Hebrews 1:8
So far in our look at the doctrine of the trinity, we have seen that
the
Bible tells us there is one God, and that the Father can be called
God.
Today our verse tells us that the Son is also God.
If we believe II Timothy 3:16, that every word of Scripture is inspired
by
God, then in effect God himself is revealing to us this truth found
in
Hebrews. The writer of Hebrews tells us that this statement found
in Psalm
45 actually refers to "the Son," Jesus Christ. If then, this
is the case,
and we see the text is talking to God, then Jesus Christ must be God
as well.
While this verse makes the clear facts of the matter easy to discern,
the
impact of this fact go far beyond a simple academic understanding that
"Jesus is God." If Jesus is God, that means that He always existed,
that
He is rich beyond compare, and that He is more powerful than any other
force in heaven or earth. As we see then that Jesus humbled himself
to
take on the limitations of a human body, to be born in the squallor
of a
Jerusalem stable, and to live a life of outward poverty on this earth,
we
should be awed with God's love for us. Of course no human can
properly
understand the tremendous sacrifice that Christ made for us when He
stooped
to become a man and die for our sins. Certainly by any human
measure it
was a tremendous work, but when we see that Jesus is God, His act of
redemption for us takes on an unfathomable dimension -- something too
wonderful to even speak about.
If Jesus's sacrificial life and death (and His resurrection) are not
enough
to bring us to our knees with thanksgiving, the fact that He is God
also
means tremendous things for our lives as Christians. Not only
did the
second person of God Himself become a man and die in our place, but
since
Jesus is God, that means He is alive and well today. Jesus's
diety also
means that He embodies all the attributes of God we mentioned earlier
-- He
is faithful, loving, righteous, unchangeable, all-knowing, and everywhere
at once. That means He is always with us. We are not following
some dead
man as many religions claim to do, but we are following the Living
God, who
is there to guide us and conform us to His image each day of our lives.
So, as we go about our day today, let's remember that we do not simply
belong to religion so-and-so. Rather, we are children of the
living God,
spending each day in a wonderful relationship with our Maker and Lord.
That is only possible because of the tremendous work of Jesus Christ,
and
the fact that the Son is indeed God.
Have a great week.
in Christ,
Brad
