St. Veronica's

St. Veronica's was once known as The Bottom. The first settler in the community was probably William Barnes from Gaultois, NF in 1967. He, unlike most people moving to St. Veronica's, was a fisherman. Others who moved here were mainly loggers.

In the 1890's the Organ's and Kearley families dominated the area. They were loggers who helped support the growing forest industry in the community. Logging was the primary source of employment for a long time, until the hydroelectric project started in the mid 1960's.

This is when the population became its largest. In 1966, the population was 166. However, once the project was completed, the population quickly decreased. In 1991, there were 83 people living in St. Veronica's.

In the 1950's, Father Michael Hayes renamed the north western part of Head of Bay d'Espoir to St. Veronica's.
