Camp Boggy
In Baie d'Espoir, in a place that's foggy,
There's a large camp site, known as Camp Boggy
To get there, you must wait to fly,
For many days there's an overcast sky.
Most of the men there seem to agree,
And very often go on a spree.
Saturday night is the usual time,
To drink the beer, alky and lime.
The mess hall is clean and staffed very well,
But sometimes the food, you cannot tell.
Just how it was cooked, though the servings are big,
And most of the time it's part of a pig.
There's little to do but sit and chat,
I must admit, we do plenty of that.
After supper, we play some crib,
In between the times, telling a fib.
Sunday and Monday is all the same,
No regular church, that's a shame!
Although there's Mass down in the Rec. Hall,
That's not enough to cover us all.
If you want to get out, don't set a date.
With EPA flying, you just have to wait.
The weather sometimes is the excuse,
So don't complain, what's the use!
Many tales, no doubt will be told,
When the job is done, and we grow old.
One thing is sure of the ground that's soggy,
We'll be in the tales, of old Camp Boggy.

LOST
A week before Christmas in 1949, Matt
Kelly, Josh Roberts, Sam Kelly and Bob King
decided to take a hunting trip to Gull Lake. They
began their expedition early Sunday morning from
Milltown and arrived at their camp site, Burnt Pond
that night. This was a great distance to travel by foot
and dog sled.
The next morning Matt, Sam and Bob left
the camp to hunt for moose and caribou. Josh stayed
back to finish setting up the camp. The hunting party
took some food for the day and one of the dog sleds
they arrived with. The rest of the supplies were back
at the camp site. They did not want to take too many
supplies with them because they were only going for
a couple of hours. Too many supplies would only
slow them down. Their couple of hours hunting
turned into a journey they will never forget.
Snow started to fall around 3:00 pm. They
did not bother to turn back because at the time they
were trailing some animals. The snow fall started to
take a turn for the worst. A blizzard had set upon
them. Walking became hard to accomplish but they
continued to move on. To turn back would be a very
difficult task because of the snow and wind in their
faces. After walking until it became dark the three
men built a shelter out of boughs. The fire inside
kept them warm for awhile. Unfortunately this was
their last fire. During the night, Sam had gone down
to the brook to get some water. While trying to get
water from the brook, he lost his mitten. He used all
of his matches to search for his mitten, unknowingly,
it was the last of their matches. In order to avoid
frost bite Sam and Matt kept exchanging their
mittens. When the moon became bright enough they
decided to head back to camp. They were hoping to
be there by morning. However, when morning came
they discovered that a wrong turn was taken. They
were lost!
With no food and only the clothes they were
wearing, panic set in. The only thing to do was to try
to find their way back. After walking for the whole
day they were able to find the waterway running
towards Conne Pond. They were lucky enough to
find a half eaten rabbit on the river. They figured an
owl had left it behind. Thankful for this bit of
nourishment, they gorged on the uncooked rabbit.
This gave them energy to move on. They continued
to walk but Sam was finding it hard because he was
exhausted. By nightfall they reached Conne Pond.
Hope glistened in their eyes. They knew for sure they
were heading in the right direction. There was no
time to stop, they had to move on. By now it was
three days since they were lost. They hoped that Josh
had gone for help.
Josh stayed at the camp until Wednesday
morning thinking that the men might return.
The men being gone so long, he decided to leave
camp and search for them as he travelled
back to Milltown. Along his way he left supplies at
different sites for them just in case they stumbled
upon it.
Not finding any supplies, their hungry, tired
and cold bodies were failing and Sam was getting
worse by the minute. They had been through an
ordeal in the past three days, falling in icy water,
being in freezing temperatures and not having any
food to eat. They wouldn't be able to take much
more. If they did not find refuge soon their lives
would be in great danger. However, remarkably they
overcame these obstacles and found their way to
Camp 3. Their weary and freezing bodies were
revived with food and dry clothing. This enabled
them to make their journey home.
On Thursday morning, Josh arrived home to
give the news of them being lost. By that evening,
all worries had subsided. The three lost men made it!
They were all glad to be home. Sam was diagnosed
with pneumonia and Matt had his ears frost bitten.
But the worst was over, no one lost their lives. A
week after Christmas they returned to Burnt Pond to
collect their supplies. Being lost did not discourage
them from returning to the wilderness.
Survival Tips for the Wilderness
1. If you have frost bite, it can be cured
by rubbing snow on the affected area.
This helps to rub out the frost bite.
2. If you are snowblind, place used tea
bags on your eyes. If you do not have
access to this, take birch bark from a
tree and put it around your eyes with
two small holes made so you can see.
3. If you cut yourself while in the woods,
you can stop the bleeding by applying
turpentine to the cut.
4. If you have indigestion, boil cherry bark
and drink the broth.
5. If you loose your way in the country,
find a juniper, its top always points to the
east.
