Cochlear Implants By Jeff Anderson
Do cochlear implants really work? After talking with some Deaf and researching material from both the hearing and Deaf medical communities, they are not worth the expense and "damage" they cause to a person. I know of many parents of deaf children choose to have this done because they do not want to accept their child's deafness and feel like he/she is not "normal." However, I do feel that a parent has every right to decide the best course of action they feel is necessary for the welfare of their child; but cochlear implants sounds like it came from the script of a Star Trek episode! It is a horrible decision and one that they need to be made aware of. I read one testimony from a father of a deaf two-year-old girl who claims the implants are doing wonders for his daughter. He said that she can now talk about 10 words. My daughter Katie is the same age and she can hold a whole conversation and has a vocabulary of 200 words! Is that deaf girl normal? No! If she were in an ASL class, she would have the same language development as Katie! He is a sad, sad individual if he thinks his girl is not normal just because she is deaf. |

What really needs to happen for this man and parents like him is for them to get off their lazy bottoms and quit reading all the science fiction novels and start learning sign language! |
