful relationship for us both..
Well let me tell you more about our hidden find.. It was in the first few weeks of the spring..the weather breaking ..and the new life forming from months of cold solitude..spring was upon us an no one better than ourselves wanted this nice weather to be here forever..
Suzanne had just gotten her pilot's license..and of course the two of us would do something spectacular from her knowledge of flying..we met and decided to fly to VA..not that far..but also a nice trip for both..we living in North Carolina..landing in Patrick Henry Airport..and spend the weekend in Williamsburg Va..seeing and doing and buying little trinkets to take to family and friends..we had a great weekend
This was wonderful..anywhere we wanted to go we could do it by flying ..no more driving..and I had the upmost confidence in Suzanne she was very professional..and trust was always there..
This morning we decided to go to see some friends out in the further southern states..leaving from NC National Air Port..we started ..into the blue and white clouded sky..it was pleasant weather and the flight would only take a couple hours where we were going..we were talking and looking..and the plane started a decent..Suzanne pulling pack on the stick..and said we were having a little problem..with me not knowing heads or tails for that matter about a plane and it's internal maintenance this would have to be her choice on what to do..finally with a lot of thinking much less praying we chose to land..
Now we are in the mountain's of TN..there is farm land and fields..whether we really wanted to do this was not a choice..we had too..so in finding an area we slowly made our decent..Suzanne bringing the plane to a comfortable landing..now what? Would we have to stay here..or walk..or where would we go..for help..?
Suzanne did file a flight plan..and we did send out our May Day distress message..She and I were sure if not positive that someone would find us..in a couple hours..search parties would be out..although in a field far from anyone..we were in the middle of no where..Thank goodness we still had plenty of day light hour's..we had our emergency packs..and knew that it would be only a matter of time and we would be rescued..
After several hours we were getting distressed and just exasperated at what had happened..and decided to take the long haul out by foot..there was not a dirt road to be seen..but since this was a field surely there was a way into here..and out!!
Whenever we started to climb the little knolls to higher ground the thorns, vines and trees were so thick it was a up hill loosing batter..we would eventually go back the way we came and try in another direction..
Here we were not getting anywhere this way..so we thought the best route would be to go towards the south the way we came in..turning and retreating we did find a little pig path walk way and took this..we walked and walked..and walked some more..now just being simply tired..we sat and started talking about what we should do, maybe we should have stayed with the plane..but we had heard nothing above pertaining to a search plane to indicate that we were being looked for in the first place..resting for a while and trying to decide on what to do we got up and trudged on..
Not far off there stood a small cabin in the middle of a thicken wooded area..it was and had been there for a very long time from the disarray of the cabin..the discolored wood, with the usual rotting home not taken care of..
Walking closer..we yelled.."hello there..anyone home" of course we knew there would be no answer..but still protocol was best than none at all ..and we felt better by trying..
Lifting a wooden lift board with a rope handle to open the door..we walking inside..it actually was not all that bad considering how long this home had been empty..and the outward appearence when you first saw the little cabin..but it was shelter..although Suzanne had a cell phone with all the mountains around us we could not receive or send any word to anyone..no clear signal at all..
Now if we were on top of the mountain.. possible..to our dismay the woods were to thick and impassable to proceed to the top..maybe we could try tomorrow..with better luck..
Our emergency packs put aside..we gathered wood for a fire..the mountain chill in the spring could go to your bones when the sun was down..and we wanted to try and get all our necessary idea's on what we had to do and finish before dark..
With the roaring fire and our emergency canned foods..we were comfy and cozy..our sleeping bags would be a welcomed thought tonight..we found an old kerosene lantern half filled to where we did have a little light from the darkness and thought this was better than not any at all..wondering and looking into the corners..there was a book..few personal items like a family picture..with a few cooking pots..several iron skillets and a chest dusty with brass hinges..opening it there were blankets wrapped in newspaper..and looking on the date's I saw 1845..how could anything stay that long and not be only dust by now..maybe someone just wrapped these belongings for safe keeping with the use of some paper they found.. at any rate push come to shove we did have some warm country quilts..thick feathered quilts..
The next morning stiff from sleeping on the floor and sore from the walk Suzanne and I knew we had to leave here today once and for all..there was no two ways about this..country life was fine but I sure did not want to start living this unsheltered life right now out of the blue..I wanted to go home.!!
We tried several trail's but to no avail they led to no where..trying to get to the top of the mountain was still impossible..straight up there was nothing to catch onto..nothing but smooth rock clifts..if we were climbers we might possibly have made it but there again this would have been a miracle for those who could climb and try and succeed..
We both were near tears..and decided to head back to the old cabin..once inside we sat and just looked out the window..hearts broken from our all day venture to get out of this little area with no success..walking to the other door to a little room on the north side of the cabin..I opened the door and walked in.. I see something over towards the middle of the room..what is that a oil spot or paint spot..going closer to see..it looks like a round circle a tunnel like trap door..why had we not noticed this earlier..we only did glance in this room yesterday and never did pay any attention to anything actually here..
Yelling for Suzanne she came in a hurry out of my urgent calls.."Wonder what that is Suzanne was saying..looks like an old water well door" Walking over I pulled the lid up..there I could hear people talking ..children in laughter..and other noises which were from the usual city sounds..peering into the hole a little more clearer now we could see steps going downward.."Well it's now or never" Suzanne was saying and grabbing my hand we proceeded down the small narrow steeps..going deeper and deeper we came to another larger area..and out into the bright sunlight..children playing..a horse pulled cart with bags of seed and flour combined on the cart..with a gentle looking man with his bibbed overalls and straw hat..
Looking further we saw ladies of the early victorian era dressed in their finery..upon seeing us standing there with our eyes wide and mouth agape..a lovely elderly lady said "Welcome to Field Hollow..you found your way here I see.."I am Mattie LaPair..and I have been here for years..now there are some newer people from your age group and probably from your time right over yonder"..pointing in the direction she was talking about..
Now this has been nearly five years ago..we have made friends with those in our own age group as others..and have often tried to "get back" but there is no path or we have not found it..I hear it only comes certain times in a century..so how long we may be here who knows..This Field Hollow is a nice and warm welcomed country place..no money ever exchanges hands..and people enjoy the layed back simple life as they did century's ago..some do farming other's tend to do nothing..but we all get along..and when the portal opens again I wonder if we may leave here or who will venture here..what ever we find this is our life..and above all our choice now..for the moment
