Edward Francis was born in Augusta County, Virginia between 1745 and 1750. According to Virginia Historical
Magazine (bibliographical information not known), the Francis family in Augusta County, Virginia came from Chester
County, Pennsylvania.
There was also a William Francis in Augusta County, Virginia as early as 1776. In that year
he enlisted to serve in the Revolutionary War (Captain Thomas Bell's Company; Colonel Grayson's Regiment). He was
in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown, and was discharged at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
on account of disability in 1779. He was pensioned from 1 January, 1787 under the Act of 7 June, 1783. At that time
he was living in Augusta County, Virginia. In 1820 he was still living in said county and state. He was eighty years old
at the time.
Other Augusta County, Virginia records from 1745 through 1800 list other members of Francis
families: Ann Francis, George Francis, John Francis, May Francis, and Thomas Francis. No definite connection has
been established as far as I know.
As early as 1779 Edward Francis was in the section of North Carolina which
became Rutherford County, and then Cleveland County. The marriage date of Edward Francis, nor the name of his
wife are known. But it is known that his first two children, David and Joseph Francis, were born in Virginia. The
names of the known children of Edward Francis were as follows: David Francis (born 1769-1770), Joseph Francis (born
1772-1773), Daniel Francis (born before 1790), Young Francis (born before 1795), Mary Francis, Elizabeth Francis,
and Marged Francis. There were apparently four other children whose names are not known to me.
