I could not wait..going to see the ocean was a dream..my best girlfriend DeeDee was ready too! We lived where there were lakes..man made and otherwise..but to actually see the ocean..this was something she and I always wanted to do..so packed and anxious..it was hard to rest all night..when morning came we were ready..first I had to go pick up DD she would be up no use to call..excited as she and I were I knew we would have a ball..
We both worked for a lawyers office..as a stenographer we were always busy..and we worked hard and did not take many vacations..but this one was going to be different..we had a full two weeks off and all the more reason to get going...we did not want to miss a thing going or coming.
As I arrived to pick up DD she was almost ready and I could see the joy in her eyes as we carried her luggage to the car..we had nearly two hours to get to the airport and our flight..but always better to be early than late..and why not..we could always get a bite to eat..we sure could not eat now..the thoughts of just going seemed to give us no thought of food.
"TR" aren't you just so glad to get away from the office DD was saying" as we drove towards the interstate to go to the airport.."Boy, you can say that again..no work for two weeks..and I'm going to get a good tan..and have a grand time.." While listening to the stereo I could only wonder how things would be at the beach house we had rented..it was a small fortune..but for the two weeks of pleasure we felt it was well worth it.
Arriving at the airport there was the usual gathering of people going here and there..and people with fussy children tired from long trips..in away I did envy them..I mean being a family..neither DD or I were married..but felt we had plenty of time for all that..we were still young..although at times I sure did not feel like it for the hours we worked..long and hard..and sometimes overtime just to keep up..but the pay was excellent and that meant a lot too!!
Our trip was not all that long but I sure did know what people meant by jet lag..we both were really tired..but arriving at the wonderful warm sunny location of Hawaii all the unrest vanished..it was simply wonderful and gorgeously beautiful..and the Hawaiian ladies were there to greet us with their lays of flowers..oh boy..this was just fantastic..
Getting a taxi and going to our rental home we were driven through and around some of most beautiful land I had ever seen..the flowers of many different styles..were like heaven to see..such a variety and assortment..the grounds and land all green and lush..and manicured to the point of not a blade of grass out of place..perfect was the only word I could think of..the water a crystal blue..shinny from the sun's rays high in the sky..this surely was a paradise..
We both were surprised to see a very nice detailed home..still very much the modern attire..and it was absolutely spotless..the white sheer curtains blowing in the breeze as we entered..we both looked at each other with nothing but big smiles on our faces this is what we both were dreaming of..how quant and cute this home was..now I could see why it cost so much what I could see it sure was worth it..I was not at all dissatisfied..
After eating supper at a great expensive restaurant..we had to splurge at least once while here..it did not take us long to get home for nothing more than a good nights rest.. longing to get into bed I heard DD go to her room next to mine..and she I knew had fallen as I into that dream land of enchantment..in this beautiful place
Up bright and early and refreshed DD and myself drank some tea..and talked of what we would do this day..having decided we would go onto the beach..rent one of those paddle boats and explore some of the inlet coves..this would be nice..take our time and see all we could each day with loads of pictures to take and share with those back home..
We found a nice paddle boat and both knew we were pretty well on the athletic side..fit wise to do this..and in the boat and off we were..just taking out time and looking at all the other people doing as we did ..children on the beach playing..and family's just enjoying themselves..the temperature although hot was not that bad with the cool breeze blowing..but we were sure to use plenty of sun block..we continued on around a little out cove..it was so blue and clear and peaceful..
we thought hey why not..lets go on around to the other side..we did not see any other people here and thought this was fine..maybe this would be our little private area for peace and quiet..and in paddling along we both noticed a bubbly rise in the water..this must be one of those hot gushers I had read about..or maybe a lava stream from one of the volcano's..we did not want to get to close..or maybe we were already to close..in trying to back peddle we could not..both DD and I pulled hard on the leg peddles..and in doing so we were beginning to get tired..when in a flash we were being pulled to the center of the bubbly circle..
Both of us now scared and screaming and pulling in the opposite direction for naught..we were going under..trying to hold our breath..all I could think of was this was the end..Please God save us..in a split second we were into something like a glass enclosed tunnel..going faster and faster..and with the thoughts of dyeing by drowning was all I could think of..if I had not already..we were going to the pearly gates..
All of a sudden we were here ...but where!! I knew we had to be dreaming..we were in an area where I could see many people..walking and talking ..just as the normal person does each day..looking at DD she still had a dazed look on her face..and looking at me I could see the same thoughts..where were we..
settling down to a slow movement we were guided to a landing..and standing on the landing was a lady so sweet in appearance saying"Welcome" we first did not know what to do..and continued to sit and just stare..offering her hand to help us get out of our paddle boat..she spoke with a gentle voice and said.." Welcome to Atlantis" what..how..you've got to be kidding is all I could blurt out..smiling the lady said "oh we have been here for generations..but very seldom anyone is caught up in the vortex of our waters..but unlike those who perished a thousand years ago..we here have adapted to these surroundings..and although you were unfortunate to come through as you have this day..I must tell you now..you cannot return..this is forbidden"..
So now in time I have learned to except this wondrous place..DD and I have families now..and all that we need for comfort and love..and I would not trade places with anyone..we both have wondered through out the years of our families and loved ones and we both have tormented over the worry we must have given them..the first few years were hard for us both..but God must have sent us here for some reason..we will always be grateful for the safety we did receive..learning some did not get this far..in the vortex..there are things in this world unexplainable..knowing we are two of them!!
