Philip FRANCIS was born 7 June 1853 in Danville, Schuylkill County, PA, to Welsh immigrants, whose names we think were Philip FRANCIS and Rebecca HARRIS (these names were given by his daughter Hannah as his parents for his Tennessee death certificate). The elder "Philip" died a few months after his son was born. "Rebecca" remarried David JAMES about 1856 in St. Clair, Schuylkill County, PA, and died not long after she gave birth to Philip's stepbrother, Thomas JAMES in 1857. Rebecca had a sister in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, PA, who had a son, James THOMAS, born about 1853 in Schuylkill County, PA. Rebecca's sister's given name may have been Eliza (based on the William JAMES family from the 1870 Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, PA, census). Philip and Rebecca FRANCIS were said to have emigrated from Caerphilly, Glamorgan, Wales, in 1851, perhaps along with Rebecca's sister and husband surnamed THOMAS. The elder Philip's father was Richard FRANCIS. Philip wrote in his autobiography, "Seventy Years in the Coal Mines" published for his family about 1943, that his grandfather, Richard FRANCIS, lived on a farm called the Evalt Farm. (From some research and help from Huw DANIEL in Wales, the actual name was probably Wenallt). There is a Richard FRANCIS, age 51, farmer, b. Glamorgan, with 20 acres of land in the Wenallt Uchaf section of the 1851 Caerphilly, Glamorgan, Wales census, along with wife, Mary, 55, b. Lewes, Sussex, and Sarah FRANCIS, 14, General Servant, b. Eglwysilan, Glamorgan. These may have been Philip's grandparents. Philip's grandfather, Richard, wrote him a letter when he was about 10 years of age (about 1863) asking him and his sister, Margaret, to return to Wales to help with the farm, as Philip was the closest heir. Being 10 years of age and having no one to advise him, he did not respond to the letter and remained in the USA.
He had only one or two years of formal schooling and went to work in the coalmines when he was about 9 years of age. The colorful life of this self-made man is detailed in the above autobiography, which can be viewed at the following URLs:
