THE STORY OF KUMA LISA

Kuma Lisa is the personification of the vixen in Bulgarian folklore. She's quite cunning and crafty, and spends her time dreaming up ways to foil her rivals-- the farmer, from whom she loves to steal chickens, and Kumcho Vulcho, the wolf.

In many of the Slavic languages, Kuma can be roughly translated as Godmother. Lisa is a diminutive for the Bulgarian word for Fox, and there are versions of the Kuma Lisa stories in Russian and Czech as well.

KUMA LISA AND THE VINEYARD:

One day, Kuma Lisa sees a vineyard encompassed by a big fence. She's very hungry and looks longingly at the vines dripping with succulent, ripe grapes. There's a narrow gap in the fence, but Lisa's so thin she manages to squeeze through and starts eating grapes.

After several minutes and several pounds of grapes, she wants to get out, but can't, because she's so full now that there's no way she can fit back through the fence. So she sits there in the vineyard and waits to get skinny-- and hungry again.

When she finally gets out, Lisa becomes very sad, and muses, "I was hungry when I got in, and I am hungry when I have to go out."
