Tom was six years old when the tidal wave hit in 1927. He recalled the tidal wave not affecting his family because the water only reached the bottom part of their fence.

On that particular day a lot of water came up around their house. She remembers their were two weddings that day which were the weddings of Jim Hoskins and Victor Collier.

He remembers the day of the tidal wave, the house shook and the cow was up on a hill and it came down mooing. His mother said " Oh my the world has come to an and ". They lost a lot up on the coast and on the west shore they lost a house with a baby in it.

When the tidal wave of 1929 hit, he was down by a mill and he could feel ice breaking under his feet. There was no damage around here only high tide.

During the tidal wave, the tide got higher than usually but didn't do any major damage around Bay D' Espoir. She recalls her baby being in a cradle when the tidal wave hit. It shook like someone was rocking it.

I remember the tidal wave. Me and Leo was at the house. Their was two weddings that day, Jim Hoskins was one of them who got married. The house began to shake and tremble. We said " Fire " and grabbed two buckets of water and went for the roof and when they got up there, there was no fire. That night we were over to the place where the apartments are now because that was where Father St. Croix was. The beach where Bayside is, the water was coming all the way up to Fonse Organ's. The water would take the wood and everything. Fonse wanted us to come over because he was afraid, but we wouldn't. So I and George left to walk out to Sam Organ's that's where the teachers would stay and carried on. After that I went home and went to bed. I didn't know nothing before Sam, Liz and everyone came up and said, " she going to sink ", they were frighten to death, crying and praying. It was a nice day but that night it was really bad.

It was in November, Cecil and his old man was in the garden digging up potatoes when he heard the rumbling. Cecil said " What's that rumbling. " His old man did not know, there was no cars back then and said, " Look at the tide coming in through the cove. " Tide rushed in and after 10 minutes it was as it could go . Three times it went in and out. Old George Wells had a schooner up there along side of the wharf. The tide got so high the schooner floated up on the wharf. When the tide dropped she was up on the wharf. There was a lot of destruction outside of the community.

When the tidal wave occurred, a man noticed the water was higher than usually. He recalled he and another fellow sawing wood and thinking the cliff behind them was going to fall on them because of the loud noise they heard. They could feel the earth shaking underneath their feet. Harold cut his hand from being scared. He remembered some houses being washed out to sea, but no damage was done around here.

Bessie Kean on the Tidal Wave

Bessie was nine years old when the tidal wave occurred. She remembered walking home and seeing a fence shaking and ice in the ditches cracking. The huge waves forced nets to go on shore. She also remembered, water running into some people's homes but no damage was done.
