St. Joseph's Cove

Like most of the communities in Bay d'Espoir, St. Joseph's Cove's first settlers were those who came for the winter logging season. Fishermen frequented the area in search of cock and hens (clams) to be used as bait. This is how St. Joseph's Cove got its first name as Cock 'n' Hen Cove.

The first family to move to St. Joseph's Cove was the Organs. By 1899, there were about three families, all working in the logging industry.

The population grew steadily during the next few decades. When the hydroelectric facility construction began, more and more people moved to St. Joseph's Cove. The population decreased to 128 by 1991, when construction was long over.
