The Teddybear Picnic Song

I had not been in my new home long..the thoughts of moving was aggravation enough..but then again the thoughts of having something new and shiny was nice too..!!
With in a month all the moving was shaping up and things were looking homey and just like I wanted them...I had full rein over doing all..since no one else wanted to do it..I even made some curtains which for me was something different and new..and in taking much pain in doing them right..they did turn out so pretty..I was so proud..and they did not look cheap..either..which was my main goal to have them look as rich and nice as if bought...
It was different the first few weeks..of getting up with the beautiful sun peeking in my bedroom window..now I had a choice to pull the drapes..or let the sun shine in..I chose the latter..one reason to make sure I would get up and not waste the morning in bed..I loved the early morning to myself..while hubby would get up and go off to work..here I was left to piddle around as I pleased..some quiet time..
Things were on a normal schedule now..and with the winter here I was doing all that needed to be done for the impending New Year..
The announcement of officially the first day of winter for the twenty first of December was around the corner..and as I settled into bed that night..I hear such a commotion outside..
What in the world was going on..going to the living room and opening the front door..I hear dogs raising such a ruckus I had to try and find out what the deal was..asking hubby to listen..we both now stepped out onto the front porch and both were shocked to hear all sorts of growls..dogs screeching.. a combination of noises from the laurel thicket..which being right beside our driveway..listen hubby was saying..I hear a bear..yes that's what it was ..in listening to all the noise..we could hear a bear..the growls were loud and intending..and showing who was boss..the dogs yelping loudly..and then another yelp along with more growls.. hearing a different sound it was another bear..smaller..this had to be a bear cub..
"We sure don't need to be here in sight on this front porch"..I hear hubby say..and although curiosity on my part was there it was not safe at all..going back inside..my knees were shaking..and I felt the excitement mount as I continued to hear the growls..
Now it sure was something to hear this in real life..seeing a movie..or wildlife show sure did not make up for what was going on outside in our yard ..my adrenalin was high..and my heart beating faster I had some fear!! What if..what if that bear were to try and get in here..having a cub was bad enough ..but there were two of them..she would be so very protective over her babies..
The noise now was concentrated to the back of our home..swiftly going to the back of our home we slowly opened the kitchen door more so out of curiosity than anything else..there she was..a poor pitiful site of a she bear..half starved..and the two babies she was trying to protect just off in the distance still in the dim light of the porch light..
The dogs had frightened one of the cubs..and in doing this the cub had darted up a tree..the dogs at the bottom circling in anticipation for the cub to come down..and now the momma bear was charging towards the dogs..they scattered..but like a pack of wolves it did not take them long in returning to try and torment the little cub..there sure was nothing I could do..we sat and watched from the kitchen table..and in doing this ..I felt pity for the she bear..I was actually rooting for the bear..not the dogs..they were a worrisome lot..and not a one was mine..
The she bear knowing her cub was safe for the moment turned towards her other off spring..and both ran towards the valley behind our home..in doing this the dogs took off in grand pursuit right behind..I could not see anything now..and wondered if the little bears were safe..from impending doom if she did not kill the dogs first..
I did not have a gun or rifle in my home..they never did appeal to me..I kept the thoughts in my mind if this would be an occurrence from time to time..the bear season for hunting was open now..people and their dogs were out for bear if only for a souvenir saying they had killed one..strapping those they had finally killed to the hood of their big jeeps or four by four trucks..with their dogs howling in glory of the hunt..chained inside to the back of their truck beds..
I had foreseen this situation in the past..and made note to post no trespassing signs..private property and no hunting to make sure this would not happen..at least on our property.. but it was unfortunate in the hunting season with dogs waring beeper collars..those men never did know from where or what direction the dogs went once getting the scent..so here we were putting up with this problem..now this really did irritate me to the fullest.
The days went by with no more problem from dogs..or the bear's..and as I sit here looking out over the valley..I wonder how our little cubs are doing..the she bear has been in and around here for some time now..and although I have seen her from time to time walking in the distance..or have heard her over the ridge..there has never been an encounter such as the other night..she does not want to be bothered as I sure do not..and I feel she has been here longer than I have..she is our little valley bear..and our friendly protector..
